Developmental changes in serum ferritin of piglets.

Serum ferritin concentration of 40 nursing piglets was measured by a two-site immuno-radiometric assay to assess relationships of serum ferritin to Fe-related blood characteristics and nonheme Fe concentration of the liver. Hemoglobin concentration rapidly decreased after nursing to 55% of the birth level at 2 to 4 wk of age when the piglets exhibited severe symptoms of Fe deficiency. However, an im injection of 1 ml of iron-dextran (100 mg Fe) at 3 d of age restored the hemoglobin level to near the concentration of 10 g/100 ml by 2 wk of age. Serum ferritin concentration was low at birth and 1 d of age, but increased by 3 d of age. From 1 wk of age onward, serum ferritin level of the unsupplemented animals decreased linearly and declined to the lowest level at 3 wk of age. With iron-dextran injection, however, systemic concentration of ferritin peaked at 1 wk of age and decreased linearly to 3 wk of age. Serum ferritin of both groups was almost depleted at 3 to 4 wk of age. Although a single injection of 100 mg Fe from iron-dextran is adequate to maximize weight gain and to maintain normal hemoglobin level, serum ferritin concentration was almost exhausted after 2 wk of age. Serum ferritin concentration of both groups increased gradually from 4 wk of age, followed by a quadratic rise to 8 wk of age. The elevation of serum ferritin of the unsupplemented group after 4 wk of age almost paralleled that of hemoglobin concentration.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[Independence of startle elicitation from lead-stimulus inhibition in man].

In the present study, the relationship between startle elicitation and lead-stimulus inhibition was examined. The amplitude of the human startle eyeblink reflex increased linearly with increases in the intensity of reflex-eliciting noise (S2). A lead-stimulus (S1), a pip tone of 70 dB, inhibited the reflex at both conditions with lead times of 100 ms (Experiment 1) and 250 ms (Experiment 2). The amplitude of the reflex was reduced by an equal amount regardless of the intensity of S2 in both experiments. The results show that the lead-stimulus inhibition is independent of the reflex elicitation.

Ferritin in blood serum of dairy cows.

Concentration of ferritin in blood serum of dairy cows was measured by a two-site immunoradiometric assay to assess changes in the iron nutritional status during gestation, parturition, and lactation. Although anemia did not occur in pregnancy of dairy cows, there were slight decreases of red cell counts, hemoglobin, and hematocrit in the early stage of lactation. Ferritin concentration remained relatively constant in late gestation (35 ng/ml), but deviations were considerable. Ferritin rose gradually from 3 days prepartum with a sharp elevation after parturition. At 1 to 2 wk postpartum, it had increased to about twice amounts in late gestation. During the subsequent 8 wk postpartum, it fell gradually and thereafter maintained almost unchanged (40 ng/ml). Both iron in blood serum and total iron-binding capacity declined from 2 wk prepartum to the end of gestation but showed a rise beginning about 2 wk after parturition. Because changes in iron-related proteins just before and after delivery may be results of inflammatory reactions accompanying delivery, ferritin concentration is not a good index for diagnosis of iron deficiency in lactating cows just after parturition.

[Facilitation effect of lead stimulation on the startle, eyeblink reflex: an analysis of changes in heart rate and some somatic responses (author's transl)].

Some skeletal startle reflexes are facilitated or inhibited when a weak neutral stimulus (S1) precedes a startle-eliciting stimulus (S2). These effects are called the "lead-stimulation effects", and the present research is concerned with the facilitation effect of them in the long-ISI condition. The present findings were as follows: the facilitation of the startle eyeblink reflex could not be explained by any changes in HR, spontaneous eyeblinks, and chin EMG activity; and the HR changes were independent of the changes in spontaneous eyeblinks and chin EMG activity. These findings were evaluated from the standpoints of Graham's rebound hypothesis, the Laceys cardiac afferent feedback hypothesis, and the notion of Obrist and his associates against Lacey.

[Sleepiness scale and an experimental approach (author's transl)].

The Kwansei Gakuin Sleepiness Scale (KSS) is a self-rating scale which is developed after the Stanford Sleepiness Scale (SSS) and using Thurstone's method of equal-appearing intervals. The present study investigated whether the KSS correlates with vigilance task performance, fatigue test and oral temperature, and whether circadian variation of the KSS ratings is demonstrated during 40 hours sleep deprivation. Six student subjects employed in this study were given performance test, self-ratings and temperature measurement at every 3 hour for 3 days. On Day-2, sleep deprivation was carried out to all subjects. The results showed that mean KSS ratings highly correlated with correct detection rates on the vigilance task, fatigue test and oral temperature, and that the change of KSS ratings demonstrated not only the effect of sleep deprivation but also the circadian variation in sleepiness.
