The solid phase synthesis of alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) using the benzhydrylamine resin and a number of recently described side chain protecting groups is given. The carboxamide terminal peptide was obtained directly by treatment of the peptide resin with liquid hydrogen fluoride at 0 degrees in the presence of carbonium ion scavengers. The solid phase synthesis of the C-terminal carboxylate hormone, porcine beta-melanocyte stimulating hormone (beta p-MSH), using a 1% cross-linked Merrifield resin and the same side chain protecting groups as in the alpha-MSH synthesis also is presented. Purification of both peptides was carried out by conventional chromatographic techniques. Both hormones were fully active and beta p-MSH was slightly more potent than previously reported in the literature.

Immunoprecipitates of extracts of simian virus 40-infected permissive monkey kidney cells contained two proteins with molecular weights of 56,000 and 32,000 (52K and 32K) in addition to the known viral early gene products. Immunoprecipitates of cells infected with the 0.54-0.59 deletion mutants that lack the viral 17K gene product did not contain thhe 56K and 32K proteins. The additional proteins appeared in immunoprecipitates of deletion mutant extracts if unlabeled extracts of wild-type-infected cells were added before addition of antiserum. The proteins can also be identified in uninfected cells by co-precipitation with unlabeled viral proteins. Thus, it appears that the 56K and 32K proteins are cellular products that associate with the viral proteins, the 17K in particular, and are indirectly immunoprecipitated by anti-tumor serum.

It has been shown that genetic information encoded by the 3' open reading frames (ORFs), E2, E3, E4 and E5, of bovine papillomavirus type 1 (BPV-1), is sufficient to induce cellular transformation of certain mouse cells. The product of the E2 ORF has further been shown to be responsible for the trans-activation of a transcriptional regulatory element located in the noncoding region (NCR) of the BPV-1 genome. To examine whether or not the E2 trans-activation function is encoded by the same gene that encodes the 3' ORF viral transformation function, we have now analysed the expression of the trans-activation function in series of mouse C127 cells transformed by BPV-1 deletion mutants. In addition, using mutated complementary DNA clones generated by the insertion of a premature translational termination linker into different sites of a BPV-1 cDNA clone containing the 3' ORFs intact, we demonstrate that transformation and transcriptional trans-activation functions can be dissociated and that they map respectively to the E5 and E2 ORFs.
We describe an 8-year-old girl who had bilateral acute anterior uveitis, optic disc swelling, and positive findings on fluorescein angiography. A diagnosis of Kawasaki disease was made. This case highlights the posterior segment features of Kawasaki disease and positive correlation to angiographic findings that have not been previously reported.
