[History of the Naval School of Anatomy and Surgery of Rochefort (1722-1964)].

The Ecole d'anatomie et de chirurgie navale de Rochefort was created on February 5, 1722 by Jean Cochon-Dupuy. Anatomy, internal medicine and botany were taught together with the art of bandages. The major professor was the first medicine doctor of the port, afterwards came the first surgeon. At the end of the XVIIIth century the number of subjects and teachers increased. Many terms of probation were also organized. This school was closed in 1964.

[The use of wine in the Navy].

Wine and sometimes beer, cider or spirits, on board, represent an attractive pole with several aspects, for these drinks are, all the same considered as food, medicines, rewards or even reproofs when temporarily supressed. If naval hygienist doctors agree with the use of wine, their behaviour still remains ambiguous. Indeed, according to them, spirits are responsible for deep drunkeness as well as physical ans moral decays whereas they are more indulgent regarding wine. The reason might be that, in those times, the wine used as food, was also used as a medicine in therapeutics.

[In the Senate, the clamour in the corridors does not always rhyme with history].

After a visit to the Senate, I was informed that, apparently, the backs of some of the chairs were decorated with a medical caduceus with a most political connotation! After a thorough inquiry with the guardian of this honourable establishment, it proved that this caduceus was the symbol of prudence and truth with the symbol of justice and peace. Yet my guide, a senator by profession was sincere. But this old Latin saying could certainly serve hime as an excuse: Errare humanum est.

[The "médecin de papier", myth or reality?].

"Le médecin de papier" can be defined as a little handbook regularly brought up to date, which gave and still gives the captains of merchant ships, fishing-boats or yachts, elementary rules in order to care for their crew in case there were or are no--sea going-- surgeons or doctors on board. Generally speaking, it could be divided into two parts. The first one was a sort of summary of the symptoms and of the treatments of the most frequent maritime diseases. The second one included a list of the medicinal products on board and their main characteristics as well as the way to use and administrate them. "Le médecin de papier" was created by the royal order of August the fourth 1819, as there were not enough surgeons applying for embarking due to the new academical organisation of the studies. So, this "médecin de papier" was given to the captains of the ships who according to the law, wen allowed not to embark--sea going--surgeons. Those vessels had a crew which could be between eight to nineteen men. The editions were on the increase in every French harbour and all through the years, according to the progress of the pharmaceutic science and of the therapeutics; it also depended on the good will and inspiration of the surgeons and chemists who were members of the committees checking on the medecine chests.

[The sea-chests of the Dutch East India Company according to the price list of 1739 (a comparison with the French list)].

The medical chests on the vessel "The Amsterdam" of the Dutch East India Company, lost at sea on January 9, 1749, were controlled by a price list of 1739. They were made up by the apothecary of the arsenal of the Company in Amsterdam, and comprised 156 medications divided into 17 classes according to a mixed classification system, that is, galenical, botanical, chemical and even, occasionally, pharmacological. At the same period, for a number of crew members of clearly lesser status, the chests of the French East India Company contained 233 medical products divided into 13 galenical classes.
