[Establishment and characterization of a cell line derived from mucinous cystadenocarcinoma of human ovary].

A human tumor cell line MCAS, which was derived from mucinous cystadenocarcinoma of the ovary, was established. The tissue specimen was obtained on December 1, 1983 and the culture was maintained in Ham's F-12 medium supplemented with 20% fetal calf serum. Continuous growth made possible cell transfer every 3-5 days and the seventy-third passage was achieved on August 15, 1984. This cell line has the following characteristics. The doubling time of the MCAS cell line was 27 hours and the saturation density was 5.1 X 10(4)/cm2. The cultured cells appeared monolayer and the cellular arrangement was a pavement-like pattern. Rather large cells with vacuoles in the cytoplasm appeared in the confluent state and PAS staining proved to be positive specifically in these large cells. A chromosomal analysis revealed a peritetraploid tendency. By heterotransplantation of MCAS cells to the nude athymic mouse, the tumor developed and had both cystic and solid components. The cystic content was mucinous. Histopathological diagnosis of the tumor was papillary adenocarcinoma and alcian blue staining was positive. The characteristics of the original mucinous cystadenocarcinoma have been precisely maintained in this cell line.

[Effects of evoking imagery on the control of peripheral skin temperature].

This study aimed to examine the effects of evoking imagery as a strategy to control the skin temperature with the biofeedback method. Subjects were 32 female nursing school students. Pair-matched by their ability to evoke imagery, they were assigned to either the I group that was instructed to evoke warm imagery or the NI group that did not receive such instruction. The experiment was consisted of four sessions: pre-test session, two feedback training sessions, and post-test session. All subjects were instructed to raise their finger skin temperature, and the visual feedback was presented to both groups only during the feedback training sessions. Results obtained were as follows: (a) Both groups were able to raise their skin temperature during the feedback training sessions. (b) In the post-test, however, the number of subjects who were able to raise their skin temperature were greater in the I group than the NI group. These results suggested that the subjects who had acquired a strategy could control their skin temperature more effectively if the feedback was taken off.

Anticellular activities of human fibroblast interferon beta and human recombinant interferon gamma. Cytologic changes in a cervical cancer cell line.

The cellular changes in a human cervical squamous-cell-cancer cell line (SKG-IIIb) were investigated after treatment with human recombinant interferon gamma and human fibroblast interferon beta. Cytoplasmic changes characterized by elongation, vacuolization and blurring of cytoplasmic borders appeared relatively early in both treatment groups. After two days of treatment with interferon gamma, the cells began to aggregate and to form pearl-like structures in the center of these aggregates; frequently seen were isolated cells with an eosinophilic cytoplasm and a pyknotic nucleus, similar to keratinizing cells. After six days of treatment with interferon beta, on the other hand, more than 20% of the cells began to show nuclear changes, including remarkable pleomorphism, multilobulation and multinucleation. The differences in biologic activities between the two interferons are discussed on the basis of these observations.
