Hydrolysis of 5,8-di-O-tetrahydropyranyl-5-deoxo-5-hydroxycoriolin which was prepared from coriolin B, followed by oxidation of the hydroxy groups at C-5, or C-1 and C-5, or C-1, C-5 and C-8 afforded coriolin (2), 1-deoxy-1-ketocoriolin (3) and 1,8-dideoxy-1,8-diketocoriolin (4). All three ketones were found to have antitumor activity, whereas antibacterial activity was observed in 2 and 3 but not in 4.

It appears that more than a hundred cases of trigeminal neurinomas have hitherto been reported, but massive extracranial extension of a benign neurinoma into the sphenoid sinus and soft part tissue of the neck is unusual. A 36-year-old woman was admitted to our clinic with complaints of left blindness, vertigo and left nasal stuffiness. Neuroradiological examinations, including plain craniography, angiography and CT, showed a huge mass which destroyed the left middle fossa and extended into the left sphenoid sinus and soft part tissue of the neck. On December 14, 1978, left fronto-temporal craniotomy was carried out, and intracranial portion of the tumor was removed, leaving its extracranial portion intact. Pathological examination revealed benign neurinoma. The postoperative course was uneventful except temporary left total ophthalmoplegia. It was emphasized that, to obtain cure for trigeminal neurinoma, early diagnosis is extremely important, and, for this purpose, CT, including coronal one, was considered to be one of the most useful examinations.
A commercial preparation of bovine liver beta-glucuronidase contained two distinct enzyme species, both of which catalyze the hydrolysis of 4-methylumbelliferyl alpha-L-iduronide. The species with a molecular weight of about 290,000 was devoid of phenyl alpha-L-iduronidase activity and exhibited 4-methylumbelliferyl beta-D-glucuronidase activity. The species with a molecular weight of about 78,000 was active towards phenyl alpha-L-iduronide but lacked the latter activity. Studies of the kinetics of inhibition and heat inactivation suggested that the hydrolysis of 4-methylumbelliferyl alpha-L-iduronide is due to the beta-glucuronidase in the case of the 290,000-dalton species. The highly purified beta-glucuronidase preparations derived from rat preputial gland and liver lysosomes also exhibited 4-methylumbelliferyl alpha-L-iduronidase activity. These findings support the view that beta-glucuronidase can hydrolyze certain alpha-L-iduronide bonds and raise the possibility that beta-glucuronidase may play a role in the catabolism of iduronic acid-containing glycosaminoglycans.
In order to obtain further evidence for the modulatory role of dopamine in chemoreceptors, effects of haloperidol, a potent dopamine antagonist, on chemoreceptor reflex ventilatory response were studied in the rabbit carotid body. An injection of 30 microgram of haloperidol into the external carotid artery induced evident ventilatory excitation which became more marked and sustained at a higher dose. The response was produced by blockade inhibitory dopamine receptors since it was completely abolished in the catecholamine depleted animals. The NaCN-induced excitation of ventilation was potentiated by prior treatment of the carotid body with haloperidol, whereas the treatment blocked the induction of the postexcitatory depression of ventilation. The results indicate the negative feedback as the most possible mechanism by which dopamine exerts its suppressor effect on chemoreceptor nerve activity.

In order to elucidate the effect of surgical removal of the regional nodes on the immunological defence of the host against the tumor, as well as on the cure rate of C3H/He mice transplanted with MH 134, three separate experiments were carried out, and the following results were obtained: 1) The cure rates of mice treated by removal of the primary tumor with regional lymph nodes were significantly lower than that of mice treated by simple amputation without regional lymphadenectomy. 2) It was demonstrated by a bioassay of the regional node that viable tumor cells presented in the nodes prior to the operation disappeared after removal of the primary tumor, whereas in 60-Co irradiated mice prior to the tumor inoculation, such phenomena were not observed. 3) Observation utilizing in vivo neutralization revealed that regional lymph node cells were capable of interfering with growth of tumor cells. These findings suggest that removal of the regional nodes impairs the restraint to the growth of residual tumor after the removal of the primary tumor, and this is probably due to a derangment of the immunologic response of the host.

The results of preoperative angiograms and pancreatoductograms in 37 patients with cancer of the pancreas were correlated with each other, with the findings at laparotomy, and with survival times. Tumors which could not be detected by arteriography and/or pancreatography were resectable, except for those located in the uncinate process. Among the resectable tumors, those which were identified only by pancreatography were confined mostly to the parenchyma of the pancreas and were nearly 2 cm in size. Those patients were expected to have a long survival after total pancreatectomy. In contrast, those tumors which were diagnosed only by arteriography arose from the subcapsular portion of the gland or the uncinate process and showed macroscopic invasion to the capsule of the pancreas. These tumors, recurred within 1 year, despite total pancreatectomy. The resectable tumors showing both vascular and ductal invasion were more than 3 cm in size and extended far beyond the capsule of the gland, and patients with these tumors died within 1 year after operation. In this group no difference in survival time was seen among those treated by the Whipple procedure, those by total pancreatectomy, or those by resection of the total pancreas and the portal vein.
