[Mn7O5(OR)2(O2CPh)9(terpy)] (R = Me, CH2Ph) complexes with a fused cubane/butterfly core and an S = 6 ground-state spin.

Two new heptanuclear Mn clusters, [Mn7O5(OMe)2(O2CPh)9(terpy)] (1) and [Mn7O5(OCH2Ph)2(O2CPh)9(terpy)] (2), were prepared from the partial alcoholysis of the trinuclear complex [Mn3O(O2CPh)6(py)2(H2O)] (3) in the presence of terpy (terpy = 2,2':6',2' '-terpyridine). Complexes 1 and 2 crystallize in the triclinic P and the orthorhombic Pbca space groups, respectively. The clusters are both mixed valent, containing three Mn oxidation states: MnIV, 5MnIII, and MnII. The Mn ions are held together by nine doubly bridging benzoates, four mu3-O2- ions, one mu5-O2- ion, and either two mu-MeO- (1) or two mu-PhCH2O- (2) groups. The single terpy chelate in each complex is attached to the MnII ion. The core topology is novel and very unusual, comprising a cubane and a butterfly unit fused by sharing a MnIII and the mu5-O2- ion. Solid-state dc and ac magnetic susceptibility studies establish that complexes 1 and 2 both possess an S = 6 ground-state spin. Fits of variable-temperature and -field magnetization data gave S = 6, g = 1.88, and D = -0.21 cm-1 for 1 and S = 6, g = 1.86, and D = -0.18 cm-1 for 2. Single-crystal magnetization vs dc field scans down to 0.1 K for 2 show only very little hysteresis at 0.1 K.

Studies of an Fe9 tridiminished icosahedron.

The synthesis and structural characterization of a nonanuclear FeIII cage complex is reported. The nine iron centers in [Fe9(mu3-O)4(O3PPh)3(O2CCMe3)13] lie on the vertices of an incomplete icosahedron, with the P atoms of triphenylphosphonate at the other three vertices. The paramagnetic core therefore describes a tridiminished icosahedron. Magnetic studies suggest an S=1/2 ground state for the molecule. Analysis of exchange paths and the susceptibility data point to the interpretation that the cluster can be divided into two nearly decoupled sections: an {Fe6O3} section, with an S=0 ground state, in which three oxo-centered triangles bound a central triangle that is not oxo-centered; and an {Fe3O} triangle with S=1/2. The analysis of the susceptibility data leads to a Heisenberg model based on three significant antiferromagnetic exchange interactions, with values of 173.7 cm-1 in the {Fe3O} triangle, and 30.9 and 19.1 cm-1 within the {Fe6O3} section, while the exchange between them is <1 cm-1. With these assignments, the theoretical low-temperature differential susceptibility is also in very good agreement with measurements up to 50 T. Magnetic measurements in the milli-kelvin range reveal striking hysteresis loops and magnetization reversals associated with a Landau-Zener-Stückelberg (LZS) transition as enhanced by the occurrence of a phonon bottleneck.

A Heterotetranuclear [NiIIReIV3] single-molecule magnet.

The reaction of [ReIVCl4(ox)]2- and fully solvated Ni2+ ions in a MeCN/i-PrOH mixture affords the heterotetranuclear complex (NBu4)4[Ni{ReCl4(ox)}3] where the rhenium precursor acts as a bidentate ligand toward the nicke(II) ion through the oxalate group. The mixed 3d-5d species exhibits intramolecular ferromagnetic coupling and it behaves like a single-molecule magnet.

Single-chain magnet behavior in an alternated one-dimensional assembly of a Mn(III) Schiff-base complex and a TCNQ radical.

An alternated 1:1 chain compound of a Mn(III) salen derivative and the TCNQ monoradical was synthesized: [Mn(5-TMAMsaltmen)(TCNQ)](ClO(4))(2) (1) (TCNQ=tetracyano-p-quinodimethane; 5-TMAMsaltmen=N,N'-(1,1,2,2-tetramethylethylene) bis(5-trimethylammoniomethylsalicylideneiminato)). Compound 1 has a zigzag chain structure packed with adjacent chains with an interchain MnMn distance of over 8 Angatrom. As compound 1 contains no crystallization solvent, the void spaces between chains are occupied only by ClO(4) (-) counter ions. Compound 1 has a structure reminiscent of what has been observed in the family of Mn(III)(porphyrin)-TCNE or -TCNQ compounds reported previously by Miller and co-workers and we demonstrate herein its unique single-chain magnet behavior among this family of compounds. The direct current (dc) magnetic measurements established the one-dimensional nature of compound 1 with an antiferromagnetic exchange coupling, J/k(B) approximately -96 K, between the Mn(III) ion and TCNQ radical and with an activated correlation length (Delta(xi)=26.5 K) at low temperatures (50-15 K). The slow relaxation of the magnetization was shown in compound 1 by the field hysteresis of the magnetization observed below 3.5 K (with a coercive field up to 14 kOe at 1.8 K). Single-crystal magnetization measurements demonstrated the uniaxial symmetry of this compound and allowed an estimation of the anisotropy field, H(a) approximately 97 kOe. The absence of magnetic ordered phase or spin-glass behavior was established by heat-capacity calorimetry measurements that exhibit no abnormality of C(p) between 0.5 K and 10 K. The study of the magnetization relaxation by combined ac (alternating current) and dc techniques showed that compound 1 possesses a single relaxation time (tau). As the consequence of the finite size of the chain, the temperature dependence of tau presents two activated regimes above and below 4.5 K with tau(01)=2.1 x 10(-10) s, Delta(tau1)=94.1 K and tau(02)=6.8 x 10(-8) s and Delta(tau2)=67.7 K, respectively. The detailed analysis of these dynamics properties together with the correlation length, allows an unambiguous demonstration of the single-chain magnet behavior in 1.

A family of [Mn6] complexes featuring tripodal ligands.

The synthesis and magnetic properties of four new Mn complexes containing tripodal alcohol ligands are reported: [Mn6(OAc)6(H2tea)2(tmp)2].2MeCN (1.2MeCN), [Mn6(acac)4(OAc)2(Htmp)2(H2N-ep)2] (2), [Mn6(OAc)8(tmp)2(py)4].2py (3.2py), and [Mn6(OAc)8(thme)2(py)4].2py (4.2py) [H3tea, triethanolamine; H3tmp, 1,1,1-tris(hydroxymethyl)propane; H2N-H2ep, 2-amino-2-ethyl-1,3-propanediol; H3thme, 1,1,1-tris(hydroxymethyl)ethane]. All complexes are mixed-valent with a [Mn(III)2Mn(II)4] oxidation assignment and are constructed from four edge-sharing triangles but differ slightly in that complexes 1 and 2 display a [Mn(III)2Mn(II)4(mu2-OR)6(mu3-OR)4]4+ core, while complexes 3 and 4 feature [Mn(III)2Mn(II)4(mu2-OR)2(mu3-OR)4]8+ and [Mn(III)2Mn(II)4(mu2-OR)4(mu3-OR)4]6+ cores, respectively. dc and ac magnetic susceptibility studies in the 2-300 K range for complexes 1-4 reveal the presence of dominant antiferromagnetic exchange interactions, leading to ground states of S = 0 for 1 and 2, while complexes 3 and 4 display S = 4 ground states with D = -0.44 and -0.58 cm(-1), respectively. Single-molecule magnetism behavior was confirmed for 3 and 4 by the presence of sweep-rate and temperature-dependent hysteresis loops in single-crystal M vs H studies at temperatures down to 40 mK. Theoretical density functional calculations were used to evaluate the individual pairwise exchange interactions present, confirming the diamagnetic ground states for 1 and 2 and the S = 4 ground states for 3 and 4.
