Exploring the mechanism of aroma production in fermented cherry juice by L. brevis LD1.0600 using flavomics and whole genome analysis.

This study focused on L.brevis LD1.0600 with excellent fermentation traits: it analyzed genome-wide key regulatory genes for micro-metabolites, combined with fermented cherry juice flavor metabolomics data, and used machine learning to explore correlations between gene regulation, metabolite production, and flavor formation. The SVM model screened and verified fermented cherry juice VOCs; through OAV and flavor wheel analysis, LD1.0600 emerged as the top-performing strain, with a sweet, fruity dominant aroma. Key aroma-active components (OAV > 100) included 2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol, benzaldehyde, 2-methyl-butanoic acid and hexanoic acid, and 2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol and hexanoic acid elevated by LD1.0600-regulated genes (Chrom1-001884, Chrom1-000925, fabF and Chrom1-000199). At the same time, through research, a "strain screening-SVM screening of DVCs-OAV screening of key aroma components-whole genome sequencing of flavor regulatory genes" system was established. This system can not only be applied to the screen fermentation strains, but also can be extended to the application of other fermentation products.

Regulation of astroglia on synaptic plasticity in the CA1 region of rat hippocampus.

The regulation of astroglia on synaptic plasticity in the CA1 region of rat hippocampus was examined. Rats were divided into three groups: the newly born (< 24 h), the juvenile (28-30 days) and the adult groups (90 - 100 days), with each group having 20 animals. The CA1 region of rat hippocampus was immunohistochemically and electron-microscopically examined, respectively, for the growth of astroglia and the ultrastructure of synapses. The high performance liquid chromatography was employed to determine the cholesterol content of rat hippocampus. In the newly-born rats, a large number of neurons were noted in the hippocampal CA1 region of the newly-born rats, and few astroglia and no synaptic structure were observed. In the juvenile group, a few astroglias and some immature synapses were found, which were less than those in adult rats (P < 0.01). The cholesterol content was 2.92 +/- 0.03 mg/g, 11.20 +/- 3.41 mg/g and 12.91 +/- 1.25 mg/g for newly born, the juvenile and the adult groups, respectively, with the differences among them being statistically significant (P < 0.01). Our study suggests that the astrocytes may play an important role in the synaptic formation and functional maturity of hippocampal neurons, which may be related to the secretion of cholesterol from astrocytes.

Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 gag-specific mucosal immunity after oral immunization with papillomavirus pseudoviruses encoding gag.

Mucosal surfaces are the primary portals for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission. Because systemic immunization, in general, does not induce effective mucosal immune responses, a mucosal HIV vaccine is urgently needed. For this study, we developed papillomavirus pseudoviruses that express HIV-1 Gag. The pseudoviruses are synthetic, nonreplicating viruses, yet they can produce antigens for a long time in the immune system. Here we show that oral immunization of mice by the use of papillomavirus pseudoviruses encoding Gag generated mucosal and systemic Gag-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes that effectively lysed Gag-expressing target cells. Furthermore, the pseudoviruses generated Gag-specific gamma interferon-producing T cells and serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) and mucosal IgA. In contrast, oral immunization with plasmid DNA encoding HIV-1 Gag did not induce specific immune responses. Importantly, oral immunization with the pseudoviruses induced Gag-specific memory cytotoxic T lymphocytes and protected mice against a rectal mucosal challenge with a recombinant vaccinia virus expressing HIV-1 Gag. Thus, papillomavirus pseudoviruses encoding Gag are a promising mucosal vaccine against AIDS.

Anterior cingulum abnormalities in male patients with schizophrenia determined through diffusion tensor imaging.

OBJECTIVE: This study used diffusion tensor imaging to examine fractional anisotropy in the anterior cingulum and posterior cingulum bundles in patients with schizophrenia. METHOD: Twenty-one male patients and 20 healthy comparison men were studied. RESULTS: Reduced fractional anisotropy was seen for both sides of the anterior cingulum in the schizophrenia patients, who also exhibited less left-greater-than-right asymmetry in the anterior cingulum than was seen in the comparison subjects. CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest structural disconnections in the anterior cingulum in patients with schizophrenia.

Abnormal anterior cingulum in patients with schizophrenia: a diffusion tensor imaging study.

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) can non-invasively examine the molecular diffusion of water in vivo and directly reflects the anatomical integrity of neural fibers in white matter. Fractional anisotropy (FA) can be calculated from DTI data, and utilized to evaluate white matter integrity. DTI was performed on 30 patients with schizophrenia and 19 healthy controls, and their FA values were subsequently measured in multiple brain regions. Statistical analyses revealed that FA values were decreased in the anterior cingulum of schizophrenia subjects. There were no significant differences between patients and controls in any other regions. This study supports the hypothesis that schizophrenia is associated with abnormal white matter integrity of the anterior cingulum.

A diffusion tensor imaging study of middle and superior cerebellar peduncle in male patients with schizophrenia.

Many studies have confirmed that the cerebellum takes part in higher-order cognitive coordination; profound fibers projecting to and from the cerebellum underlie its cognitive function. Since the superior and middle cerebellar peduncles are the main pathways of neural fibers in the cerebellum, these structures became the focus of our interest in evaluating the cognitive dysfunction reported in schizophrenia. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) was used to examine the anatomical integrity of the neural fibers in the superior and middle cerebellar peduncles. DTI was performed on 29 patients and 20 normal controls; we subsequently calculated the fractional anisotropy and mean diffusivity in these regions. Statistical analysis revealed that there was no significant difference between patients with schizophrenia and our matched control group. No structural abnormalities were detected in the white matter of the superior and middle cerebellar peduncles.

[Advances in studies on the structure of farmland shelterbelt ecosystem].

The ecological function of farmland shelterbelt system is determined by its structure. The spatio-temporal structure is a key aspect in related researches, which is very necessary to study the integrity, stability and durability of shelterbelt modules. In this article, the researches on the structure of farmland shelterbelt ecosystem were reviewed from the four scales of tree structure, shelterbelt structure, shelterbelts network and landscape structure. The principles, methods and productions of each scale were summarized, and the prospects were also discussed. Dynamic simulation of tree growth process in shelterbelts could be conducted by the theory of form and quality structure of tree and by fractal graphics, which were helpful to study the mechanism of individual trees and belts based on photosynthetic and transpiration mechanism of individual trees. The mechanism model of shelterbelt porosity should be conducted, so that, the sustainable yield model of shelterbelt management could be established, and the optimized model of shelterbelt networks with multi-special and multi-hierarchical structure could also be formed. Evaluating the reasonability, stability and durability of shelterbelt landscape based on the theories and methods of landscape ecology was an important task in the future studies.
