Clinical evaluation of newly developed CRT viewing station: CT reading and observer's performance.

The clinical performance of the new viewing station with six CRT monitors (17-inch, 1,024 x 1,280) was evaluated. In the primary interpretation of CT images, time measurements were carried out for eight radiologists. No significant differences in reading time existed between CRT and film in 3 of 4 readers in head CT series, and in 2 of 6 readers in body CT series. Compared with the previous system, the new prototype system achieved an approximately 30% decrease in reading time in both head and body CT studies and could reduce mental and eye fatigue.

Focal enhancement of expression of c-Met/hepatocyte growth factor receptor in the myocardium in human myocardial infarction.

To determine the distribution and expression level of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) specific receptor, c-Met, in human myocardial infarction. Autopsies of 13 patients who died without heart diseases (control) and 13 patients with a history of myocardial infarction (2 h to 10 years before death). The harvested myocardial tissues were stained with hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) and immunohistochemically stained for c-Met expression by the avidin-biotin-horseradish peroxidase complex method using an antibody to c-Met. C-Met expression was only slightly increased in control subjects and in noninfarcted myocardium of the test group. In contrast, high expression was noted in the peripheral region of the myocardial infarction and in some hypertrophic myocardial cells. C-Met was not expressed in the infarcted myocardium, but overexpression was noted in the surrounding myocardial cells of blood vessels and in the subendocardium and subepicardium in a band-like pattern. The expression level of c-Met was most enhanced at the time of appearance of coagulative necrosis and least in the myocardium of subjects with old infarcts. Our results indicate that HGF preferentially reaches the ischemic regions of the myocardium and has local and direct effects on the myocardium in patients with myocardial infarction.

Identification of a recombinational signal sequence-specific DNA-binding protein(s) of Mr 115,000 in the nuclear extracts from immature lymphoid cell lines.

Rearrangements of immunoglobulin genes are mediated by highly conserved heptamer and nonamer recombinational signal sequence. Using a protein-blotting procedure, a heptamer and nonamer recombinational signal sequence-specific DNA-binding protein(s) was examined in the nuclear extracts from lymphoid and nonlymphoid cell lines. Nuclear extracts were subjected to SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and transferred by electroblotting to nitrocellulose filters. Then the filters were hybridized to 32P-labelled synthetic double-stranded heptamer-23bp-nonamer or nonamer-12bp-heptamer recombinational signal sequence probes. A relatively large amount of a DNA-binding protein(s) of Mr 115,000 for both probes was detected in the nuclear extracts from immature B and immature T cell lines. No DNA-binding proteins were detected in a myeloma cell line. Interestingly, this DNA-binding protein(s) might be able to recognize both heptamer and nonamer. Recombinational signal sequence-specific DNA-binding activity of the protein(s) and the presence of the protein(s) in a stage-specific manner strongly suggest that the protein(s) of Mr 115,000 detected here may play an important role in the recombination of Ig and TCR genes.

A spontaneous testicular teratoma in an ICR mouse.

A spontaneous teratoma was detected in the left testis of a 7-wk-old male ICR (Crj:CD-1) mouse. The tumor was composed of a variety of well-differentiated tissue elements from all 3 germ layers including neuronal tissue and stratified epithelium as ectoderm-derived tissues, bone, cartilage, striated muscle, and adipose tissue as mesodermal tissues, and respiratory columnar epithelium as endoderm-originated tissue. No tumor metastasis was detected. It may be of congenital origin as in strain 129 mice. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report concerning spontaneous testicular teratoma in a strain ICR mouse.

Autoantibodies to collagens in Japanese patients with ankylosing spondylitis.

OBJECTIVE: We measured antibody levels against human type I, II, III and IV collagens in Japanese patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). RESULTS: Significant elevations of antibodies against type II (IgG and IgA classes) and type IV (IgA class) collagens were observed in AS patients, whilst there was no significant elevation of any antibody class against type I or III collagen when compared to controls. CONCLUSION: These findings indicate that AS patients have immune responses to type II and IV collagens, which may be responsible for sustaining the characteristic local inflammations in AS.
