Correlation between the climacteric symptoms and serum levels of estradiol. progesterone, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone (LH) was studied in 191 premenopausal and postmenopausal women. Significant correlation was obtained between the climacteric symptoms represented by the menopausal index of Kupperman and associates and serum levels of estradiol as well as LH in a subgroup of the premenopausal women, ages 35 to 39 years. The symptoms were shown to be significantly related in serum levels of LH and inversely related to estradiol. These results confirmed that climacteric symptoms, at least in premenopausal women 35 to 39 years of age, could result from a low output of ovarian estrogen and a high production of pituitary gonadotropin.

Two infants of homocystinuria with a defective activity of the N5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase in the liver, kidney, brain and/or leukocytes were reported. Contrary to four cases with similar biochemical defects reported up to date, the two cases of ours demonstrated peculiar clinical features characterized by an early onset in infancy, fits of apnea and seizures, downhill course with coma, and death within one year of life. Thus "an infantile type" of this disorder was advanced as a new clinical entity. Assay for the N5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase activity using peripheral leukocytes was established and might be useful for a diagnosis of this disorder and also for detection of heterozygotes.
In order to quantify the changes of feed-back effect of estrogen on the release of pituitary gonadotropin which is regulated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian system, the responses of LH and FSH to the intravenous infusion of 20 mg of conjugated estrogen were studied in 49 post-menopausal and 20 castrated women. In the group of women within 1 year after menopause, serum LH levels were elevated following the infusion of the conjugated estrogen. The responses of serum LH and FSH levels were different between post-menopausal and castrated women. The data indicated that the difference between the two groups was probably due to the difference of secrection patterns of the gonadotropins in post-menopausal and castrated women.

Changes in serum LH and FSH were measured following injection of synthetic tetrapeptide (Glu-Tyr-Arg-Trp-NH2) or synthetic LH-RH into the femoral vein of oophorectomized rats. A considerable secretion of LH occurred after injection of synthetic tetrapeptide although its LH-releasing activity was less prominent than that observed after injection of LH-RH. No appreciable FSH-releasing activity was noted following injection of the tetrapeptide. A significant rise of LH and an observable, but extremely modest, rise of FSH with an indistinct peak were noted after single injection of synthetic LH-RH.
During dietary treatment of a case of maple syrup urine disease, it was found that abnormal EEGs were observed when serum levels of leucine were abnormally high while those of valine and isoleucine were normal, and also when serum levels of valine and isoleucine were abnormally high while serum leucine levels were normal.
The present study attempted to elucidate stimulatory factor(s) in the rat hypothalamus which controls prolactin secretion from the anterior pituitary. Rat serum prolactin was elevated so much in late pregnancy that we prepared the hypothalamic extract of late pregnant rats. Prolactin levels in serum and pituitary by radioimmunoassay. After injection of this extract into a lactating rat 48-60 hr after delivery, the serum prolactin level was elevated significantly one to four hr later and the pituitary prolactin level declined two hr later. On the other hand, the hypothalamic extract of normal female rats prepared in a similar manner inhibited prolactin secretion from the anterior pituitary in the lactating rat as described by other authors. These data indicate that the prolactin releasing factor may consist in the hypothalamus of late pregnant rat, and be predominant over the prolactin inhibiting factor during late pregnancy. Prolactin secretion was also investigated in lactating and non-lactating puerperium rats. Prolactin in serum and pituitary declined with days after delivery in non-lactating rats, but not in lactating rats. The presumed factor for such prolactin release in lactating rats is considered to be the prolactin releasing factor.

It has long been demonstrated that in cardiac muscle alterations in the extracellular pH exhibit a remarkable inotropic effect, whereas the precise mechanism is not fully clarified yet in spite of many associated thories. In recent years, however, abundant informations about the processes of excitation-contraction coupling (E-C coupling) of cardiac muscle have been obtained. Accordingly, the mechanisms of inotropic actions of pH on cardiac muscles must also be re-examined on the basis of these lately developed theories of E-C coupling. In the present experiment, therefore, we attempted to elucidate the fundamental mechanism of actions of pH upon several processes of E-C coupling using the bullfrog atrium whose processes of E-C coupling have been fairly well known...
