Experiments indicated that cerium(IV) ion which could not emit fluorescence was deoxidized by ascorbic acid to cerium(III) ion which could emit its characteristic fluorescence in water solution, while sodium hexametaphosphate added could greatly enhance the fluorescence intensity of the system. From this, an indirect sensitive method for determining ascorbic acid was developed. The fluorescence intensity of the system was measured in a 1 cm quartz cell with the excitation and emission wavelengths of 303 and 340 nm, respectively. The results showed that the fluorescence intensity of the system presented a linear relationship with the concentration of ascorbic acid in the range of 1.0 x 10(-7)-8.0 x 10(-6) mol x L(-1), the correlation coefficient r was 0.9997, and the detection limit (S/N = 3) was 1.6 x 10(-8) mol x L(-1). The presented method was used to determine ascorbic acid sample and vitamin C tablet, and the results were satisfactory.
OBJECTIVE: To study lymph node involvement and micro-metastasis of rectal cancer with large slice technique and tissue microarray. METHODS: Large slice technique, combined with tissue microarray, was used in pathologic study of 31 patients after total mesorectal excision (TME) for rectal cancer. RESULTS: Nine hundred and ninety- two lymph nodes were harvested and 148 were positive. More than 40% of positive lymph nodes were located in the outer layer of the mesorectum and in the same side of the mesorectum as the primary tumor was. Circumferential margin involvement was observed in 12 cases and correlated with the numbers of metastatic lymph nodes (Beta =1.166, P=0.041). Micrometastasis was found in 9 cases with negative pathological lymph nodes, but not correlated with tumor differentiation and stage (P> 0.05). CONCLUSION: Large slice technique combined with tissue microarray facilitates the detection of lymph node involvement and micrometastasis. There is a predominance of lymph node metastasis in the outer layer and the same side of the mesorectum. Micrometastasis can be discovered in different stages of rectal cancer.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinicopathologic features of small intestinal hemangioma and vascular malformation. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on 51 cases of hemangioma and vascular malformation involving the duodenum, jejunum and ileum in the past 30 years. RESULTS: The patient's age ranged from 1.4 to 75.0 years, with an average/median age of 40 years for the 51 cases. The ratio of male and female was almost equal. In most cases, the lesions were located in the ileum (18 cases) and jejunum (16 cases) accounting for 66.7%. The predominant symptoms and signs were either intestinal hemorrhage or obstruction. Grossly, the lesions appeared as polyp-like, ulcerative, varices, solitary mass, diffuse infiltration or in an occult status. Histologically, arteriovenous hemangioma also called arteriovenous malformation was more common seen accounting for 86.3%. Other less common vascular lesions included cavernous hemangioma, capillary hemangioma, Rendu-Osler-Weber syndrome and Dieulafoy disease. CONCLUSIONS: Histologic classification and denomination for hemangioma and vascular malformation of small intestine are still controversial. It is very important to correlate clinical manifestations with arteriography findings in histologic diagnosis of hemanigoma and vascular malformation of the small intestine.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the expression of B cell-specific activator protein (BSAP)/Pax-5 in lymphomas. METHODS: One hundred and two cases of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), 3 cases of follicular lymphoma (FL), 3 cases of extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma, 1 case of nodular lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin lymphoma (NLPHL), 10 cases of anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) and 10 cases of plasmacytoma were studied immunohistochemically for BSAP and CD20. RESULTS: The tumor cells in the 102 cases of DLBCL all expressed CD20, amongst which 100 cases also expressed BSAP. Three cases of FL, 3 cases of extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma and 1 case of NLPHL also expressed BSAP and CD20. All the ALCLs and plasmacytomas did not express BSAP and CD20. The expression rates of CD20 and BSAP were highly consistent. The intensity of staining showed no statistical significance. CONCLUSIONS: BSAP/Pax-5 is a novel B-cell marker expressed in tumor nuclei of B-cell lymphomas. Though less sensitive than CD20, anti-BSAP has diagnostic value in routine surgical pathology practice.

The effect of beta-cyclodextrins (beta-CDs) on the enzymatical hydrolysis of chiral dichlorprop methyl ester (DCPPM) was studied. Four kinds of beta-cyclodextrins (beta-cyclodextrin, Partly methylated-CD (PM-beta-CD), hydroxypropyl-cyclodextrin (HP-beta-CD) and carboxymethyl-cyclodextrin (CM-beta-CD)) were used. Compared with 100% DCPPM in the absence of betacyclodextrins, the activity of lipase decreased with the increase of Pbetacyclodextrin and PM-Pbetacyclodextrin. However, CM-beta-clodextrin stimulated the lipase activity. The inhibition effect of Pbeta cyclodextrin and PM-5betacyclodextrin on the hydrolysis of DCPPM is affected by many factors other than degree of the methylation blocking the active site of lipase. UV-Vis and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy studies of the complexation of aqueous DCPPM with beta-CDs provide fresh insight into the molecular structure of the complex and explain the effects of beta-CDs on enzymatical hydrolysis of chiral DCPPM. Data showed that inclusion complexes had formed by complexation of the CM-beta-CD with DCPPM and the solubility of DCPPM was increased in water, which lead to the increased lipase activity.
Reactive Red 195, which is an azoic anionic dye characterized by the presence of five sulfonic groups and one azoic group, is efficiently removed using chitosan. The increasing chitosan dose had a dramatic positive impact on the achieved color removal, there was approximately a linear relationship between chitosan dose and color removal of dye before color removal reach maximum. Also, the increase of dye concentration led to the increase of chitosan dosage in order to get the same color removal. 92 mg/L of chitosan dosage was sufficient to achieve complete remove of dye at initial concentration of dye at 200 mg/L. For the higher concentrations of dye, high dosages were necessary to reach complete color removal. On the other hand, the use of adsorption interferents (Fe2+, Na+, HCO3- and others) can be interesting, addition of ions had effect on the color removal of Reactive Red 195. Comparing with blank, addition of chemical species approximately decreased the color removal except Na+ and combination of Fe2+ + HCO3-. However, comparing with Fe2+ alone and HCO3- alone, combination of Fe2+ + HCO3- increased the color removal.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the significance of bcl-10 protein expression in extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. METHODS: Sixty-two cases of MALT lymphoma were reviewed and immunohistochemical studies for bcl-10 and Ki-67 were performed. RESULTS: Sixty out of the 62 cases studied (96.8%) were positive for bcl-10. Thirty-three (53.2%) showed bcl-10 expression in both the nuclei and cytoplasm, while 27 cases (43.6%) showed only cytoplasmic staining. The 10 cases with Hashimoto's thyroiditis demonstrated bcl-10 expression in the cytoplasm. The mean age of patients with bcl-10 nuclear expression (51.4 years old) was 5.2 years younger than those (56.6 years) without bcl-10 nuclear expression. The former category also showed a male predilection (male to female ratio = 19:14, in contrast to 10:19 in the latter category). The frequency of bcl-10 nuclear expression was lower in cases from thyroid but higher in cases from lung, stomach and intestine (P < 0.05). There was no statistically significant correlation between bcl-10 nuclear expression and clinical tumor stage (P > 0.05) or tumor cell morphology (P > 0.05). Amongst the 40 cases of gastrointestinal MALT lymphoma, bcl-10 nuclear expression correlated with extent of tumor involvement. The protein was expressed in 36.4% (4 out of 11 cases) of MALT lymphoma confined to mucosa or submucosa, 65.2% (15 out of 23 cases) of those invading down to muscularis propria or subserosa, and 100% (all 6 cases) of those extending beyond serosa (P < 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in Ki-67 proliferative index between bcl-10-positive and bcl-10-negative groups (P < 0.05). Follow-up data were available in 52 patients (83.9%) and the five-year survival rate was no statistically significant difference in survival between bcl-10-positive (29 patients, 96.3%) and bcl-10-negative groups (23 patients, 66.4%, P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Two expression patterns of bcl-10 protein were observed in MALT lymphoma: mixed nuclear-cytoplasmic and cytoplasmic only. The bcl-10 nuclear expression appears more important and correlates with anatomic site of tumor and extent of tumor involvement. Immunohistochemical detection of bcl-10 may carry some diagnostic and prognostic implications in assessment of MALT lymphoma.

Rapid degradation of bensulfuron-methyl upon repeated application in paddy soils was studied. The results showed that the DT50 of bensulfuron-methyl was reduced from 16 d to 9 d in soil with one-year bensulfuron-methyl application. Rapid bensulfuron-methyl degradation was happened to previously untreated soil by addition 5% rapid bensulfuron-methyl adapted soil and was inhibited following pre-treatment with broad-spectrum antibiotic chloramphenicol. In bensulfuron-methyl adapted soil mineralisation of 14C labeled bensulfuronmethyl to 14CO2 occurred at a faster rate than with previously untreated soil. It was concluded that rapid bensulfuron-methyl degradation upon repeated application is probably linked to the adaptation of soil bacteria which can utilize bensulfuron-methyl as a source of carbon and energy.
Mixed hydroxy-Al-Fe pillared montmorillonites with large basal spacing were successfully prepared through cation-exchanging of Na+ - montmorillonite with mixed hydroxy-Al and hydroxy-Fe pillaring solutions made from hydrolysis of corresponding metal salts, followed by calcination to convert hydroxy-Al and hydroxy-Fe into intercalated polycations. According to XRD analysis, the basal spacing d(001) of pillared products dramatically enlarged from 12.7 A in the Na-montmorillonite to 81 A in the hydroxy-Fe -montmorillonite and 77.5 A in mixed hydroxy-Al-Fe-montmorillonite. The N2 BET surface areas of the pillared montmorillonites also greatly increased to more than 200 m2/g as compared to about 27 m2/g for the Na-montmorillonite. IR analysis of hydroxy-Fe, and mixed hydroxy-Al-Fe pillared montmorillonites revealed a new absorption vibration at 1384 cm(-1) wavelength. XRF elemental analysis data also showed a high content of Fe2O3 in the hydroxy-Fe pillared montmorillonite.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the expression of API2-MALT1 fusion gene mRNA and its effect on protein of API2, Caspase3 and Ki67 in gastrointestinal MALT lymphoma (Extranodal marginal zone B cell lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue). METHODS: The mRNA of API2-MALT1 fusion transcript was assayed in 33 archival cases of gastrointestinal MALT lymphoma by RT-PCR and nested PCR. According to the expression of API2-MALT1 mRNA or not, 33 cases of MALT lymphoma were divided into two groups. Ki67, API2 and Caspase3 were detected by immunohistochemical technique and analyzed by the microsoft Image-Pro plus. RESULTS: API2-MALT1 fusion gene mRNA was found in 16 of specimens with gastrointestinal MALT lymphoma. The expression rate was 48.4%. The average area (21177.30 +/- 6171.72) micron 2 and single cell average area (29.81 +/- 7.40) micron 2 of API2 were decreased in the group with the expression of API2-MALT1 mRNA, compared with those in the group without the expression of API2-MALT1 mRNA [(34325.65 +/- 6577.00) micron 2, (37.84 +/- 8.55) micron 2]. The integrated optical density(IOD) of API2 showed no significant difference between the two groups, neither did the expression of Ki67 and Caspase3. CONCLUSION: The expression of API2-MALT1 is related to the down-regulated expression of protein of API2, its effect on apoptosis of MALT lymphoma remains to be detected further. The expression of API2-MALT1 mRNA is unrelated to the cellular proliferation.
AIM: To investigate the effects of copper-aspirin complex on rat thrombosis and the interaction between platelets and neutrophils. METHODS: The model of electrically stimulated carotid artery thrombosis in Sprague Dawley rats was used; the effects of copper-aspirin complex on rat platelet-neutrophil adhesion and platelet aggregation stimulated by activated neutrophils were observed by rosette assay and Born's method, respectively. RESULTS: Intragastric copper-aspirin complex (5, 7, and 10 mg/kg) dose-dependently prolonged the occlusion time; it significantly decreased the rosette number formed between thrombin-activated platelets and neutrophils; the 50 % of inhibitory concentration (IC50) was (54.6+/-4.3) micromol/L. Copper-aspirin complex markedly inhibited rat platelet aggregation induced by either cell free supernatant of activated neutrophils or by activated neutrophil suspension. The values of IC50 were (224.5+/-16.2) micromol/L and (820.5+/-21.4) micromol/L, whereas aspirin had no influence. CONCLUSION: Copper-aspirin complex inhibited platelet-neutrophil interactions through a different property from aspirin and resulted in a more potent antithrombotic activity.
The main effects of pollutions including acid rain, Cu2+, atrazine and their combined products on the activities of urease, invertin, acid phosphatase and catalase were studied by means of orthogonal test. The results showed that H+ and Cu2+ had significant influence on the activities of four enzymes and the ability of their inhibiting followed the order: H+ > Cu2+. Al3+ and atrazine only had litter effects on the activity of urease and phosphatase, respectively. Furthermore, interaction analysis revealed that Cu2+ -H+ affected on the activity of acid phosphatase significantly and antagonism on invertin and urease, Cu2+ -atrazine only exhibited the synergism on the activity of acid phosphatase. But atrazine-H+ had non-interaction within the investigated concentration range. Among four enzymes, acid phosphatase was the most sensitive one to the contaminations.
