[Infectious urachal cyst: a case report].

A case of an infectious urachal cyst that presented as a lower abdominal mass in a 44-year-old man is reported. There was no urinary tract infection. Cystoscopy revealed the dome retracted. All other investigations were normal without microscopic hematuria. Laparotomy revealed the mass attached to the small intestine because of infection. The mass was excised after partial resection of small intestine and partial cystectomy.

Inhibition by hemin of dinitropyrene-induced mutagenesis in Chinese hamster V79 cells.

The inhibitory effects of hemin on the mutagenic activities of 1,3-, 1,6- and 1,8-dinitropyrenes (1,3-,1,6- and 1,8-DNPs) were investigated in Chinese hamster V79 cells. Mutant cells were selected on the basis of their resistance to ouabain. Hemin itself did not have any cytotoxic effect on Chinese hamster V79 cells, and did not induce mutations when added at a concentration of 10 micrograms/ml. The mutagenic activities of 1,3-, 1,6- and 1,8-DNPs were inhibited dose-dependently by hemin and were reduced 91.7%, 95.7% and 94.7%, respectively, by the highest concentration of hemin tested (10 micrograms/ml).

Inhibition of benzo[a]pyrene-induced mutagenesis in Chinese hamster V79 cells by hemin and related compounds.

The inhibitory effects of hemin and related compounds on the mutagenicity of benzo[a]pyrene (BP) were investigated in Chinese hamster V79 cells co-cultivated with X-irradiated hamster embryo cells. Mutant V79 cells were selected by their resistance to ouabain. The mutation frequency induced by BP was substantially inhibited dose dependently by hemin. The mutagenicity of BP (1 microgram/ml) on V79 cells was reduced to 6.5% by hemin, 52% by biliverdin, 73% by protoporphyrin and 85% by chlorophyllin at the highest concentration of the compounds tested (15 microM).

Quantitative changes of Holmes positive nucleolus-like inclusion bodies in the mouse locus coeruleus under various experimental conditions.

The author demonstrated earlier that the nucleolus-like inclusion bodies in the central nervous system observed under an electron microscope are characteristically stained by the modified Holmes silver impregnation method. These inclusion bodies were then counted in the entire mouse brain; they numbered 1,547 +/- 144 on the unilateral side of the locus coeruleus. In the present experiment, mice were subjected to various experimental conditions or given several medicaments that might induce changes in body weight and in the number of inclusion bodies. Following dehydration, fasting, dehydration with fasting, induction of stress condition, reserpine, alpha-methyl-p-tyrosine, cycloheximide, cephalexin and puromycin administrations, body weight was decreased along with a decrease in the number of inclusion bodies in the locus coeruleus. After streptomycin sulfate injection, however, body weight was increased and inclusion bodies showed a moderate increase in number. Actinomycin D and mitomycin C, inhibitors of nucleic acid synthesis, brought about a definite decrease in body weight, but little if any changes in the number of inclusion bodies. Furthermore, after reserpine injection several small inclusion bodies were observed in the cytoplasm of locus coeruleus cells in a recovery stage and after inclusion bodies regained their normal number and size. The results suggested that the inclusion bodies might have some relation to body weight, as well as to monoamine of the brain and protein synthesis.

[Phase II study with methyl-6[[[2-chloroethyl) nitrosoamino] carbonyl] amino]-6-deoxy-alpha-D-glucopyranoside (MCNU) in hematological malignancies].

A total of 117 cases with hematological malignancies were treated with MCNU at doses of 70-100 mg/m2. Following are the results obtained. 1. MCNU showed a marked depression of cells in the cases with CML, polycythemia vera and thrombocythemia. The low level of cells was maintained for 2 to 7 months. 2. A good response was observed in several cases with blastic crises of CML. 3. No response was observed in two cases with acute leukemia. 4. Although a fair response was observed in several cases with malignant lymphoma or multiple myeloma, moderate bone marrow suppression was observed in a majority of the cases.

Mutagenicity of nitropyrenes in Chinese hamster V79 cells.

The mutagenic effects of 1-nitropyrene, and 1,3- and 1,8-dinitropyrenes on Chinese hamster V79 cells in the presence or absence of X-irradiated Syrian hamster embryo cells were examined. Without Syrian hamster embryo cells, 1,3-dinitropyrene had weak mutagenic activity and 1,8-dinitropyrene had strong, dose-related mutagenic activity. With Syrian hamster embryo cells, the mutagenicities of both 1,3-and 1,8-dinitropyrenes were appreciably increased. 1-Nitropyrene did not induce ouabain-resistant mutants at concentrations of up to 10 micrograms/ml either with or without Syrian hamster embryo cells.

Prospection of chronic vasospasm by CT findings.

Haematoma of the basal cistern was classified into five grades. A little or moderate haematoma (1+ or 2+) disappeared from the basal cistern in 3 or 4 days, however much or severe haematoma (3+ or 4+) remained over a week. Vasospasm occurred in a high number of the cases in which the haematoma was recognized in the basal cistern later than 4 days after SAH not only in operative case but also in conservative case. However vasospasm occurred rarely in cases with early operation within 24 hours after onset except for cases with severe packed haematoma (4+) in the basal cistern.
