Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used for detection of immunoglobulin (Ig) M and IgG antibodies against a serologically common antigen (original endotoxin protein), protease, and elastase of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The P aeruginosa antibody in horse sera was measured, using ELISA. Horseradish peroxidase-labeled rabbit anti-horse IgM and IgG antibodies were used for enzyme-labeled antibody conjugate. 5-Aminosalicylic acid and H2O2 were used for substrate. Sera collected from a vaccinated horse, a newborn foal, and 72 healthy racehorses were investigated for antibodies against P aeruginosa by ELISA and passive hemagglutination procedure. Changes in IgM and IgG antibody titers with vaccination were clear by ELISA. In the newborn foal, significant amounts of IgM and IgG antibodies from colostrum were present on the 1st day after birth. It was shown by ELISA that the level of antibodies in the newborn decreased initially and then increased. Some antibodies against original endotoxin protein, protease, and elastase of P aeruginosa were detected in almost all the healthy racehorses investigated.

The present study was conducted to overcome some of disadvantages of cerebral blood flow study by radionuclide, such as poor regionality of flow values and errors involved in pathological brains. Serial CT scanning was carried out during and after inhalation of 50 to 70% non-radioactive xenon in humans. Diffusible gas with high atomic number enhanced gray matter first 19 +/- 4 HU (mean +/- SD) on an average in Hounsfield unit (HU) and later white matter 24 +/- 4 HU. In seven normal subjects, blood flow in gray matter was 82 +/- 11 and that in white matter 24 +/- 5 ml/100 gm/min. Partition coefficient which is not readily obtainable by radionuclide study was 0.9 +/- 0.1 in normal gray matter and 1.4 +/- 0.2 in normal white matter. Two cases were presented to show k-map (clearance rate), lambda-map (partition coefficient) and CBF map, which displayed images of values calculated automatically, in black and white or color on CRT. The first case was a patient with metastatic brain tumor from lung in the left parietal region. The blood flow of the tumor was close to that of gray matter, whereas blood flow of edematous white matter surrounding the tumor was decreased to below 10 ml/100 g/min with partition coefficient ranged from 0 to 0.9. The second case was presented to demonstrate the resolution of the blood flow map obtained by this method. Multiple lacunar infarcts of the basal ganglia and white matter in the size of 1 to 3 mm, which were hardly identified on regular CT picture, were well visualized on CBF map. This method appeared to have several advantages over conventional isotope method and to provide useful clinical and research informations.

Meningeal involvement in multiple myeloma is a rare occurrence. We report a case of IgG myeloma with neoplastic cell infiltration into the cerebrospinal fluid as determined by a protein A plaque-forming cell assay. Electrophoresis of the cerebrospinal fluid revealed a monoclonal band in the same position as the monoclonal band in the serum. Meningeal involvement may probably be more common at the terminal stage in multiple myeloma than has been previously considered.

The equation derived by Coburn, Forster, and Kane (1965) for the absorption and elimination processes of carbon monoxide was solved analytically with less-restrictive assumptions. The solution can predict the COHb levels during and after exposures of 50 to 500 ppm CO not only in human subjects but also in rats and mice with reasonable accuracy, except for the CO elimination by breathing hyperbaric oxygen. Physiological parameters required for the prediction are only body mass and hemoglobin concentration. It has been shown that the rate of both processes is inversely proportional to B0.24 in mammals, where B is the body mass: the smaller the animal, the faster the rate of both absorption and elimination.
Ontogenesis of hPL binding factor and its regulatory mechanism were investigated in rat liver cell membranes. The results were as follows: 1) Binding of hPL was very low in liver cell membranes from fetal and immature rats. It began to increase after 28 days of age. It increased over control level at mid-pregnancy (L12), reaching more than 300--400% of control level in late pregnancy. It decreased immediately to control level within 24hrs. after parturition. 2) Among the rats treated with estradiol-17 beta, those with progesterone, or those with hydrocortisone, the binding showed a dose-dependent increase in the rats treated with estradiol but no significant change in the others. Combined administration of estradiol and dexamethasone suppressed the binding increased by estradiol completely. 3) The binding was not be able to detected 7 days after hypophysectomy in rats. hPL treatment with PVP (polyvinylpyrrolidone) could restore them. On the other hand, estradiol-17 beta treatment failed to restore. 4) Estradiol-17 beta, progesterone, corticosterone, rPRL, and rCM (rat chorionic mammotropin) were measured in rats in pregnancy. The level of rCM elevated with two peaks at mid-pregnancy and at near term. The other hormones were not changed. In conclusion, hPL binding factor (hPL receptor) in rat liver cell membrane have an intimate relation with maturity and pregnancy. The receptor or its function may be induced by hPL itself and estrogen, but suppressed by glucocorticoid.
