Experimental studies on immune-complex in situ type glomerulonephritis in rabbits treated with mai-luo-tong and natural indigo.

By injection of C-BSA, immune-complex in situ type glomerulonephritis was duplicated in rabbits and treated with Mai-Luo-Tong and natural Indigo. The results showed that proteinuria in the treated groups M and Q was decreased. The difference between group M and control group is statistically significant (P < 0.05). Under light and electron microscope, although glomerular basement membrane was irregularly thickened and subepithelial dense electron deposited in the treated group, but microthrombus, erythrocytes and platelets aggregation and leukocytes impaction were not seen within glomerular capillaries. Also in groups C, Q, M, mesenteric cell count was 99.40 +/- 18.53, 92.87 +/- 17.89, 66.55 +/- 7.75 respectively, the M. Q groups are compared with group C, the result is of statistical significance (P < 0.05) and there is no apparent glomerular fibrosis in the treated groups.

[Injection of 5-fluorouracil in the treatment of tubal pregnancy through salpingo-catheter under hysteroscopy].

Seventeen women with unruptured tubal pregnancy were given 5-FU through salpingo-catheter under hysteroscopy. In one case the injection failed because the tube opening could not be found. The success rate of salpingo-catheterization was 94.12% (16/17). The cure rate for the tubal pregnancies was 88.24% (15/17). 12 cases received injection once and 3 cases twice. The dose of 5-FU per injection was 250 mg in 10 ml solution. Serum beta-hCG test became negative in 7 to 14 days after the treatment, and signs and symptoms disappeared. Salpingography were done in 8 cases after 2 to 3 months, and all the diseased tubes were found patient. There was little side effects due to this treatment, which is more effective, convenient and less traumatic than injecting 5-FU to the affected site through laparoscopy or systemic administration. It may turn out to be an effective, simple, safe and acceptable new method for treating early tubal pregnancy.

[Influence of electroacupuncture on ACh content and AChE activity in the spinal ganglia of rat].

The spinal ganglion a cell body storage of somatic primary-sensory neurons, is considered as an important region for neurochemical research of primary afferent nerves. The present experiment aims at the observation on the Ach content and its changes in the ganglia of 128 rats by means of biochemical methods under the effect of administration of Neostigmini and application of electroacupuncture. It is found that there are evidence of existence of Ach in the ganglia and when the AchE activity in the periphery nerve system is inhibited, the Ach content of ganglia rose. In addition, during acupuncture (applied at acupoint "Huantiao") analgesia, no apparent changes of Ach content can be visualized in spinal ganglia, however, the level of AchE activity goes up evidently. The foregoing results indicate that in the somatic primary-sensory neuron Ach is one of important neurotransmitters which may influence and take part in the transmission of sensory information through primary afferent nerves.

Studies on oriented and reversible immobilization of glycoprotein using novel boronate affinity gel.

The authors have previously synthesized a novel boronate affinity ligand, catechol [2-(diethylamino)carbonyl-4-bromomethyl]phenylboronate. When this ligand was coupled to cellulose beads, it bound horseradish peroxidase (HRP), a glycoprotein, at pH 7.0. In comparison, commercial m-aminophenylboronic acid-agarose did not bind HRP below pH 8.0. HRP was immobilized in an oriented and reversible fashion using this gel. The immobilized enzyme retained 90.12 per cent of its original activity, probably due to its attachment via the carbohydrate moiety of the enzyme. After repeated use, the activity remaining on the new gel was twice as high as that on conventional m-aminophenylboronic acid-agarose. The column was regenerated easily by washing with dilute acid because of reversibility of the boronate glycol bond.

Variability in three-dimensional measurements of back contour with raster stereography in normal subjects.

Forty normal children with a mean age of 9.1 years were investigated by using a Quantec Spinal Image System (QSIS). The QSIS uses computerized raster stereography technology to acquire three-dimensional measurements of back contour. Within a 95-percentile confidence interval (a) coronal-plane QSIS angles ranged from 0.05 to 2.36 degrees; (b) transverse-plane QSIS angles ranged from 0.03 to 1.96 degrees; and (c) sagittal-plane QSIS angles ranged from 36.8 to 44.8 degrees. Trunk-alignment deviation ranged from 3.51 to 7.45 mm within a 95-percentile confidence interval. An intraobserver standard deviation of +/-4.2 degrees was noted across all angular metrics. Normal ranges of QSIS-determined values for a population of 40 children without clinical evidence of pathology are reported.

Relationship between Quantec measurement and Cobb angle in patients with idiopathic scoliosis.

The Quantec Spinal Imaging System (QSIS) is a raster stereography used to measure three-dimensional trunk images. The Q angle, a coronal plane measurement generated by the Quantec Spinal Imaging System (QSIS), was compared with the Cobb angle in assessment of scoliosis curve magnitude. One hundred forty-nine patients with idiopathic scoliosis were evaluated using both the Quantec system and plane radiographs. The Cobb and Q angles demonstrated significant correlation in the thoracic region (r = 0.65, p < 0.05), lumbar region (r = 0.63, p < 0.05), and in the thoracolumbar region (r = 0.70, p < 0.05). The difference between the Q and Cobb angles was small when the Cobb angle was <21 degrees with less than 6 degrees of axial surface rotation, as measured by the QSIS method. For smaller curves with minimal rotation, there is close correlation between the Cobb angle and the Quantec angle.

Kinematic and kinetic asymmetry in patients with leg-length discrepancy.

The symmetry index (SI), as one of methods to evaluate gait pattern in patients with leg-length discrepancy (LLD), helps to estimate the acceptable range of inequality and to determine symmetry in the kinematic and kinetic data before and after a heel lift, although this parameter has a large standard deviation that undermines its accuracy. Thirty patients with LLD were studied by a motion-analysis system and a force plate. Joint motion of the lower extremity in the sagittal plane, back movement in the coronal plane, and three-dimensional ground-reaction forces (GRFs) were registered. From a linear-regression analysis, a mean value of inequality of 2.33 cm (range, 2.12-2.54) was found to correspond to an acceptable gait symmetry. After a heel lift, the SI of the pelvic tilt at midstance and of the vertical GRF at initial contact increases significantly, but the SI of the medial GRF at terminal stance decreases. Patients with an inequality of a mean value of 0.51 cm determined by palpating bilaterally the top of the iliac crest (the TIC1 subgroup) showed a lesser value of the SI of the center of pressure in the forward direction during stance compared with the group with a mean value of inequality of 1.39 cm (the TIC2 subgroup). As a result of our findings, we conclude that the effect of the amount of correction by a heel lift on gait symmetry is unpredictable.
