Environmental Gradients as a Dominant Force in the Macroevolution of a Host-Associated Marine Bacterium.

Natural selection is imposed by both abiotic environmental filtering and biotic interactions, yet their relative roles in shaping the deep phylogeny of widespread, generalist host-associated bacteria remain unclear. Here, we integrate large-scale phylogenomics, environmental sequencing, functional genomics, and global metagenomic analysis to demonstrate that tidal zonation overrides host association as the dominant macroevolutionary force structuring the marine bacterial genus Ruegeria. Analysis of 533 genomes and 74 global coastal metagenomes reveals that the intertidal-subtidal boundary structures the deepest phylogenetic splits, driving the repeated evolution of distinct ecotypes through independent zonation transitions across global coastlines. These ecotypes possess divergent genomic toolkits: intertidal strains are enriched for genes coding for stress resistance and anaerobic metabolism, whereas subtidal strains specialize in high-affinity nutrient scavenging. Our findings establish that predictable physicochemical gradients act as filters that generate foundational diversity from which specialized host symbionts subsequently emerge, reframing how environmental gradients shape microbial evolution at the eco-evolutionary interface.

[Computer aided intracranial aneurysm embolization with GDC].

OBJECTIVE: To establish an expert system that automatically generates optimal GDC selection program for the embolization of intracranial aneurysm. METHODS: Twenty highly cost-effective cases of intracranial aneurysm embolized with GDC dense packing were collected. Each of them contains information including aneurysm's volume measured by three-dimension digital subtraction angiography (3D DSA), aneurysm's location, maximum transverse diameter, maximum length diameter, and GDC selection program. An expert system made up of a case base, a mathematical model simulating experts' experience (established with the help of data mining techniques combining multi-layer perceptron network with polyhedrons in high dimensional space), and data envelopment analysis (DEA), was implemented. RESULTS: When the user inputted four required parameters (volume, location, maximum transverse diameter, and maximum length diameter) into the expert system and clicked the "program design" button, candidate GDC selection program(s) would be presented in the result box. CONCLUSION: Case base, data mining techniques, and DEA can be used to establish the expert system that automatically generates optimal GDC selection program for the embolization of intracranial aneurysm. Its clinical value needs to be further evaluated.

[Three dimensional digital subtraction angiography in volume embolization ratio measurement of densely packing experimental aneurysms].

OBJECTIVE: To calculate the volume embolization ratio of densely packing experimental aneurysms by three dimensional digital subtraction angiography (3D-DSA). METHODS: Six experimental crotch aneurysms were created microsurgically in the common carotid artery of white rabbits. Two weeks later, each aneurysm's volume was measured with 3D-DSA surface shaded display(SSD) and the correction of lacteprene balloon calibration method. In the same time, the aneurysms were densely packed with electric detachable coils. The volume of coils that were used in each aneurysm was calculated separately. The ratio of coils volume and aneurysm volume was the volume embolization ratio (VER). RESULTS: The aneurysms volumes measured by 3D DSA SSD ranged from 0.037 to 0.087 ml. The VER ranged from 23.5% to 32.5% (average 27.4%). CONCLUSION: The minimum VER of densely packing experimental crotch aneurysms with electronic detachable coils was 23.5%.

Magnetic resonance imaging characteristics with pathological correlation of cavernous malformation in cavernous sinus.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze extracerebral cavernous malformation located in the cavernous sinus and correlate their magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features to pathological findings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nineteen patients (5 men and 14 women; mean age, 50.6 years; range, 32-71 years) with surgically verified cavernous malformations in the cavernous sinus were reviewed. MRI including T1-weighted, T2-weighted, and postcontrasted T1-weighted imaging was carried out in all instances with a 1.5-T superconductive system (Signa; General Electric Medical Systems, Milwaukee, WI). RESULTS: All these lesions measured from 2.5 cm to 6 cm (average, 4.3 cm) with 13 lesions located to the right side and 6 to the left side. Magnetic resonance images showed that 18 cases were hypointense to white matter on T1-weighted images with only one case showed mixed hypointensity and hyperintensity. On T2-weighted images, 17 cases showed marked homogeneous hyperintensity, 1 case showed marked hyperintensity with some signal void structures and 1 with mixed intensity. Marked homogeneous enhancement after contrast material administration was found in 7 cases, and the remaining 12 showed marked heterogeneous enhancement. Pathologically, these lesions can be classified as type A, type B, and type C. Type A was sponge-like with intact pseudocapsule; type B was mulberry-like with the pseudocapsule incomplete or absent; and type C was composed of both mulberry-like composition and sponge-like composition. Lesions with homogeneous contrast enhancement on MRI correlated with type A pathological findings, whereas those with heterogeneous enhancement correlated with type B and type C pathological findings. Asymmetrical dumbbell-shaped masses of 13 cases involving the sellar and round masses of 6 cases with 2 protruding into the sellar were found. All of the cavernous malformations displaced the adjacent temporal lobe without adjacent brain edema. The internal carotid arteries were displaced or encased in all cases. CONCLUSIONS: If a well-demarcated, homogeneous high signal intensity lesion on T2-weighted images with a dumbbell configuration involving both parasellar and sellar regions with marked heterogeneous or homogeneous enhancement is found, the diagnosis of cavernous sinus cavernous malformation should be entertained.
