The zoapatle V--the effect of kauradienoic acid upon uterine contractility.

Kauradienoic acid was obtained from the hexanic extract of M. tomentosa (Cerv) leaves by chromatographic separation. This substance influenced the in vitro contractility of the rat, dog and guinea pig uterine strips. It also induced strong contractions of the guinea pig uterus in vivo when administered intravenously, without changes on arterial blood pressure. The effects produced by the plant infusion, the hexanic extract and pure species were compared. The hexanic of other utero-active compounds in M. tomentosa in addition to those already described is discussed.

Active components in Perezia roots.

The effects produced by perezone, which was isolated from Perezia cuernavacana Rob. et Greenm., and hydroxyperezone monoangelate, from Perezia hebeclada (D.C.) A.Gray, on intestinal motility in vivo and in vitro in animal experiments are reported. It is suggested that hydroxyperezone monoangelate is a laxative principle present in certain species of the Perezia genus, with use in Mexican folk medicine.

A uterotonic substance from Annona cherimola seeds.

Water extract from seeds of Annona cherimola was tested in vitro on uterus strips of nongravid guinea-pigs. The extract resulted in possessing utero-constrictive properties due to the presence of a gluco-steroidal substance isolated from it.

[Pharmacodynamics of alcoholic and aqueous extracts from the Casimiroa edulis seed].

The hypnotic properties of leaves and seed of Casimiroa edulis (zapote blanco) a tropical fruit, are well known. In the present investigation, pharmacological studies on aqueous and alcoholic extracts were carried out in dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs, using different experimental models. The action of the extracts upon blood pressure, cardiac activity, respiration rate, muscular tone, electroencephalographic activity, sleep and other parameters were studied too. In addition to, studies upon isolated human, cat, rabbit and guinea pig tissues gave information about the extracts effect on smooth muscle activity. It was found that both aqueous and alcoholic extract of the seed of zapote blanco produced marked hypotension in all animal species, which was followed by a sleep-like stage. Also a definitive oxitocic effect in vivo and in vitro was demonstrated suggesting the presence of a potent uterus constricting substance.

[Quantitative analysis of the electroencephalographic activity during human sleep].

Correlation of hormonal changes and EEG activity requires objective measurements to define the behavior of the different frequency bands during sleep. With this purpose, EEG activity of six healthy male volunteers (19-22 years) was recorded throughout all night during spontaneous sleep. The C4-left mastoid EEG combination was channeled to a frequency analyzer with four band pass filters (beta, alpha, theta, and delta) using a one minute averaging interval. Analyzer data were fed to an IBM-1130 computer, programmed with RC filter recursive algorithm. Sleep stages were characterized in the polygraphic record (Rechtshaffen criteria), and identified in the smoothed profile. The latter was computed for mean voltage value of each band during the sleep stages. Differences in the behavior of each band throughout sleep stages were statistically tested. Delta activity showed the highest discriminatory capacity characterized by a statistically different mean voltage value in all sleep stages, with the exception of R-I. The method is proposed for quantitative correlation of the EEG sleep phenomena with another physiological parameters.

Further steps in the research of cortico-hypothalamic interactions in cats.

The cerebral cortex of the cat was systematically stimulated with electric shocks, and the recording of the evoked potentials in the hypothalamus was performed with macro- and microelectrodes stereotaxically guided. Stimulation of definite cortical loci evoked potentials in several hypothalamic nuclei studied. Three focuses were found, coincident with the so called "primary sensory area" of the neocortex. Hypothalamic responses elicited by stimulation of the ipsilateral cortex have greater amplitude and shorter latency than those evoked by contralateral stimulation. The "uconditioning" stimulus given on the cortex produces on the "test" stimulus response an inhibitory effect if the interstimulus delay is shorter than 0.6 sec, and a facilitatory if it is greater than 0.6 sec.

Mexican medicinal plants used for treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

This article reviews the state of research for a number of plants traditionally related to treatment of cardiovascular diseases. It stresses the importance of both anthropological surveys and historical studies for the proper understanding of this ancient and still very popular medicine.

[Model of intraluminal perfusion of the guinea pig ileum in vitro in the study of the antidiarrheal properties of the guava (Psidium guajava)].

An experimental in vitro model was developed for the study of plant extracts reported by traditional medicines in the treatment of diarrhea. The guinea-pig isolated ileum is perfused with the plant extract using an intraluminal approach. The peristaltic reflex is induced by electrical stimulation while the plant extract is perfused. The spasmolytic effects of Psidium guajava leaf methanol, hexane and water extracts were demonstrated suggesting the existence of two different types of active components. The results obtained allow to propose this in vitro method as a useful model to reproduce some of the characteristics of the oral way of administration of plant extracts.
