[Morphological modifications od the upper femoral metaphysis on man stricken by osteoporotic disease].

A study of cancellous bone in the femoral upper metaphysis was performed using a micro-camera. In osteoporotic disease, a qualitative disorganization of bone and vessels occurs. Bone lamellae break off or fracture. Lacunae fine down some bone plates. Connective tissue replaces part or the totality of the hard structure. Some vessels are functional, some are not. Some walls disappear and flux runs out of their lumen, producing hematomae. Quantitative bone loss results in cavities. Adipocyte cells fill in the gaps. Browish deposits settle on the lamellae. It is suggested that these are either settling stem pigments from the breakdown of hemoglobin or micro-thrombuses.

[Madelung's disease and lesions of the extensor tendons. A case report].

A case of incomplete rupture of the extensor tendon to the little finger is reported in a 64-year-old woman with an idiopathic Madelung's deformity which had been present since adolescence but had given rise to no problems. Surgical treatment by resection of the head of the ulna with fixation of the ulna to the radius gave a satisfactory result. Only two similar case reports of rupture of extensor tendons associated with Madelung's deformity have been published. In spite of its rarity, this complication deserves to be known and possibly prevented by resection of the head of the ulna when it is very prominent. It should be recognized before any loss of extension of the little finger, however slight, develops. Lesions of extensor tendons in contact with an excessive prominence of the head of the ulna are among the best known complications of rheumatoid arthritis. Occasionally, the same type of lesion can be seen in Madelung's deformity.

[Analysis and results of total hip replacement with femoral cortical fixation].

The present report describes an original conception of a total hip prosthesis. The implant is applied upon the lateral cortical of the shaft of the femur. The implant is screwed on by the mean of a plate. There is no adjunction of cement. The design tries to reach as close a possible the natural physiology of a long bone during life. The purpose is to gain a better longevity of the implant and, consequently, its utilisation to young patients for whom a total hip prosthesis is the only solution.

[Treatment of post-traumatic cubitus varus in children. A propos of 32 cases].

The authors have reviewed 32 cases of severe varus deformity following supra-condylar fractures in childhood. The sequellae were mainly cosmetic, the function being preserved. All cases were treated by supra-condylar osteotomy fixed by screwing. The technique is described. The results were satisfactory in 20 cases.

[Desmoid fibroma of the limbs (author's transl)].

The authors have treated nineteen cases of desmoid fibroma of the limbs of which two were intraosseous. The severity of the lesion was greater when sited proximally in the limbs. In many patients, the tumours grew slowly and gave little incapacity. A large number of recurrences were found after surgical excision. The treatment, however, must be based on surgical excision which should be as extensive as possible. Radiotherapy should only be used after the tumour has recurred several times. In view of reports of spontaneous healing, hormone therapy was tried but no conclusions could be drawn from these trials.
