Radiation therapy of early glottic carcinoma. A Japanese experience.

From 1969 and through 1979, 105 patients with T1 N0M0 and T2 N0M0 glottic carcinoma were treated with irradiation alone. The minimum follow-up period was 2 years, and only one patient was lost to follow-up. There were 62 T1a lesions, 14 T1b, 19 T2 with normal mobility, and 10 T2 with impaired mobility; relapses occurred in 10, 4, 1 and 3 patients, respectively. All but one patient who relapsed had local recurrence with or without nodal or distant spread. One patient had only nodal metastasis. Six of the 18 relapses were successfully cured by surgery. None of the patients who had nodal or distant spread survived. The relapse rates had no clear relation to total dose or TDF value. T1 lesions treated through larger fields (greater than or equal to 25 cm2) had a lower relapse rate than lesions treated through smaller fields, but the difference was not statistically significant.

[Compared studies of antimicrobial agents against E. coli, Klebsiella, Citrobacter and Proteus isolated from urinary tract infections].

In vitro activities of antibacterial agents against E. coli, Klebsiella, Citrobacter and Proteus which were isolated from patients urinary tract infections at 8 hospitals in Japan, were investigated by agar dilution method from July to October in 1979. The summarized results are as follows. 1. Among oral antibacterial agents, MPC and PPA have showed potent antibacterial activities against E. coli and Klebsiella. Among parenteral antibiotics, CTM was the most active against E. coli and Klebsiella. However, ABPC-resistant E. coli and Klebsiella have appeared to occupy about 40% and 96% of bacteria isolated from urinary tract infections, respectively. 2. In vitro activities of antibacterial agents against Proteus and Citrobacter showed not so potent. 3. Causative organisms in female patients with simple urinary tract infections were mainly E. coli and Klebsiella. 4. Among oral antibacterial agents, PPA have shown similar antimicrobial activities against E. coli isolated from simple and complicated urinary tract infections. ABPC and MPC have been influenced in some degree by these factors. However, parenteral antibiotics are not influenced by these factors. On the other hand, in vitro activities of antibacterial agents against Klebsiella isolated from simple and complicated urinary tract infections were similar.

Inhibition of human platelet functions by verapamil.

The effects of verapamil, a coronary vasodilator, on platelet functions was studied. Platelet aggregation induced by ADP, epinephrine or collagen was inhibited by verapamil in vitro. Calcium ionophore A23187-induced platelet aggregation was also inhibited by verapamil in a concentration dependent manner. In washed platelets, verapamil caused a dose-dependent inhibition of serotonin release induced either by thrombin or A23187 in the absence of extracellular calcium. Addition of 1 mM CaCl2 with A23187 or thrombin partially overcame this inhibition. Addition of 1 mM CaCl2 in the absence of verapamil had no effect on thrombin- or A23187-induced secretion. When verapamil was administered to the healthy volunteers at the dosage commonly used, inhibition of platelet aggregation was observed 2 hrs after the drug ingestion. It is of great interest that verapamil potentiated the anti-aggregating activity of prostacyclin in vitro. Our results may suggest a potential role for verapamil in the treatment of thrombotic disorders.

[Studies on the placental damage and IUGR caused by intravaginally inoculated herpes simplex virus type-2 (HSV-2) during pregnancy (author's transl)].

It has been recognized that intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) could be caused by viral infection during pregnancy. We have experimentally attempted the intravaginal inoculation of HSV-2 (UW-268) 1.2-2.0 X 10(6) plaque forming unit in the pregnant rat. HSV-2 inoculated at 8th and 11th day of gestation, the virus invaded in the basal layer of placenta after 15th day of gestation, but no evidence of intrauterine infection on fetus was identified. The invading route of the virus was investigated by the use of autoradiography. The effect of the virus for fetal growth retardation and placental damage was studied by the use of 14C-leucine, 14C-alanine and 3H-glucose. The virus ascended in the myometrium and endometrium of pregnant uterus and finally it was observed in the basal layer of placenta, but it disappeared rapidly in the myometrium and endometrium. The incorporation of 14C-leucine into fetal liver protein was decreased at the 20th day of gestation in the inoculated groups. The 14C-alanine transference to fetus across the placenta, gradually decreased at the 18th, 20th day of gestation in the inoculated groups. From these results we suspected the viral invasion ascending from vagina to placenta was occurred, then the IUGR was caused by damage of placenta function.
