Hypothalamic control of the pituitary-testicular relation in fetal rats: measurement of collective volume of Leydig cells.

On the 20th day of gestation in pregnant rats, the male fetuses were subjected to surgical hypophysectomy by decapitation or to intracranial paraffin injection which compressed the fetal brain. Autopsy was done on the 22nd day of gestation. The collective volume of Leydig cells in the left fetal testis was estimated by Chalkley's method. Decapitation of a fetus caused a significant retardation in increase of the collective volume of Leydig cells 2 days later. In fetuses given an intracranial paraffin injection, the Leydig cell volume was increased significantly compared with normal fetuses on the 20th day of gestation but was far smaller than that in their intact littermates. This effect of paraffin compression was completely prevented by injections of LRH. The Leydig cell volume remained extremely small in decapitated fetuses given LRH. The observations suggest that in the male rat the hypothalamus begins to govern a pituitary gonadotropic function before birth.

[Clinical study on amoxicillin in otorhinolaryngological field (author's transl)].

Clinical effect of amoxicillin was evaluated in 29 cases of the acute infections of ear, nose and throat: 8 cases of acute purulent otitis media, one case of acute otitis externa, one case of furuncle of the ear, 2 cases of acute sinusitis, 12 cases of acute lacunar tonsillitis, 2 cases of pharyngolaryngitis, one case of acute cervical lymphadenitis, one case of phlegmon of the face and one case of acute gingivitis. The following results were obtained from the clinical and laboratory studies. 1) The therapeutic results were excellent in 18 cases, good in 5 cases, fair in 3 cases and poor in 3 cases. The effect was observed in 79.3% of the patients treated. 2) The causative bacteria were: 3 strains of beta-Streptococcus hemolyticus, 4 strains of Hemophilus, 4 strains of Staphylococcus aureus, one strain of Diplococcus pneumoniae, one strain of Gram-positive Diplococcus and Gram-negative Bacillus. Clinically good results were obtained in patients infected with beta-Streptococcus hemolyticus, Hemophilus and Diplococcus pneumoniae. 3) No side effect was observed with amoxicillin, except slight diarrhea in one case. This side effect disappeared by cessation of the administration. 4) No unfavourable influence was noticed on peripheral blood, liver function nor renal function by administration of amoxicillin. 5) From the results of this series, amoxicillin seems to be useful in the treatment of acute infections of the ear, nose and throat.

Heat sensitivity of murine sarcoma virus.

Murine sarcoma virus (Moloney) was found to be heat labile. Inactivation curve represents a first-order kinetics at temperatures between 30 degrees and 60 degrees. Inactivation constant analysis showed an inflexion at about 45 degrees, and the activation energy was calculated as 67.6 kcal/mol for higher temperature range and 7.95 kcal/mol for lower temperature range. Nature of inactivation is also discussed.

Osteogenic induction by cell-free material from murine osteosarcoma and its cultured cell line.

A bone-inducing factor was detected in murine osteosarcoma and its cultured cells. The factor was partially purified from the osteosarcoma and its biological properties were examined. The ectopic formation of the bone with hematopoietic marrow was observed in situ histologically 4 weeks after inoculation of the cell-free material intramuscularly or subcutaneously. Non-osteogenic tumors do not produce this factor. This factor seems to be a protein which is relatively resistant to heating yet labile to mechanical shaking.
