Effect of renin-angiotensin system inhibitors on survival in glioma patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of renin-angiotensin system inhibitors (RASIs) on the survival outcomes of glioma patients, determine whether using RASIs correlates with survival benefit, and provide evidence-based guidance for the clinical treatment. METHODS: Studies assessing the effects of using RASIs versus non-use in glioma patients were retrieved from the PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Embase databases from inception to April 17, 2024. The included studies reported hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for overall survival (OS) and/or progression-free survival (PFS), as well as the effect on brain edema and steroid dosing in patients. RESULTS: Seven articles involving 2660 patients were included in this study. Pooled results indicated there was no significant difference in OS (HR = 0.89, 95% CI 0.75-1.06, P = 0.204) or PFS (HR = 0.98, 95% CI 0.82-1.18, P = 0.847) between RASIs-treated patients and non-RASIs-treated patients. Sensitivity analysis identified the ACEIs-focused trial reported by Happold et al. as a major contributor to inter-study heterogeneity. Subgroup analyses revealed that in recurrent glioblastoma, pooled OS was significantly longer in RASIs-treated patients than non-RASIs-treated patients (HR = 0.70, 95% CI 0.54-0.92, P = 0.01). Similarly, compared with bevacizumab monotherapy, bevacizumab combined with RASIs significantly extended OS in glioblastoma patients (HR = 0.73, 95% CI 0.63-0.86, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The results revealed that treatment with RASIs may show a trend toward prolonged overall survival (OS) in patients with glioma. For patients with glioblastoma, RASI therapy could prolong OS in those with recurrent disease. Furthermore, compared with bevacizumab monotherapy, the combination of RASIs and bevacizumab was associated with improved OS in glioblastoma patients.

soFusion: facilitating tissue structure identification via spatial multi-omics data fusion.

The rapid advancement of spatial multi-omics technologies has opened new avenues for dissecting tissue architecture with unprecedented resolution. However, inherent disparities across omics modalities, such as differences in biological hierarchy and resolution, pose significant challenges for integrative analysis. To address this, we present soFusion, a method for representation learning on spatial multi-omics data that enables automated identification of tissue compartmentalization. soFusion employs a graph convolutional network (GCN) to extract latent embeddings from spatial omics profiles. To simultaneously capture both cross-modality relationships and modality-specific features, we introduce a novel strategy for intra- and inter-omics feature learning. Moreover, modality-specific decoders are designed to preserve the unique information embedded in each omics type. We evaluated soFusion on multiple datasets including gene expression, protein expression, and epigenetic features. Across all benchmarks, soFusion consistently outperformed existing methods in delineating anatomical structures and identifying spatial domains with improved continuity and reduced noise. Collectively, soFusion offers an effective solution for spatial multi-omics integration, substantially enhancing the robustness of spatial domain identification.

[Third-generation biomedical materials and regenerative medicine].

OBJECTIVE: To summarize the developmental process of biomedical materials and regenerative medicine. METHODS: After reviewing and analyzing the literature concerned, we put forward the developmental direction of biomedical materials and regenerative medicine in the future. RESULTS: Biomedical materials developed from the first- and second-generations to the third-generation in the 1990s. Regenerative medicine was able to help the injured tissues and organs to be regenerated by the use of the capability of healing themselves. This kind of medicine included the technologies of the stem cells and the cloning, the tissue engineering, the substitute tissues and organs, xenotransplantation and so on. CONCLUSION: The third-generation biomaterials possess the following two properties: degradation and bioactivity; and they can help the body heal itself once implanted. Regenerative medicine is a rapidly advancing field that opens a new and exciting opportunity for completely revolutionary therapeutic modalities and technologies.

In situ and in vitro colonization of Cathaya argyrophylla (Pinaceae) by ectomycorrhizal fungi.

Cathaya argyrophylla, a critically endangered conifer, is found to grow at four isolated areas located in subtropical mountains of China. To examine the involvement and usefulness of mycorrhizas for sustaining the population of this tree, we compared the root system, morphology, and structure of mycorrhizal roots of C. argyrophylla, which were collected from a natural stand and an artificial stand, each grown at a different location. More mycorrhizal roots were found for trees from an artificial stand. The presence of extramatrical mycelium, mantle, and Hartig net revealed that C. argyrophylla formed an ectomycorrhizal association in both sampling sites. Starch granules were found in mycorrhizal roots collected only from a natural stand. The aseptic synthesis of C. argyrophylla and Cenococcum geophilum was established for the first time in vitro. Typical ectomycorrhizas formed on seedlings on RM medium containing 0.1 g/l glucose, 5 weeks after inoculation. By light microscopy, the synthesized mycorrhizas showed a thin mantle from which emanated extramatrical hyphae and highly branched Hartig net. A simple, rapid, and convenient mycorrhiza synthesis system was developed, which facilitates further studies on ectomycorrhizal development of C. argyrophylla.

[Synthesis of (+/-) ibuprofen sugar derivatives].

AIM: (+/-) Ibuprofen sugar derivatives were prepared in order to decrease side-effects and increase bioavailability of (+/-) ibuprofen. METHODS: The synthesis of derivatives were performed using 1,2:3, 4-di-O-isopropylidene-beta-D-galactopyranose, 1,3,4,5-tetra-O-acetyl-2-deoxy-2-amino-beta-D-gluctopyranose, 3,4 6-tri-O-acetyl-2-deoxy-2-N-acetyl-beta-D-gluctosylamine and 2,3,6,2',3',4',6'-hepta-O-acetyl-beta-D-lactosylamine as glycosyl donors, respectively. Target products (4, 7, 12a, 12b, 13) were obtained after deprotection. RESULTS: Five compounds (4, 7, 12a, 12b, 13) were synthesized as new compounds. The structures of all objective compounds were confirmed by 1HNMR, 13CNMR, HMQC, COSY, IR and MS. CONCLUSION: It was found that 12a showed better anti-inflammatory activity than (+/-) ibuprofen.
