The gas chromatographic (GC) determination of the sulphur compounds in town gas (in the Nagoya area) was studied by using a flame-photometric detector (FPD) and the cold-trap method with liquid oxygen. The column packings used were 25% TCEP on Shimalite (AW, DMCS), 25% TCP on Shimalite (AW, DMCS), 10% PPE on Shimalite TPA, Porapak Q and silica gel. The major components identified were carbonyl sulphide, hydrogen sulphide, carbon disulphide, thiophene and tetrahydrothiophene (THT). The identities of thiophene and THT were also confirmed by GC combined with the use of a quadrupole mass spectrometer. The average concentrations and standard deviations of thiophene and THT were 8.8 +/- 1.8and 124 +/- 35 ng per 0.051, respectively. The latter value corresponds to 0.7 ppm, which is relatively high for the concentration of an odorant.

Although several investigators have reported serum alpha-fetoprotein positive gastric cancer with or without metastasis to the liver, its site of production is still unclear. We studied on the site of alpha-fetoprotein synthesis in our cases which showed remarkably high level of serum alpha-fetoprotein, and clarified the presence of alpha-fetoprotein producing gastric cancer by means of direct immunofluorescent technique. However, we also knew the hepatocytes adjacent ot the metastatic lesions could also synthesize alpha-fetoprotein, although these hepatocytes were not known whether under regeneration or degeneration. Through this study, the other carcinofetal proteins such as carcino-placental alkaline phosphatase and CEA were examined using the sera or tumor tissues. Our results will support the idea that cancer is the disease of cell differentiation.

AAThis investigation was carried out to analyze the physical factors of saliva affecting denture retention. A model of examining denture retention is given by two parallel disks separated by a liquid layer. Metal, polyisobutylene (PIB) and poly (methyl methacrylate)(PMMA) were used instead of a denture and mucous membrane; and glycerol, olive oil and castor oil instead of saliva. The experiments were performed with three disk conditions: (1) Both upper and lower disks of metal, (2) both upper and lower disks of PMMA, (3) upper disk with PIB lining and lower of PMMA soley. A strain gauge was used in the experimental apparatus in order to obtain a measurement of high accuracy. In the experiments, the retentive forces developed in layers of 50 mu tickness were measured and compared with the values calculated from theoretical equations. The results are summarized as follows: (1)Retentive force must be resolved into static adhesive and separating forces, (2) surface tension of liquid may not highly influence the retention, and (3) viscosity of liquid plays an important role when two disks are separated.

The smallest commercially available prosthetic valve has an external diameter of 17 mm. Therefore, prosthetic valve replacement has been unfeasible in cases in which the diameter of the aortic valve ring is smaller than this size. A new operative method was used on 2 patients with congenital aortic valve lesions associated with hypoplasia of the valve ring. The procedure consists of a longitudinal incision in the aortic septum placed in the midportion of the two coronary ostia, a vertical incision in the outflow tract of the right ventricle to join the septal incision, prosthetic aortic valve replacement, and patch reconstruction of the outflow tracts of both ventricles by means of two layers of a fusiform Dacron patch. A 23-year-old woman with congenital aortic stenosis associated with hypoplattic aortic valve ring underwent prosthetic placement of the aortic valve and is well 1 year after the operation. Our other patient, a 3-month-old infant with congenital aortic regurgitation, died on the first postoperative day because of postperfusion lung. However, her hemodynamic status had been good in the immediate postoperative period.
