[Systemic lupus erythematous and seminoma of the ovary].

A new case of ovarian seminoma associated with systemic lupus erythematosus is reported. The neoplasia was discovered during a flare-up of lupus. Excision of the seminoma followed by radiotherapy resulted in a 7 1/2-year long remission of systemic lupus erythematosus. This case agrees in every detail with a previously reported case, which suggests a pathogenetic relation between the two diseases. Although this association is rare, clinicians must be aware of its possibility and cautious when confronted with an ovarian abnormality in a young woman with systemic lupus erythematosus.

Direct fetal blood examination for prenatal diagnosis of homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia.

Prenatal diagnosis of homozygous hypercholesterolemia was achieved at the 24th week of gestation by analysis of lipid values in a fetal blood sample obtained by a needle guided by ultrasound. These abnormal values were compared to values in blood obtained from normal fetuses at the same stage of gestation. After abortion, the diagnosis was confirmed by measuring LDL receptor activity on fibroblast cultures from a skin biopsy. The main advantages of this procedure over measuring LDL receptor activity on cultured amniotic cells are its simplicity and speed.

[Clear cell vaginal adenocarcinoma in young girls. Apropos of a personal case].

A personal case which has been studied has given the authors the opportunity of analysing the characteristics of clear-cell adenocarcinoma of the vagina in a young girl. Adhesions are most often discovered in cases of metrorrhagia or discharge about the time of puberty. Thence as a friable tumour on the anterior wall of the vagina. Usually diethylstilboestrol has been given during intrauterine life. Histologically clear cell carcinomata of the vagina are characterised by a glandular structure in which large cells with large nuclei and clear cytoplasm as well as small cells with "tapestry-maker nail patterns" are found together. Treatment is surgical: total colpohysterectomy with conservation of the ovaries, with lymphadenectomy and with conservation of a vaginal cavity. Prevention consists in screening those who have been exposed to the risk and treating lesions that have been found, but above all in care in using estrogens in pregnant women.

CA-125 ovarian cancer associated antigen in cancer and pregnancy: interpretation of enzyme immunoassay and immunoradiometric assay.

Serum CA-125 concentrations were determined using both immunoradiometric assay (IRMA) and enzyme immunoassay (EIA) in 67 patients with various diseases including cancer and in 100 pregnant women with respect to the stage of pregnancy. Correlation of values obtained by the two methods was good except for the first and second trimester of pregnancy. However, IRMA concentrations were 80-200% higher than those obtained by EIA, the larger differences being observed in the critical range of 35-100 U/mL. Therefore, the alternate use of the two methods should be avoided and the cutoff levels should be redefined for each procedure.
