Precocious puberty due to a hypothalamic hamartoma.

A case of precocious puberty due to a hypothalamic hamartoma is presented. Concentrations of plasma LH and FSH, testosterone and its derivatives were found to be elevated. Circadian rhythms of LH were also observed. After removal of the mass, plasma LH and FHS concentrations declined to nearly half the preoperative levels.

[Effect of 60Co gamma-irradiation on dilute aqueous solutions of surfactants].

Present work deals with the effects of gamma irradiation from 60Co gamma-ray source upon aqueous solutions of three kinds of surfactants. When dilute aqueous solutions of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS, anionic), cethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (CTAC, cationic), and polyoxyethylene lauryl ether (POE, non-ionic) were irradiated with gamma-rays at a room remperature, the residual concentration, products, surface tension, and forming power were examined by colorimetric method, IR spectrophotometric method, gaschromatography, Ross-Miles method, and Traube's stalagnometer etc.. These surfactants were decomposed by the irradiation and thus the surface tension increased and the forming power, on the contrary, decreased with dose. Radiation chemical yields (G-value) of the degradation were about 1 for the solutions of SDS and CTAC, and about 0.3 for the POE solution. From the experimental results, it was found that following chemical reactions seem to occur followed by the radiolysis of water; a) bond cleavage of ester for SDS, of CN for CTAC, and of oxyethylene for POE, b) hydrogen abstraction from the surfactants, c) production of CO bond in the presence of dissolved oxygen.

DNA repair characteristics and skin cancers of xeroderma pigmentosum patients in Japan.

Fifty xeroderma pigmentosum patients in Japan were examined for clinical characteristics and DNA repair of their cells, Skin cancers developed in 22 patients. Most of the patients without skin cancers were children, except for 5 older patients who had intermediate or nearly normal levels of DNA repair in their cells. All patients younger than 10 years old had no or very low activity of unscheduled DNA synthesis after ultraviolet light irradiation. Three genetic complementation groups, A, D, and E, and variants were found. Many Group A patients and no Group C patients characterized Japanese patients, compared with those in Europe and the United States, where Group C patients were most frequent. The high frequency of patients with low DNA repair capacities in their cells may account for the apparent high frequency of xeroderma pigmentosum patients in Japan. Age distribution of the cancer-bearing patients and their DNA repair characteristics suggest that almost all xeroderma pigmentosum patients will develop skin cancers unless their cells have nearly normal levels of DNA repair.

HLA-A10 in pemphigus among Japanese.

The frequency of the major histocompatibility antigen, HLA-A10, was significantly increased (corrected P less than .025) in 43 unrelated patients with pemphigus vulgaris (41.9%) and in 25 patients with pemphigus foliaceus (48.0%), when compared with 60 unrelated healthy controls (16.7%). No significant correlations with other HLA or differences between pemphigus vulgaris and pemphigus foliaceus were observed. Both forms of pemphigus were considered to link with the HLA-A10.

Separation of 1-acylglycerolphosphate acyltransferase and 1-acylglycerolphosphorylcholine acyltransferase of rat liver microsomes.

1-Acylglycerolphosphate acyltransferase (Ec 2.3.1-) and 1-acylglycerolphosphorylcholine acyltransferase (EC 2.3.1.23) of rat liver microsomes were separated from each other. The separation was achieved by sucrose density gradient centrifugation of the enzyme preparation that was obtained by solubilizing microsomes with a nonionic detergent, Triton X-100, and subjecting the solubilized microsomes to molecular-sieve chromatography. The two acyltransferases are distinguishable from each other also with respect to their stabilities to heat and to Triton X-100. Hence, it is concluded that these acyltransferases are distinct enzymes. These results, together with our previous finding that glycerolphosphate acyltransferase is also a separate enzyme, demonstrate the presence of distinct acyltransferases responsible for the acylation of the different acyl acceptors. Furthermore, the acyl-donor specificities of these acyltransferases provide the enzymatic basis for the nonrandom distribution of fatty acids in naturally occurring glycerolipids.

Adjuvant immunotherapy for malignant brain tumors in infants and children.

Immune deficiency of immunocompetent cells or of humoral factors are essential causes of tumor growth. The authors have investigated the transfer of immunocompetent cells - allogeneic bone marrow cell transfusion and white blood cell intracranial infusion - for the treatment of 11 malignant gliomas in infants and children as an adjuvant to surgery, radiation and/or chemotherapy. Ten cases, from 3 months to 11 years, received bone marrow cell transfusion. Two medulloblastomas and 3 pontine gliomas are dead. Five cases are alive and well 37-65 months following surgery. Among these two posterior fossa neoplasms, a medulloblastoma and a glioblastoma have survived 46 and 65 months, respectively. One cerebral glioblastoma received allogeneic white blood cells infused locally into the tumor bed: it recurred 1 year following surgery, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy. Cytolysis of the tumor cells by sensitized lymphoid cells were demonstrated in this case. The role of immunotherapy should be limited at the present time to adjuvant therapy until its effect on tumor growth is statistically confirmed. The results so far are promising, and improvement of the immunological approach in treating malignant brain tumors is under way.
