At present hyperthermia shows great promise when combined with other modalities. Local thermo-chemotherapy may also be a very attractive research field, but the combination of hyperthermia and anti-cancer drugs is still poorly understood. In this review, the background and the clinical reports on heat and chemotherapy which have been reported during the last year were analyzed. Finally, our clinical experiences with local hyperthermia combined with anti-cancer drugs for gastrointestinal cancer were also reported.

A nation-wide survey of carriers of adult T-cell leukemia virus (ATLV) detected as anti-ATLA (ATLV-associated antigens) in volunteer blood donors was made in Japan. A total of 200 sera from donors between 40 and 64 years of age, collected in each of 64 blood centers located in eight districts, were tested for anti-ATLA by an indirect immunofluorescence test. The highest rate (8%) of seropositive donors was found in Kyushu and lower rates of 0.3 to 1.2% in other districts. However, the positive rate varied considerably in different localities even within districts with a high or low seropositive incidence. Further studies of all the donors (16 to 64 years old) in eight centers in Kyushu demonstrated two facts: (1) that the frequency of seropositive donors increased with age, and (2) that four centers in this district showed distinctly high incidences of seropositive donors, while the other four centers showed low incidences. The seropositive rate among all donors was estimated to be about 3% in Kyushu and 0.08 to 0.3% in all other districts.
Fractional rates (% X day-1) of synthesis and degradation were determined by measuring the output of N tau-methylhistidine (MeHis) in the excreta at 4 and 8 weeks of age in the chicken. At 4 weeks of age, the fractional rate of synthesis of the meat-type stock was twice that of the egg-type stock (White Leghorn), but the fractional rates of synthesis at 8 weeks of age were similar (4.1-5.1% X day-1) among stocks. The fractional rate of degradation (1.3-1.5% X day-1) of the meat-type stock at 8 weeks of age was less than half the rate of the egg-type stock (2.9% X day-1). The fractional rates of synthesis and degradation at 4 weeks of age in the Satsuma native fowl were relatively high compared with those in the other stocks. In particular, the rate of degradation (8.6% X day-1) at 4 weeks of age was approximately twice that of other stocks. These results show that fractional rates of synthesis and degradation of muscle protein in the chicken differ among genetically diverse groups. The effect of changes in rates of synthesis and degradation on the change in fractional growth rate also differed. From regression coefficients (bks . FGR and bKd . FGR) of these rates in skeletal muscle protein on the fractional growth rate, it was recognized that the change in growth rate accompanies the changes in both synthesis and degradation in White Leghorn and commercial broilers but only the change in synthesis in White Plymouth Rock (dw) and Satsuma native fowl.
Four carotid-ophthalmic aneurysms were treated through a contralateral pterional approach. Three of these aneurysms were clipped successfully. Because awareness of the size and shape of the optic chiasm is crucial for the success of this approach, we used metrizamide or blood cisternography with a high resolution computed tomographic scanner. With this technique, the shape of the optic chiasm was delineated before operation to make certain that the prechiasmatic space was large enough for the aneurysm to be approached.
The presence of an acetolysis-resistant polymer (sporopollenin) in the cellular slime moulds is demonstrated. This polymer is located on the stalk sheath of fruiting bodies as a bundle of fine fibrils (4-5 nm diameter). The location and structure of sporopollenin in spores are shown to vary considerably, depending upon the species. In Polysphondylium violaceum spores, sporopollenin is composed of fine spicules (4-5 nm in diameter, 25-50 nm long) that cover both the outermost layer of spore wall and the inner surface of the cell membrane. The sporopollenin of Dictyostelium discoideum spores is located preferentially close to the inner surface of the cell membrane, forming a mass of electron-opaque fine granules (4-5 nm in diameter). D. mucoroides spores, however, appear not to possess a tight network of sporopollenin, since they were less resistant to acetolysis than those of the other species. The biological significance of the results is discussed with special reference to fruiting body formation.

A comparison between forelimb amputations through the radius-ulna and the humerus was made in the adult newt, Cynops pyrrhogaster pyrrhogaster and the young toad, Xenopus laevis. Newts regenerated their forelimbs after the amputations and the new parts resembled the old in structure and function. Toads regenerated their forelimbs incompletely after the amputations. The new parts lacked joints and fingers showing a simply elongate pattern. The effect of re-amputation of exposed bone on the regeneration was evaluated in the adult newt. A left forelimb was amputated through the humerus and the exposed bone which protruded from the cut surface due to the relationships of the soft tissues, was then re-amputated a few minutes later. A right forelimb of the same individual was simply amputated without re-amputation of the exposed bone. Newts regenerated both forelimbs simultaneously. The new parts resembled the old in structure and function.

The case is presented of a 36-year-old woman with a plasma-cell granuloma arising in the fourth ventricle. The mass appeared on computerized tomography as a well circumscribed area of slightly high density that was markedly enhanced with contrast medium. Microscopic examination showed a mixed-cell population with a predominance of plasma cells, and the tumor was characterized immunohistochemically by polyclonal plasma-cell proliferation.
