nompA encodes a PNS-specific, ZP domain protein required to connect mechanosensory dendrites to sensory structures.

Mutations in the no-mechanoreceptor-potential A (nompA) gene, which eliminate transduction in Drosophila mechanosensory organs, disrupt contacts between neuronal sensory endings and cuticular structures. nompA encodes a transmembrane protein with a large, modular extracellular segment that includes a zona pellucida (ZP) domain and several plasminogen N-terminal (PAN) modules. It is specifically expressed in type I sense organs of the peripheral nervous system by the support cells that ensheath the neuronal sensory process. A green fluorescent protein (GFP)-NompA fusion protein is localized to the dendritic cap, an extracellular matrix that covers the ciliary outer segment of the sensory process and that shows organizational defects in nompA mutants. The structure and location of NompA suggest that it forms part of a mechanical linkage required to transmit mechanical stimuli to the transduction apparatus.

Identification of ovarian enhancer-binding factors which bind to ovarian enhancer 1 of the Drosophila genes yp1 and yp2.

It has been reported that three different DNA regions-the fat body enhancer and ovarian enhancers 1 and 2-direct the tissue-specific expression of yp1 and yp2 in Drosophila melanogaster. In the present study, we identified ovarian enhancer 1-specific binding proteins. Electrophoretic mobility shift assay revealed that these proteins are present in the adult ovary, but not in adult testis or fat body. Southwestern blot analysis showed that about 130 kDa and 40 kDa proteins, designated OEF1 and OEF2, respectively, from ovarian nuclear or crude extracts bind specifically to the ovarian enhancer 1. The two proteins were partially purified by streptavidin/agarose-DNA affinity chromatography, and their binding activity was confirmed by electrophoretic mobility shift assay. These ovarian enhancer factors may play an important role in the regulation of transcription of yp1 and yp2 in the ovary.

Reduction malarplasty.

Reduction malarplasty is one of the common aesthetic procedures performed in the Orient, although it is rarely performed in the West. Previously described techniques for malar reduction include shaving the prominent portion and contouring the outer surface of the malar complex utilizing a variety of surgical approaches. We describe a technique for malar reduction involving a coronal approach followed by either an in situ transposition osteoplasty or the removal of the malar complex and contouring of the bone with replacement as a free bone graft. We have performed this procedure on 94 patients with good results.

[A human case of tick bite by Ixodes nipponensis on the scalp].

A human case of tick bite on the scalp was found at a local hospital on June, 1984. The patient, 63-year old female, was attacked by a tick while working in a farm forest which located in the suburbs of Seoul. The clinical complaint was a (worm) mass on the scalp which she thought as a tumor. On admission the patient complained of facial edema and general malaise. After removal of the mass (tick), small bleeding and discoloration were observed around the biting site. The tick was morphologically examined and identified as Ixodes nipponensis. This is the 4th human case of tick bite reported in the literature of Korea.
