Nasal nitric oxide in children: a novel measurement technique and normal values.

OBJECTIVES: To develop and standardize a technique for measuring nasal nitric oxide (NO) output in children and to determine normal values in this population. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study evaluating a new technique for measuring nasal nitric oxide in a cohort of normal patients and a cohort of patients with nasal disease. METHODS: Nasal NO was measured using an aspiration technique, aspirating room air through the nasal cavities by means of a Teflon nozzle placed in one nasal vestibule while maintaining velopharyngeal closure using a party "blow-out" toyRESULTS Nasal NO measurements were performed in 45 children (mean age, 11.0 y; age range, 3.2-17.6 y) There were 20 girls and 25 boys. All children were able to perform the maneuvers necessary for measurement of nasal NO output. Among the subgroup of normal healthy children (30), there was considerable variation in NO output between subjects, with a mean NO output of 481 nL/min and an SD of 283 nL/min. CONCLUSIONS: Nasal NO can be readily measured in children using the presented technique. There is considerable variability in the values for nasal NO output in normal children.

Comparison of analog and digital Fourier transforms in medical image analysis.

The effectiveness and limitations of medical image processing using analog and digital methods are studied. Several types of errors introduced during the image processing are analyzed. For the analog optical Fourier transform, errors are introduced by the vignetting effect and lens aberration. For the digital Fourier transform, errors are introduced by the aliasing effect and the band limit. To compare the results obtained by the two techniques, a set of x-ray images was processed both optically and digitally. The former was achieved by an optical system containing a large Fourier telephoto lens and the latter by a personal computer using a Fourier transform algorithm. The veracity of both the optical and digital Fourier spectra is analyzed. Our results indicate that the optical method has high speed due to parallel processing. High veracity can be achieved in high frequency regions by using an optimal optical system. In comparison, the digital method has the advantages of high processing precision and programmability, but has low processing speed. The comparison of the two different techniques presented in this article can provide a basis for selection of the processing method in different clinical settings. Even with today's fast computers, the optical method is still suitable for many clinical applications. The best choice lies in an analog-digital combination.

[The relationship between tumor necrosis factor A-308 gene polymorphism and susceptibility of severe periodontitis in adults].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between tumor necrosis factor A-308 gene polymorphism and susceptibility of severe periodontitis in adults. METHODS: Buccal swabs from 65 adult patients with severe periodontitis and 96 periodontal healthy adult controls were obtained. DNA was extracted from each sample using Chelex-100 method, then PCR-RFLP was performed to determine the TNFA-308 genotype. Data were analyzed by statistics software. RESULTS: A significant difference of genotype distribution was found between the patients and controls. The percentage of 1/1 type of the patients was much higher (P < 0.001). Risk Analysis showed odds ratio for allele 1 was 4.64. CONCLUSION: This study suggested that TNFA-308 allele 1 maybe a marker of susceptibility to severe periodontitis.

Spatial distribution of PAHs in a contaminated valley in Southeast China.

A survey was conducted on the accumulation and spatial distribution of PAHs in surface soils under different land use patterns in a valley in the Yangtze Delta region with an area of 10 km(2) containing 15 small copper- and zinc-smelting furnaces. Sixty-five topsoil (0-20 cm) samples were collected and 16 PAHs were determined. The average amount of all the 16 PAHs ranged from 0 to 530 microg kg(-1) (oven dry basis), with a mean concentration of 33.2 microg kg(-1). Benzo[a]pyrene and indeno[1, 2, 3, -cd]pyrene were the two main PAHs present at high concentrations, while pyrene and fluorene had very low concentrations. PAH concentrations were higher in uncultivated than in cultivated soils, and areas of woods and shrubbery had the lowest soil PAH contents. The average PAH-homologue concentrations ranked as follows: 5-rings >> 3-rings, 4-rings > 6-rings >2-rings. Much higher concentrations of PAHs were found in the southern part of the sampling area, perhaps due to deposition of airborne particles by the southeasterly winds in winter and spring. We conclude that the small smelting furnaces were the dominant source of PAHs that accumulated in the soils and the southeasterly winds led to the spatial distribution of PAHs in the topsoils. Land vegetation cover and soil utilization patterns also affected the accumulation and distribution of soil PAHs.

Phenanthrene adsorption by soils treated with humic substances under different pH and temperature conditions.

The mobility of phenanthrene (PHE) in soils depends on its sorption and is influenced by either the existing soil humus or exogenous humic substances. Exogenous humic acids (HAs) were added to soil to enhance the amount of soil organic carbon (SOC) by 2.5, 5.0, and 10.0 g kg(-1). PHE desorption of the treated soils was determined at two pH levels (3.0 and 6.0) and temperatures (15 and 25 degrees C). Soil PHE adsorption was related to pH and the type and quantity of added HAs. Humic acid (HA) and fulvic acid (FA) derived from peat had different effects on adsorption of PHE. Adsorption increased at first and then decreased with increasing quantity of exogenous FA. When the soil solution pH (in 0.005 M CaCl(2)) was 4.5 or 3.0, the turning points were 2.5 g FA kg(-1) at pH 3.0 and 5 g FA kg(-1) at pH 4.5. When soil solution pH was 6, the amount of adsorbed PHE was enhanced with increasing exogenous HAs (HA or FA) and amount of adsorption by soil treated with FA was higher than with HA. Adsorption of PHE in the FA treatment at 10.0 g kg(-1) was lower than the controls (untreated soil or treatment with HAs at 0 g kg(-1)) when the soil solution pH was 3.0. This suggests that FA adsorbed by soil was desorbed at low pH and would then increase PHE solubility, and PHE then combined with FA. PHE adsorption was usually higher under lower pH and/or lower temperature conditions. PHE sorption fitted the Freundlich isotherm, indicating that exogenous humic substances influenced adsorption of phenanthrene, which in turn was affected by environmental conditions such as pH and temperature. Thus, exogenous humic substances can be used to control the mobility of soil PAHs under appropriate conditions to decrease PAH contamination.

An improved method of region grouping for microcalcification detection in digital mammograms.

A very important issue, namely region grouping, in computer-assisted diagnostic detection of microcalcification clusters (MCC) in digital mammograms is addressed in this work. In the diagnosis of breast cancer, MCC, instead of single and isolated microcalcifications, are considered clinically significant. Grouping individual regions segmented from digital mammograms, therefore, should be a component in an automatic MCC detection system. Actually this component may concern several system modules, such as segmentation, feature extraction, performance estimation aiming at both algorithm optimization and consistent evaluation and ultimately computerized malignancy estimation of calcified lesions. The previous work in the literature used a kernel-based method for region grouping. We proposed a distance-based and dense-to-sparse grouping method. The grouping result should be independent of the size, shape and orientation of real clusters. The application, namely cluster-oriented analysis including an adaptive segmentation method and cluster level feature extraction scheme, is discussed. A preliminary study was performed on a set of 30 full mammograms at 60 microm resolution, containing 40 MCC. The introduction of the cluster level feature extraction and a simple rule-based method reduces false positives from 7.1 to 2.4 per image at the sensitivity of 92.5%. This grouping method provides a solid basis for effective feature extraction-analysis and candidate cluster classification.
