Search for invisible decays of eta and eta' in J/psi --> phi eta and phi eta'.

Using a data sample of 58 x 10(6) J/psi decays collected with the Beijing Spectrometer II detector at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider, searches for invisible decays of eta and eta' in J/psi to phi eta and phi eta' are performed. The phi signals, which are reconstructed in K+K- final states, are used to tag the eta and eta' decays. No signals are found for the invisible decays of either eta or eta', and upper limits at the 90% confidence level are determined to be 1.65 x 10(-3) for the ratio B(eta-->invisible)/B(eta --> gamma gamma) and 6.69 x 10(-2) for B(eta' --> invisible)/B(eta' --> gammagamma). These are the first searches for eta and eta' decays into invisible final states.

Observation of a broad 1-- resonant structure around 1.5 GeV/c2 in the K+K- mass spectrum in J/psi-->K+K-pi0.

A broad peak is observed at low K+K- invariant mass in J/psi-->K+K-pi(0) decays found in a sample of 5.8x10(7) J/psi events collected with the BESII detector. The statistical significance of the broad resonance is much larger than 5sigma. A partial wave analysis shows that the J;{PC} of this structure is 1--. Its pole position is determined to be [1576(-55)(+49)(stat)-91+98(syst)] MeV/c(2)-i/2[818(-23)(+22)(stat)-133+64(syst)] MeV/c(2). These parameters are not compatible with any known meson resonances.

Measurements of the branching fractions for psi(3770)-->D(0)D[over ](0), D+D-, DD[over ], and the resonance parameters of psi(3770) and psi(2S).

We measure the branching fractions for psi(3770)-->D(0)D[over ](0), D+D-, DD[over ], and non-DD[over ] to be (46.7+/-4.7+/-2.3)%, (36.9+/-3.7+/-2.8)%, (83.6+/-7.3+/-4.2)%, and (16.4+/-7.3+/-4.2)%, respectively. The resonance parameters of psi(3770) and psi(2S) are measured to be M_(psi(3770))=3772.2+/-0.7+/-0.3 MeV, Gamma_(psi(3770))(tot)=26.9+/-2.4+/-0.3 MeV, and Gamma_(psi(3770))(ee)=251+/-26+/-11 eV; M_(psi(2S))=3685.5+/-0.0+/-0.3 MeV, Gamma_(psi(2S))(tot)=331+/-58+/-2 keV, and Gamma_(psi(2S))(ee)=2.330+/-0.036+/-0.110 keV. We also measure the light hadron R value to be R(uds)=2.262+/-0.054+/-0.109 in the energy region from 3.660 to 3.872 GeV.

Observation of a near-threshold enhancement in the omega(phi) mass spectrum from the doubly OZI-suppressed decay J/psi-->gamma(omega)phi.

An enhancement near threshold is observed in the omega(phi) invariant mass spectrum from the doubly Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka-suppressed decays of J/psi-->gamma(omega)phi, based on a sample of 5.8 x 10(7) J/psi events collected with the BESII detector. A partial wave analysis shows that this enhancement favors JP=0+, and its mass and width are M=1812(+19)(-26)(stat)+/-18(syst) MeV/c2 and Gamma=105+/-20(stat)+/-28(syst) MeV/c2. The product branching fraction is determined to be B(J/psi-->gammaX)B(X-->omega(phi))=[2.61+/-0.27(stat)+/-0.65(syst)]x10(-4).

Observation of a resonance in Chi(1835) in J/psi --> gammapi+ pi- eta-.

The decay channel J/psi --> gamma(pi)(+)pi(-)eta is analyzed using a sample of 5.8 x 10(7) J/psi events collected with the BESII detector. A resonance, the Chi(1835), is observed in the pi(+)pi(-)eta invariant-mass spectrum with a statistical significance of 7.7 sigma. A fit with a Breit-Wigner function yields a mass M = 1833.7 +/- 6.1(stat) +/- 2.7(syst) MeV/c(2), a width Tau = 67.7 +/- 20.3(stat) +/- 7.7(syst) MeV/c(2), and a product branching fraction B(J/psi --> gammaChi) . B(Chi --> pi(+)pi(-)eta) = [2.2 +/- 0.4(stat) +/- 0.4(syst)] x 10(-4). The mass and width of the Chi(1835) are not compatible with any known meson resonance. Its properties are consistent with expectations for the state that produces the strong pp mass threshold enhancement observed in the J/psi --> gammapp process at BESII.

In vitro induction of PDT resistance in HT29, HT1376 and SK-N-MC cells by various photosensitizers.

Our approach to examine the mechanism(s) of action for photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been via the generation of PDT-resistant cell lines. In this study we used three human cell lines, namely, human colon adenocarcinoma (HT29), human bladder carcinoma and human neuroblastoma. The three photosensitizers used were Photofrin, Nile Blue A and aluminum phthalocyanine tetrasulfonate. The protocol for inducing resistance consisted of repeated in vitro photodynamic treatments with a photosensitizer to the 1-10%-survival level followed by regrowth of single surviving colonies. Varying degrees of resistance were observed. The three induced variants of the HT29 cell line were the most extensively studied. Their ratios of increased survival at the LD90 level range between 1.5- and 2.62-fold more resistant.

[Research proceeding on the effect of microgravity on erythropoiesis].

The reduction of red blood cell mass is a main change of hematology under microgravity. It is considered that the decrease of erythroid cell production is the key cause. The studies on reticulocytes, Price-Jones curve, ferrum turn over, cytology of bone marrow and Erythropoietin (Epo) level suggested the suppression of erythropoiesis was due to microgravity. The mechanisms about it and the aspects of research in the future were discussed briefly.

Stimulation of endogenous GH and interleukin-6 receptors selectively activates different Jaks and Stats, with a Stat5 specific synergistic effect of dexamethasone.

The interaction of GH, interleukin (IL)-6 and glucocorticoids is likely to be important in regulating the GH-insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I axis. The signalling cascades activated by GH and IL-6 appear to be very similar, as demonstrated by studies using overexpression of the receptor and other components of the Jak-Stat and mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase pathways. Here we show that the human embryonic kidney cell line 293 (HEK293) expresses GH and IL-6 receptors endogenously. To determine which specific pathways might be activated by the two cytokines, at physiological levels of all components, we studied GH and IL-6 mediated signal transduction both under basal conditions and in the presence of overexpressed receptors and Stat proteins. Our results suggest a receptor specificity of Jak2 for GH receptors, and Jak1 for IL-6 receptors. Stat activation in response to GH and IL-6 was determined by reporter gene induction. Both GH and IL-6 were able to induce the reporter gene containing the Stat5 responsive element (LHRE) but the IL-6 response appeared to be mediated mainly through Stat3 activation. In contrast, the reporter gene containing the Stat3 responsive element (SIE) was IL-6 specific. The levels of gene induction by GH and IL-6 were not altered by the co-stimulation with GH and IL-6, suggesting that there is little cross-talk at the Jak-Stat activation level between the two cytokines. Neither GH nor IL-6 activated the MAP-kinase responsive serum response element (SRE), unless GH receptors or gp130 were overexpressed. Transfection of Stat3 or Stat5 expression vectors enhanced the response to GH and IL-6. Stimulation with dexamethasone synergistically enhanced GH activation of the LHRE reporter gene but had no effect on the IL-6 activation of the same reporter or on the SIE reporter gene. Thus, our studies suggest that while each cytokine, GH and IL-6, may activate various members of the Jak-Stat pathway in overexpression studies, specific activation of Stat3 by IL-6 and of Jak2 and Stat5 by GH can be observed in HEK293 cells and that in this system the synergistic effect of dexamethasone appears specific for Stat5.

[Effects of tail suspension on learning and memory function of mice].

Objective. To study the effects of simulated weightlessness on learning and memory capability of the brain. Method. Accuracy fraction, error frequency and pass rate were observed among control, restrained control, tail suspended (TS) control, restrained, and tail suspended mice in square water maze tests. And latent period and error time were observed in control and 30 degrees tail suspension mice in step down test. Result. The indices did not change significantly during learning period. Accuracy fraction of tail suspended group was reduced significantly in the tests as compared with pretest values. In step down test, latent period and error time showed no difference between TS 5 h and 2 d in untrained mice, but shortened evidently after TS 2 d and prolonged after TS 7 d in trained mice, which suggested the degradation of learning and memory ability after TS 5 h and 2 d respectively. Conclusion. Acute tail suspension depressed brain's learning ability and quality, while tail suspension of 7 d and 12 d impaired the spatial memory in mice.

[Changes of cerebral circulation during weightlessness or simulated weightlessness].

The results about studies on changes of the cerebral circulation during weightlessness/simulated weightlessness were reviewed in this paper. The possible influencing mechanism of weightlessness on cerebral circulation and its physiological significance were summarized. It could be concluded that the changes of cerebral circulation were the results of self-regulation of the brain to maintain its normal function, and it might play an important role in the genesis of postflight orthostatic intolerance.
