[The difference in the time for the appearance of acupuncture effects between the subjects with and without PSM during acupuncture of neiguan].

It has been reported that ECG of the patients of coronary heart disease with PSM got marked improvement when Neiguan (PC6) was punctured, in comparison with the patients without propagated sensation along meridians (PSM). The difference between the two was significant. However some others reported that the acupuncture effects between the two had no striking difference. Authors detected that during acupuncture of Neiguan the change of ECG of the patients showed dynamic character and some patients without PSM were also marked as the duration of acupuncture was prolonged. For this reason, this paper was aimed to observe whether any difference appeared in the development of acupuncture effects between the patients with and without PSM. One hundred and seventy cases of patients with coronary heart disease were observed, of which 86 were male and 84 female, aged 35-83 years. Varying degree of PSM appeared in 80 of them, but not in the remaining 90. ECG was recorded with polygraph (model SJ-42) before acupuncture. Then the Neiguan acupoint of the left forearm was punctured by slow twisting for 5 minutes and the feature of PSM was carefully observed. Another recording of ECG was taken after retaining needle for 10 minutes. Retaining needle lasted for 30 minutes in a part of the patients and the needle was manipulated every 16 minutes in order to keep the needling sensation.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[Observation on the phenomenon of propagated sensation along meridians in youngsters].

That the opinion on the relation between the propagated sensation along meridians (PSM) and the age of the subjects was divergent in the results reported by some authors. In the last 10 years, we have performed a systematic investigation on PSM on a group of 536 youngsters. The main characteristics of PSM in youngsters were just the same as that of adults. However, the incidence of PSM in youngsters, particularly the degree of distinctness of PSM, was by far higher than that of adults. The results were stable and could be repeated in the experiments performed in different years. It showed that there was surely a close relation between the degree of distinctness of PSM and the age of subjects. This fact can not be appropriately explained at present. However, it provides an important clue to clarify the factors which influence the appearance of PSM, and in turn to promote the improvement of the therapeutic effect of acupuncture and cilacriation of the mechanism underlying the formation of PSM.

[Studies on the low skin impedance points and the feature of its distribution along the channels by microcomputer. II. Distribution of LSIPS along the channels].

The distribution of low skin impedance poionts (LSIPS) was observed on 60 healthy volunteers with a computer system designed to measure the skin impedance. The results demonstrated that LSIPs basically distributed along the channels. The method used was reliable and results obtained was repeatable. Some problems, which puzzled the researchers for so many years, now have been clarified and the method for measuring the skin impedance has been developed to a new level. Under the specified condition, the skin impedance can be used as an indicator to plot out the courses of channels in the research.

[Displaying of meridian courses travelling over human body surface under natural conditions].

Based on the technique of infrared image information, the instantaneous infrared signals of isoenergy radiated from body surface was sampled and displayed continuously in this work. The inherent infrared radiant tracks over the body surface was successfully displayed under the natural conditions, without any artificial stimulation or interference. Fourty nine times of observation were performed on 30 volunteers and 594 lines of radiant track have been recorded. Most of the radiant tracks were line or narrow band in shape. Their courses coincided or basically coincided with that of the classical Fourteen Meridians. It seemed to be considerably identical with the classical meridian course in about 30% of the cases observed and some of them travelled over several body regions along meridian courses. The method established in this work first enables us to recognize figuratively the inherent meridian courses travelling over the body surface. The description on the meridians in the books of traditional Chinese medicine was thus evidenced. The aim pursued by the researchers in this field for a long period of time has now been realized, though something still remained to be further improved in this work. The facts irrefutably confirmed that meridian is the inherent organization and function of human body and there must be a corresponding substantial basis in 'periphery'. A more clear approach for elucidation of the essence of meridians has come into view from above facts.

[Displaying of the infrared radiant track along meridians on the back of human body].

Based on the technique of infrared information, we improved the experimental method and displayed the meridian courses over the body surface successfully. Observation of the meridians on the back was performed on 23 healthy adults in this work, and 164 lines of infrared radiant track have been recorded. About 40% of them travelled through the back from lumbus to neck and their courses coincided or basically coincided with Du meridian and Urinary-Bladder meridian in that region. Several meridian courses could be displayed simultaneously in the observation. Symmetry was one of the important characters of the infrared radiant track on back region and it appeared alone in one side only in occasional case. The intensity of infrared radiation was the highest in Du meridian, the medial line of Urinary-Bladder meridian in second and the lateral line of Urinary-Bladder meridian was the lowest. Since there are no large blood vessels in longitudinal direction in the subcutaneous tissue of this region, therefore, the radiant track recorded obviously bared no relation to the large blood vessels. The above results demonstrated that the courses of Du meridian and Urinary-Bladder meridian were inherent in human body and could be displayed objectively.

[Distribution of low skin impedance points along meridians over the medial side of forearm].

The distribution of low skin impedance points (LSIP) over the medial side of forearm was plotted with a computer system designed for the measurement of skin impedance. Twelve volunteers were under observation. The exploring electrode moved forward in a even velocity from the radial axis of forearm to its ulnar axis and crossed the Lung meridian, Pericardium meridian and Heart meridian in succession. Thus, the measurement covered the whole area of the medial side of forearm. The results showed that the most of 391 LSIPs located right on or within 5 mm bilaterally to the travelling courses of Three Ying Meridians of Hand. It could be found in the area between every two meridians only in a few cases. Just so, the courses of Three Ying Meridians of Hand were clearly displayed. Under the condition of this experiment, LSIP appeared randomly, but viewing the situation as a whole, the distribution of LSIPs was still following the meridian courses. The results further demonstrated that the distribution of LSIPs along meridian courses not caused by the errors in measurement, but really a biological phenomenon, which was objectively existed.

[Observation on the distribution of LSIPs along three yang meridians as well as ren and du meridians].

The results of our previous works demonstrated that the low skin impedance points (LSIPs) basically distributed along the meridian courses. In order to further clarify what extent LSIPs distributed along the meridians and the feature of distribution of LSIPs in different part of the body, the Three Yang Meridians of Foot as well as Ren and Du Meridians were studied in this work once again. Twenty five volunteers were under observation. As known to all, the Three Yang Meridians of Foot, which travel over several body regions, are the longest three with most complicated courses, among the Twelve Normal Meridians. Ren and Du meridians, which travel along the anterior and posterior median line of the trunk respectively, are the representative of the Eight Extra Meridians. Regardless of their particular travelling courses, the overwhelming majority of LSIPs located right on or within 5 mm bilaterally to their courses. It could be found in non-meridian area only in a few cases. The results of observation on the back is especially to be noticed. Evidently, LSIPs appeared randomly when the exploring electrode moved forward from one side of the back, crossed 5 meridians in succession, to another side. Even so, viewing the situation as a whole, LSIPs still concentrated along 5 bands, basically coincided with the course of Du Meridian and Three Yang Meridians of Foot. The results further confirmed that LSIPs really distributed along the meridian courses in the main.

Imaging at high magnetic fields: initial experiences at 4 T.

This article reviews the preliminary experiences and the results obtained on the human brain at 4 T at the University of Minnesota. Anatomical and functional images are presented. Contrary to initial expectations and the early results, it is possible to obtain high-resolution images of the human brain with exquisite T1 contrast, delineating structures especially in the basal ganglia and thalamus, which were not observed clearly in 1.5-T images until now. These 4-T images are possible using a new approach that achieves maximal contrast for different T1 values at approximately the same repetition time and has built-in tolerance to variations in B1 magnitude. For functional images, the high field provides increased contribution from the venuoles and the capillary bed because the susceptibility-induced alterations in 1/T2* from these small-diameter vessels increase quadratically with the magnitude of the main field. Images obtained with short echo times at 4 T, and by implication at lower fields with correspondingly longer echo times, are expected to be dominated by contributions from large venous vessel or in-flow effects from the large arteries; such images are undesirable because of their poor spatial correspondence with actual sites of neuronal activity.

Experimental and clinical investigations of human insoluble bone matrix gelatin. A report of 24 cases.

Human bone matrix gelatin (hBMG) was implanted into the quadriceps muscles of mice to determine its osteoinductive activity and immune responses. The host mouse muscle assay reacted positively to the hBMG, providing an experimental basis for clinical application. At two weeks after implantation, cartilage was produced in the mouse muscle, and new bone and bone marrow were formed at three to four weeks after implantation. Human bone matrix gelatin, which was thus shown to have osteoinductive activity, was subsequently implanted in 24 patients. Generally, the bone defects were filled with new bone tissue with increased density within two to four months after operation. Nonunion and delayed unions were healed at two to six months after surgery.

Evaluation of a promotional strategy to increase bicycle helmet use by children.

Bicycle-related head injuries are an important cause of death and disability, despite the availability of helmets. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a school-based bicycle helmet promotion program in increasing helmet use by children while controlling for secular trends. Two high-income and two low-income schools in an urban Canadian community were selected to receive a bicycle helmet promotion intervention, with the remaining 18 schools serving as controls. Approximately 1800 observations of bicycling children were made at randomly selected observational sites 2 to 5 months after the intervention to assess changes in behavior. Helmet use at all observation sites tripled from 3.4% (1990, preintervention) to 16% (1991, postintervention). In the high-income intervention area, observed helmet use rose dramatically from 4% to 36% in contrast to the more modest increase in the high-income control area from 4% to 15%. In the low-income intervention area, there was a modest increase from 1% to 7%, but it did not differ from the increase in the low-income control area from 3% to 13%. The program was highly successful in children of high-income families but not in children of low-income families. Developing strategies for low-income families remains a priority.

Analysis of endogenous and exogenous nuclear translocation of fibroblast growth factor-1 in NIH 3T3 cells.

Nuclear localization of fibroblast growth factors (FGF) have been reported by many laboratories. We demonstrate here that FGF-1, the precursor for acidic FGF contains a putative nuclear translocation sequence (NTS) NYKKPKL, which is able to direct the expression of the bacterial beta galactosidase (beta gal) gene to the nucleus of transfected NIH 3T3 cells. However, this NTS is unable to target either FGF-1 itself or a FGF-1-beta gal fusion protein into the nucleus, suggesting that FGF-1 may contain an additional sequence which prevents endogenously expressed FGF-1 from being translocated into the nucleus. Indeed, when FGF-1 was fused to the NTS derived from the yeast histone 2B gene, the chimeric construct also failed to be transported into the nucleus either by itself or as a beta gal fusion protein. Interestingly, when 125I-FGF-1 was used to stimulate quiescent NIH 3T3 cells, a significant amount of internalized 125I-FGF-1 (approximately 10%) was found within the nucleus and the nuclear localization of FGF-1 through the exogenous pathway could be significantly reduced by suramin, an inhibitor of the interaction of FGF-1 with its receptor. These data suggest that while FGF-1 contains a NTS, nuclear translocation requires an exogenous and not an endogenous pathway.

Partial gene duplication as a cause of human disease.

Tandem duplication of large regions of DNA, including duplication of whole genes, provides a substrate for genetic evolution. Tandem duplication of smaller regions involving parts of genes is now recognized as a contributor to the mutation spectrum that results in genetic disease. In this review, more than 30 unrelated partial gene duplications that have been implicated in the genesis of human genetic disease are presented and the pathogenic effects and frequency of such duplications are summarized. The mechanisms of duplication formation are analyzed with special emphasis on the molecular details of the nucleotide sequences at the duplication junctions. Evidence to date suggests that duplication may arise from either homologous (Alu-Alu) recombination or nonhomologous recombination, the latter possibly mediated by topoisomerases. For the dystrophin gene, in which most duplications have been identified, these recombination events are intrachromosomal, suggesting that unequal sister chromatid exchange is the major mechanism.

31P NMR spectroscopy of the human heart at 4 T: detection of substantially uncontaminated cardiac spectra and differentiation of subepicardium and subendocardium.

31P NMR spectroscopy of the human heart was undertaken at 4 T to investigate whether spectra localized exclusively to the myocardium can be obtained. Utilizing a Fourier series window approach to spectroscopic imaging, we find that at least two layers across the anterior left ventricle wall can be detected, with voxel sizes of about 8 cm3.

Structural studies on metal-serum albumin. IV. The interaction of Zn(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II) with HSA and BSA.

There have been no detailed and reliable studies on the environment and configuration of Zn(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II) in the metal centers of human serum albumin and bovine serum albumin to date. In this paper the authentic evidence for the involvement of the cystinyl sulfur atoms in the ligation to the zinc group ions has been obtained from the X-ray photoelectron spectra. The belief that each of the zinc group ions possesses several similar binding sites in human- and bovine serum albumin and is bound to the deprotonated thiol group (-RS-) of the cysteinyl residues to form tetrahedral and linear metal centers has been further confirmed by the treatment of ligand to metal charge transfer data with Jorgensen's method. According to these results, we have inferred that these binding sites may be located at the seventeen disulfide bridges, most likely at the seven pairs of adjacent disulfide bridges between positions 75 and 567, in the serum albumins.
