Quantitative analysis of hair cholesterol by gas-liquid chromatography.

1. An analytical procedure has been developed for the gas-liquid chromatographic analyses of cholesterol in hair samples. 2. The mean and standard deviation of hair samples from 40 different dogs have been established to be 632 +/- 291 ppm. No significant difference in cholesterol levels was observed between dogs of different breeds, sex or age.

The collective approach to psychiatric practice in the People's Republic of China.

This paper describes and analyzes the effects of the dramatic changes of social values in China on the approach to treatment of the mentally ill since the 1949 revolution. It is mainly based on observations, interviews, and experiences in mental hospitals during three recent trips to the People's Republic of China. Attention here is focused on the effects of four new social values on psychiatric practice: first, the value of collective responsibility as reflected in the new program to integrate mental hospitals with the community; second, the application of the value of sharing and "serving the people" to methods of psychiatric therapy; third, the value of "minimization of elitism" as practiced in the role relationships among members of different categories in mental hospitals; and fourth, the reaffirmation of faith in human ability to conquer difficulties, as shown in changes of patients' outlook on life and behavior. Finally, the implications of this alternative approach on our established assumptions and methods of psychiatric therapy in the West are discussed, and the future direction of theoretical formulation is suggested.

Serum immunoglobulin levels and tissue antibodies in psoriasis.

Serum samples from psoriatic patients were subjected to quantitation of serum IgA, IgG and IgM levels and screening of tissue autoantibodies including ANA, GPA, MTA and SMA. Serum IgA was found to be significantly elevated and incidences of ANA and GPA were also increased. Their significance and possible mechanism were discussed.

Clinical studies on sporotrichosis in Taiwan.

A total of 59 cases, who visited the Dermatological Clinic of National Taiwan University Hospital in the past 27 years, was proved to be Sporotrichosis. The diagnostic criteria were the suggestive clinical pictures with any one of the following points: (1) positive fungal culture with characteristic colonies of Sporotrichum schenckii, (2) good therapeutic response to potassium iodide, (3) demonstration of fungal elements in the suggested pathological tissues or (4) demonstration of fungal elements in pus or tissue using direct immunofluorescence. All the informations concerning the clinical pictures and epidemiological points of view of these 59 patients were analysed. The chief cutaneous lesions were composed of nodules, ulcers or infiltrated plaques in linear arrangement on the exposed areas especially arms, legs or face. Thirty eight cases were male and 21 female. It affected peoples of the age between 4 to 70 years old, and their occupations were mainly outside workers such as agriculturist, worker, etc. Most of the affected people lived in the suburban areas of Taipei city such as Taoyuan and Taipei county. Serological tests such as precipitation, complement fixation and hemagglutination tests were performed in 12 cases, yet no reliable results were got.

Inhibition of nitric oxide synthase potentiates hypertension and increases mortality in traumatically brain-injured rats.

We examined the effects of N omega-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME), an inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase (NOS), on mortality, morbidity, and cardiovascular parameters following traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the rat. Rats were anesthetized with 2% isoflurane prior to moderate (2.0 atmosphere), central fluid percussion TBI. Temporalis muscle temperature was maintained at 37 +/- 0.5 degrees C. L-NAME (10 mg/kg iv) was administered once at either 5 min before, 5 min after, or 15 min after TBI. Sensorimotor deficits and spatial learning/ memory deficits were assessed after injury. Separate groups of rats were monitored for cardiovascular parameters. Preinjury administration of L-NAME significantly increased mortality from 13 (vehicle) to 70% (associated with pulmonary edema), whereas postinjury, L-NAME had no effect on mortality (14 and 25%). L-NAME administered at 5 or 15 min after injury had no significant effect on motor performance or cognitive performance deficits associated with TBI. L-NAME in uninjured rats increased arterial blood pressure by 25 mmHg within 2 min. L-NAME injected 5 min before TBI greatly prolonged the hypertensive episode associated with TBI (1 min in vehicle vs 60 min in L-NAME). L-NAME injected 5 min after TBI caused a sustained 35 mmHg increase in blood pressure. These findings suggest that acute inhibition of NOS has detrimental consequences on mortality that may be owing to its cardiovascular effects.
