Neuromuscular blocking properties of tobramycin (Tobracin 60mg), dibekacin (Panmycin 100 mg) and ribostamycin (Vistamycin 1g) were studied in man during anesthesia and surgery by observing the effects of these antibiotics on muscle twitch tension. These antibiotics alone did not show any neuromuscular blocking action in the therapeutic doses. The neuromuscular blocking action of d-tubocurarine chloride was potentiated by the intravenous administration of 1g of ribostamycin. Tobramycin 60mg did not show remarkable effect, but dibekacin 100mg produced a slight potentiating effect on the action of d-tubocurarine. The enhancement of the action of d-tubocurarine was anatagonized by edrophonium and calcium. The action of succinylcholine chloride was not affected by tobramycin or ribostamycin, but it was potentiated transitorily by dibekacin. It is advisable to pay attention to possible respiratory depression when ribostamycin and dibekacin and used in combination with non-depolarizing muscle relaxants and/or anesthetics.

On 58 cases of D1 trisomy, which were classified as those with seven separate D chromosomes, including the one in this report, congenital brain and facial anomalies were reviewed and discussed. Congenital brain defects in this syndrome might be classified into three groups: (I) grossly normal brain, (II) absence of olfactory bulbi and tracts, but normally-separated cerebral hemisphere, and (III) completely or incompletely uncleaved hemispheres with absence of olfactory bulbi and tracts. 25.9% of the cases were found in group I, 56.9% in group II, and 17.2% in group III, respectively. Although facial anomalies predicted the brain defects in group III, malformations of the face were not concerned with the brain defects in group I and II. There were no cases with both, normal brain and face.
The results of experiments on small populations of Dictyostelium discoideum, directed towards the measurement of the development in time of the competence of the cells to signal autonomously, are reported. This competence is quantified by X3, the intrinsic probability that a given cell may turn autonomous. The data show an early exponential growth in time of X3, followed by saturation. The saturation value depends on the population size suggesting that the differentiation is a co-operative phenomenon. The differentiation of autonomous cells starts roughly 7 h after the removal of food and saturates within 21 h.
The nutrient medium in which Aerobacter aerogenes was grown, contains a spore germination promoter (SGP) for the cellular slime mould Dictyostelium discoideum. SGP can cuase synchronous spore germination in a short time, and triggers the germination process in just a few minutes. Germination-promoting capacity of SGP decreases as it comes in contact with increasing number of spores. When spores activated by SGP are stored at 4 degrees C, they gradually return to the dormant state. SGP is comparatively heat-stable, but is unstable at pH above 10 or under 3.
Two hr after birth, newborn rats were given a subcutaneous injection of 0.01 mg estradiol benzoate dissolved in 0.05 ml sesame oil. Other siblings were given sesame oil alone. Autopsy was performed on days 1, 2 and 3 after birth. Gravimetric and histologic examinations of the adrenals from these animals and from normal littermate controls were made together with the determination of plasma corticosterone concentrations. In all the three groups of rats, estrogen-treated, oil-treated and non-treated, the weight of the adrenal glands declined with a concomitant decrease in the plasma corticosterone concentrations. The results indicate that estradiol benzoate, when given after birth, does not prevent the neonatal adrenal from shrinking.
