[Detection of serum immunoglobulins in pulmonary acariasis patients].

The IgG, IgA, IgM levels in sera of 51 patients suffered from pulmonary ascariasis and the serum IgE level in 16 of them were determined using single immunodiffusion technique or biotin-avidin enzyme immunosorbent assay (ABC-ELISA). The results showed that the IgM level of the patients was approaching to that of the normals while IgG (169.77 +/- 46.91 U/ml), IgA (308.39 +/- 91.83 U/ml) and IgE (458.90 +/- 273.64 U/ml) levels of the patients increased significantly. This suggests that some components of mites may have stimulated the humoral immunoreactions of the host.

[An investigation on injectional gluteal muscle contracture in childhood in Mianyang City].

An investigation of 9845 healthy children with age of 3-12 years in Mianyang urban area has been made by us. One hundred and twenty-two cases of injectional gluteal muscle contracture were diagnosed. The morbidity is 1.36% and it is more common in boys than in girls (OR: 3.71). The prevalence rate of the age group from 4 to 7 is highest and it decreases markedly with aging. This is probably due to self-recovery of some mild cases. Repeating injections of diluted penicillin by 1.5-2% Benzyl alcohol are the predominant causative factor of the disease. If Benzyl alcohol as a solvent for penicillin in children was no longer using, it would possibly reduce the morbidity. Up to now, this is a common iatrogenic disease in pediatric population and special attention should be paid to it.

[Determination of trace arsenic in soy and vinegar by catalytic oscillopolarography].

The determination of trace arsenic in soy and vinegar by oscillopolarography was investigated. A sensitive catalytic wave of arsenic appeared at -0.73V (vs. SCE) in 2mol/L H2SO4-0.2 mol/L KI-5 micrograms/ml Te systems. The linear relationship was 0-100ppb. The determination of arsenic in soy and vinegar was carried out after digestion with nitricperchloric acids. The detection limit was 1 ppb. The relative standard deviations were 4.7% and 8.8% respectively from the determinations of soy and vinegar. Recoveries were 92%-102% and 96%-110% respectively.

The role of the complement system in shock and tissue injury induced by tumour necrosis factor and endotoxin.

It has previously been shown that tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF), together with bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS), induces shock and bowel necrosis in the rat. Since the complement system plays an important role in inflammation and tissue injury, its role has been studied in a similar model in mice. In most of the present experiments, a low dose (0.2 micrograms/g) of TNF was used for priming, followed 30 min later by LPS (3 micrograms/g), and the experiment was terminated in 150 min. It is shown that: (i) TNF exerts no systemic effects by itself; LPS elicits only mild hypotension but causes no lethality; (ii) TNF-primed mice show exaggerated effects of shock, hypothermia, haemoconcentration and bowel injury after LPS; the majority of these mice died within 150 min; (iii) administration of LPS alone mildly activates the complement system in vivo, while TNF alone has no effect; (iv) the effects of TNF and LPS on complement activation are synergistic; (v) the acute development of shock and bowel injury in response to TNF-LPS is dependent on an intact complement system, more specifically C5, since C5-deficient mice were protected from TNF-LPS-induced shock and tissue injury; C5-deficient mice also showed less hypotension, hypothermia, haemoconcentration and better intestinal perfusion compared with C5-sufficient animals; (vi) however, when the priming dose of TNF was raised to 0.5 micrograms/g, most of the C5-deficient mice developed marked hypothermia, hypotension, haemoconcentration, bowel injury and died. Thus, it is concluded that TNF and LPS act synergistically in activating the complement system, which plays an important role in mediating the tissue injury and lethality induced by these agents.

Heparan sulfate-mediated binding of epithelial cell surface proteoglycan to thrombospondin.

Purified NMuMG mouse mammary epithelial cell surface proteoglycan (PG), a membrane-intercalated core protein bearing both heparan sulfate and chondroitin sulfate glycosaminoglycan (GAG) chains, binds to a thrombospondin (TSP) affinity column and is eluted by a salt gradient. Double immunofluorescence microscopy demonstrates extensive co-localization of bound exogenous TSP and cells bearing exposed cell surface PG at their apical surface. The binding, as assayed by both methods, is heparitinase-sensitive, but not chondroitinase-sensitive. Alkali-released heparan sulfate chains bind to a TSP affinity column, similarly to native PG, whereas the chrondroitin sulfate chains do not. Core protein does not bind to TSP. These results indicate that NMuMG cells bind TSP via their surface PG and that the binding is mediated by the heparan sulfate chains.

[Surgery of laryngeal cancer in patients with heart diseases. Report of 32 cases].

Operation for laryngeal cancer in patients with heart disease is considered dangerous. Many surgeons never have performed it. The chance of operation is thus lost, or the operation postponed. From 1980 to 1988, 32 patients with heart diseases had been operated upon for laryngeal cancer. No one died of operation, nor did any patient died of heart disease during operation. The 3-year survival rate was 50%. The low survival rate might be the result of delayed operation in the majority of cases. It is the author's opinion that operation for laryngeal cancer in patients with heart disease have to be done early.

Auditory space representation in the inferior colliculus of the FM bat, Eptesicus fuscus.

The auditory spatial response areas of 333 inferior collicular (IC) neurons of Eptesicus fuscus were studied under free-field acoustic stimulus conditions. A stimulus was delivered from a loudspeaker placed 14 cm in front of a bat and the best frequency of an encountered neuron was determined. Then a best frequency (BF) stimulus was delivered as the loudspeaker was moved across the frontal auditory space to determine the response center of the neuron. At the response center, the neuron had the lowest minimum threshold. The stimulus was then raised 3-15 dB above the lowest minimum threshold of the neuron and the spatial response area for each stimulus intensity was measured. The response center and spatial response area of a neuron measured with a one-octave downward-sweep FM stimulus were similar to those measured with the pure tone pulse. The spatial response area of a neuron expanded asymmetrically with the stimulus intensity. High BF neurons generally had smaller spatial response areas than low BF neurons had. All 333 response centers were located in the contralateral auditory space. Response centers of low BF neurons tended to be located laterally while those of high BF neurons were located medially. Although each neuron had a point of lowest minimum threshold in the contralateral auditory space, the point-to-point representation of the auditory space was not systematically organized. This representation was not correlated with the recording sites of the neurons in the mediolateral, posteroanterior and dorsoventral axes of the IC.
