Among 675 patients who had undergone curative resection of gastric cancer during last 13 years, 113 died of cancer recurrence. One hundred and forty-five patients who had survived longer than 5 years were used as controls. In the recurrence group, the primary lesion was larger and the lymph node metastasis more common as compared with the surviving controls. Moreover, these lesions were often located at the upper third of the stomach and exhibited Borrmann 3 or 4 type. Prognostic serosal invasion was positive in 75 per cent of the recurrence group and negative in 84 per cent of the surviving controls. The most frequent mode of recurrence was hematogenous metastasis in negative prognostic serosal invasion (54%) and peritoneal disseminated metastasis in positive prognostic serosal invasion (52%). There were no differences in the distribution of gross and histological types of cancer in the modes of recurrence. It was found that peritoneal dissemination and/or local recurrence dominated as the mode of recurrence (51%), followed by hematogenous metastasis (34%), but that lymph node recurrence was uncommon (15%). In peritoneal disseminated cases, long-term survival following reoperation should not be expected. It was suggested that in order to improve the prognosis in the case of hematogenous metastasis, postoperative immunochemotherapy should be applied.

Primary malignant lymphoma of gastrointestinal tract is relatively rare and the most of it are seen in stomach or small intestine, and in Japan only 130 cases of primary large intestinal malignant lymphoma were reported from the accumulating results of the postoperative cases in the 11th Congress of the Japanese Research Society for Cancer of the Colon and Rectum. This paper describes the case report of the primary malignant lymphoma originated from the cecum, and the review of the literature. The patient was 63 year-old female, who came to this hospital for slight fever and right lower abdominal pain that was gradually increasing. After the investigation by using barium enema and the intrapelvic CT, cecum tumor was detected. The ileocecal excision was performed, and revealed the 4 X 4.5 cm tumorous type lesion of which surface was slightly irregular. Histopathologically the tumor was follicular lymphoma (partial type), medium sized cell type by the Lymphoma-leukemia Study Group (LSG) classification. After discharge, cyclophosphamide was administered by 100 mg/day for six weeks, and the sign of the recurrence has not been observed.

A 65-year-old patient with xeroderma pigmentosum (XP), XP77TO, was assigned to complementation Group D by the cell-fusion study and comprised the fifth Group D case in Japan. The patient had mild solar sensitivity by age 7, dyspigmentation by 10 years, and he still currently has moderate symptoms. The skin phototest by 290, 300 and 305 nm monochromatic ultraviolet (UV) light revealed a delayed peak of erythema 48 h post-irradiation and lowered minimal erythemal doses. The XP77TO skin fibroblasts, as well as a reference Group D strain, exhibited the same 7-fold higher sensitivity to the lethal effect of 254 nm UV as did normal cells. Unscheduled DNA synthesis (UDS) induced in XP77TO cells by 254 nm UV (10 J/m2) was 42% of normal, falling into the Group D range of 25-50% UDS. In spite of such a similar cellular phenotype, XP77TO developed squamous cell carcinomas at 44 and 65 years of age and audiometric sensorineural deafness in a delayed fashion at advanced age.
Ceftriaxone (CTRX) was clinically evaluated and its pharmacokinetics studied in neonates and premature infants, and the results obtained are summarized as follows. 1. Average blood levels of CTRX after intravenous administration of 10 mg/kg in 3 neonates with birth weights of 2,500 g or more were 45.32 mcg/ml at 15 minutes, 28.91 mcg/ml at 1 hour, 15.76 mcg/ml at 6 hours, and 16.28 mcg/ml at 12 hours, and the half-life was 9.93 hours. The half-life in a newly born premature infant (less than 1 day) was 28.90 hours, and in a premature infant 6 days old it was 12.90 hours. 2. Average blood levels after intravenous administration of 20 mg/kg to 2 neonates aged 0 and 3 days with birth weights of 2,500 g or more, were 129.7 mcg/ml at 15 minutes, 60.94 mcg/ml at 1 hour, 32.04 mcg/ml at 6 hours, and 24.23 mcg/ml at 12 hours, and the half-life was 8.95 hours. The half-life in a newly born premature infant (less than 1 day) was 20.70 hours. 3. Urinary recovery rates of CTRX in 12 hours after intravenous administration of 10 or 20 mg/kg to 6 neonates aged 0 to 3 days (including premature infants) ranged from 13.8 to 50.6%. 4. Clinical efficacies of CTRX were excellent or good in 3 of 4 neonates including infants suspected of having infections (efficacy rate: 75%). 5. As a side effect, diarrhea was noted in 1 case.

In the present study we investigated some of the physicochemical properties of macrophage-activating factor(s) (MAF) produced by the tumor-immune Lyt-1+2- T cell subset. Supernatant from mixed culture of spleen and lymph node cells, obtained from C3H/HeN mice immunized with syngeneic MH134 hepatoma or MCH-1-A1 fibrosarcoma, with the corresponding tumor cells exhibited the capability of activating peritoneal exudate macrophages to exert their cytostatic and cytolytic activities on tumor cells. Such MAF production was abolished by treatment of tumor-immune spleen and lymph node cells with anti-Thy-1.2 or anti-Lyt-1.1 antibody plus complement (C) before culturing. Anti-Lyt-2.1 and/or anti-asialo GM1 plus C treatment, however, had only marginal effect on the generation of MAF by these cells, despite the complete disappearance of natural killer (NK) cell activity of spleen and lymph node cells after the treatment with anti-asialo GM1 plus C. Thus, the tumor-specific Lyt-1+2- T cell subset could fulfill a crucial role in generating MAF without the support of NK cells. The MAF activity was heat, acid, and trypsin sensitive. On Sephacryl S-300 column, MAF activity was eluated in a broad single peak around a molecular weight (m.w.) of 70,000 daltons. Antiviral activity was detected in the concentrated pool of MAF-containing fractions from Sephacryl S-300. Gel permeation analysis using HPLC also showed a coincident peak of MAF and antiviral activities at a m.w. of approximately 70,000 daltons. In addition, MAF activity was almost completely neutralized by incubation with rabbit antiserum against recombinant murine gamma-interferon (IFN gamma). Taken together, these results indicate that MAF generated by tumor-immune Lyt-1+2- T cell subset is closely related to IFN gamma.
DNA repair synthesis in 8 explant-outgrowth cultures of epidermal cells isolated from variant and complementation groups A and E of xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) was examined by measuring unscheduled DNA synthesis (UDS) on autoradiographs. The extents of UDS in XP epidermal cells were compared with those in normal epidermal cells obtained from 26 subjects. In both normal and XP epidermal cells, UDS was induced dose-dependently by radiation at doses of 5-20 J/m2. XP epidermal cells showed various extents of defect in DNA repair depending on the type of XP. In XP-A, the extent of UDS in epidermal cells was very low, being seen in only 3-10% of the normal epidermal cells. But epidermal cells isolated from XP-E and XP-variants exhibited relatively high levels of residual DNA repair; i.e., 69-84% of the control in XP-E and 67-85% in XP-variant. The extents of UDS in XP epidermal cells were almost the same as those in fibroblastic cells isolated from the same specimens.
