A recombinant human interleukin-1 beta protects adriamycin-induced toxicity. Adriamycin cardiotoxicity and interleukin-1.

Pretreatment with recombinant human interleukin-1 beta (IL-1) protected normal BALB/c mice from the lethal effect adriamycin (ADM) of related to dose and frequency of administration. Posttreatment with IL-1 failed to protect. Neutrophil and platelet counts after the administration of ADM (16 mg/kg) did not differ between the group with and that without IL-1 pretreatment, whereas lipid peroxide levels in the heart were reduced in the group pretreated with IL-1. It appears that the chemoprotection mechanism of IL-1 lies in the prevention of cardiotoxicity due to ADM-induced free radicals.

MR imaging of pituitary hypertrophy due to juvenile primary hypothyroidism: a case report.

We present a case of pituitary hypertrophy due to juvenile primary hypothyroidism with subsequent return to normal size after therapy. This clinical entity is well known, but there are few reports on its magnetic resonance (MR) findings. We stress the usefulness of Gadolinium-DTPA-enhanced (Gd-DTPA-enhanced) MRI in the differential diagnosis of pituitary hypertrophy and pituitary adenoma.

Stochastic resonance in a pulse neural network with a propagational time delay.

Stochastic resonance in a coupled FitzHugh-Nagumo equation with a propagational time delay is investigated. With an appropriate set of parameter values. i.e. the frequency of the periodic input, the propagational time delay, and the coupling strength, a deterministic firing induced by additive noise is observed, and its dependence on the number of neurons is examined. It is also found that a network composed of two assemblies shows a competitive behavior under control of the noise intensity.

Intraductal mucin-producing tumor of the pancreas: diagnosis by MR cholangiopancreatography.

PURPOSE: Our goal was to evaluate the usefulness of MR cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) for intraductal mucin-producing tumor of the pancreas (MPT). METHOD: Eleven patients with intraductal MPTs (six main duct type; five branch duct type) underwent MRCP. The findings of MRCP were compared with those of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). RESULTS: In all of the cases, MRCP could disclose all dilated pancreatic ducts and cysts, some of which were not demonstrated by ERCP. MRCP did not show a signal void of mucin in any of the cases. In the two cases of the main duct type, ERCP showed filling defects of excrescent nodules, which were not seen by MRCP. In the two cases of the main duct type, nodules were seen more clearly by ERCP than by MRCP. CONCLUSION: MRCP and ERCP are complementary imaging modalities for intraductal MPT.

Huge adenomatous goiter reaching the aortic arch with elevated thyroglobulin.

We report a 14 year-old girl with a huge adenomatous goiter in the left lobe in the thyroid gland reaching the aortic arch with elevated thyroglobulin. The tumor grew rapidly for two years since the initial diagnosis as an euthyroid hemilateral goiter. Ultrasonography revealed multinodular tumors and magnetic resonance imaging made clear the lower expanding site of the tumor. We recommend careful follow up of hemilateral diffuse goiters by ultrasonography for earlier detection of nodular changes as seen in our case.

Unpolymerized layer on autopolymerizing, hard reline materials.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to clarify certain properties of the resulting unpolymerized surface layer on 6 hard, autopolymerizing reline resins. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two of the resins examined were the conventional type with a base monomer composition of mainly methyl methacrylate, and the other four were cross-linked reline materials containing difunctional monomers. For curing, the materials were polymerized in air at 24 and 37 degrees C, and in distilled water at 37 degrees C. The powder-to-liquid ratio was changed by +/- 20 wt% of the manufacturer's specified ratio. The inhibition depth processed under these conditions was measured with an optical microscope. Each sample was then immersed in methylene blue dye bath for 3 weeks before its surface was observed. RESULTS: Especially on cross-linked reline materials, the unpolymerized layer was significantly reduced with higher temperature, lower oxygen presence, and lower powder-to-liquid ratio (P < 0.01). The unpolymerized layer was stained in all materials. There were tiny, stained voids in the polymerized region on the conventional type of reline resins, whereas no staining was found in the polymerized region on the cross-linking reline resins. CONCLUSION: The inhibition depth was strongly affected by the temperature, the presence of air, and viscosity. The unpolymerized layer was easily contaminated in all materials. However, the highly polymerized, cross-linked reline materials might be harder to contaminate than the conventional type of reline resins.

The relation of argyrophilic proteins of nucleolar organizer regions (AgNORs) to the proportions of Ki-67 or DNA polymerase alpha-reacting cells in non-Hodgkin's lymphomas.

In order to examine the relationship between argyrophilic proteins of nucleolar organizer regions (AgNORs) and the proliferation activity of cells, we investigated lymph nodes obtained from 25 untreated non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) patients. Two monoclonal antibodies (MoAb) (Ki-67 antibody and anti-DNA polymerase alpha antibody) were used for evaluating cell proliferation activity. A linear relation between the mean number of agNORs per nucleus and the proportion of NHL cells reacting with Ki-67 MoAb was observed (r = 0.48, P less than 0.05). A similar relation between AgNORs and DNA polymerase alpha MoAb was also observed (r = 0.51, P less than 0.01). From these data, it was confirmed that AgNORs reflect the proliferation activity of NHL cells. We conclude that the AgNOR staining procedure is one of the simplest and most reliable methods for analyzing cell proliferation potential.

MR imaging of pituitary dwarfism.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the MR findings of idiopathic pituitary dwarfism correlated with a clinical history of perinatal abnormalities and abnormal levels of pituitary hormones. MR examinations of 18 patients with pituitary dwarfism were performed; these patients were divided into two groups: those with ectopic posterior lobes (group 1) and those with normal posterior lobes (group 2). Among the seven patients in group 1, MR showed hyperintense signal at the median eminence of the hypothalamus, which was regarded as the ectopic posterior lobe of the pituitary gland. The mean anteroposterior length and height of the pituitary gland in group 1 patients were significantly smaller than those dimensions in the normal control group; the pituitary stalk was not detected in three of seven patients. Six of seven patients were products of breech presentation with perinatal asphyxia. The peak serum growth hormone level was less than 5 ng/ml when assessed by insulin-induced hypoglycemia or the clonidine test. MR findings in the 11 patients with pituitary dwarfism and normal posterior lobes were normal except that the mean size of the pituitary gland was slightly smaller than that of normal controls. The clinical history of these patients was normal except for perinatal asphyxia in one case. Our findings in patients with pituitary dwarfism, with or without an ectopic posterior pituitary lobe suggest that the ectopic lobe, visualized as a bright spot at the median eminence of the hypothalamus, may be common when pituitary dwarfism follows perinatal anoxic/ischemic episodes.
