The present experiment was designed to demonstrate the presence of a constant rhythm or periodicity in the appearance of Fm theta using the Mirror Drawing Test (MDT), a task with a changing degree of difficulty. Thirty male university students were recorded on the EEGs during performance of the MDT for 5 min. Fm theta appeared most frequently in the block requiring the longest time for passage, or the most difficult block. The present study further revealed that Fm theta tended to appear mainly from four points at about 40, 90, 190 and 270 sec after beginning the MDT. From these results, the appearance of Fm theta was shown to be more distinctly related to the concentration of attention. In the process of concentration and attention distraction, the presence of a rhythm with a periodicity of approximately 45 sec was suggested.

The clinical effects of zopiclone were predicted by using two psychophysiological tests: the averaged photopalpebral reflex and the frontal midline theta activity. Zopiclone at 5 and 10 mg showed a rapid, dose-dependent, moderately lasting prolongation of the latencies of the averaged photopalpebral reflex related to the lowering of the arousal level. Diazepam 5 mg increased markedly the frontal midline theta activity, the appearance of which seems to be related to the relief from anxiety, while zopiclone 10 mg only slightly modified the frontal midline theta activity. The results suggest that zopiclone possesses a potent hypnotic effect, whereas its anxiolytic potential in humans is probably low.
The distinct theta rhythm in the frontal midline area during performance of a mental task has been called Fm theta. In the present study, periodicity in the appearance of Fm theta was investigated. Thirty male university students were requested to perform the Uchida-Kraepelin test (a test of continuous arithmetic addition) for 5 min continuously after a 2 min practice and 5 min rest. EEGs were recorded monopolarly from disc electrodes placed on Fz and Cz during the whole procedure. A 5 min distribution diagram of appearance of Fm theta was defined according to our criteria. Fm theta appeared in 19 out of 30 subjects. The total appearance time of Fm theta in each subject showed no correlation either to the amount of performed task or to the number of errors. In the subjects who showed a relatively small amount of Fm theta, it tended to appear mainly at 6 points in the 5 min distribution diagram: about 20, 60, 100, 200, 240 and 290 sec after the beginning of calculation. In contrast, Fm theta was almost uniformly distributed in those who showed a larger amount of Fm theta. These results suggest that appearance of Fm theta shows individual differences and there might exist some periodicity of an attention mechanism in certain subjects.
Clinical features and laboratory findings of 300 inpatients with vibration disease before and after treatments were reviewed. Having been using chain saws or pneumatic hammers for a long period, the patients were afflicted with Raynaud's phenomenon, numbness, pain or stiffness of fingers, pain of elbows and neck, stiffness of shoulders and lumbago. They had high incidences of complaints due to the disorder of the central nervous system, especially of the higher center of the autonomic nervous system; i.e. headache (52.0%), palmar hyperhidrosis (70.0%), forgetfulness (78.2%), fatiguability (61.3%), tinnitus (41.8%), impotence (55.1%), etc. Laboratory findings of the autonomic nerve activity tests, electroencephalograms and audiograms also suggested the disorder of the central nervous system. Treatments during three months had improved significantly the subjective symptoms and the objective findings (p less than 0.05 to 0.001). Thus, vibration disease should be considered as a systemic disease, including disorders of the central nervous system, especially of the higher center of the autonomic nervous system, and disturbances of the peripheral functions.
Sixty inpatients with vibration disease were examined on the effect of dl-alpha-tocopheryl nicotinate by comparative double-blind study. The observed period was 6 weeks and the dose was 6 capsules a day (600 mg as dl-alpha-tocopheryl nicotinate, Juvela Nicotinate, referred to as EN). The physical exercise therapy was applied to all patients throughout the test period. EN group became better with a significant difference from P (placebo) group in the subjective symptoms, the clinical examinations and the collective improving rate (p less than 0.01, 0.05, 0.01), respectively. The improvement of the subjective symptoms of both groups was higher 6 weeks than 3 weeks after administration. Most items in EN group became better significantly (p less than 0.05) as compared with those in P group. The examinations of the peripheral functions in EN group showed a significant improvement 6 weeks after administration in comparison with those in P group. Blood chemistry, blood cell counts and serum electrolytes changed within normal range. Thus, this preparation would be a curative agent for patients with vibration disease.
We investigated the effects of dopamine antagonists on spontaneous cortical and hippocampal electroencephalographic (EEG) changes, and on hyperlocomotion in ketamine-treated rats. Ketamine (20-60 mg/kg IP) synchronized cortical EEG and desynchronized hippocampal EEG in a dose-dependent manner indicating that the drug induced a dissociation between the cortical and hippocampal EEG. These EEG changes were accompanied by an increase in spontaneous locomotor activity, which involved lack of focused direction, stereotypy, irritability and other abnormalities. Dopamine antagonists, such as haloperidol (0.3-1 mg/kg IP), and nemonapride (0.3-1 mg/kg IP), reversed the dissociation between the cortical and hippocampal EEG in ketamine (60 mg/kg IP)-treated rats. Ketamine-induced hyperlocomotion was also decreased by administration of haloperidol (0.3 and 1 mg/kg IP) or nemonapride (0.1-1 mg/kg IP). Thus, it was found that dopamine antagonists reversed the EEG alterations and behavioural changes in ketamine-treated rats.
