[A clinical observation on variation of crossed disparity and uncrossed disparity in intermittent exotropia].

OBJECTIVE: To understand the clinical variety of crossed disparity and uncrossed disparity in intermittent exotropia. METHODS: Zero disparity stereo-acuity, crossed disparity and uncrossed disparity stereo-acuity of 55 cases with intermittent exotropia were examined with stereogram designed by Yan Shaoming before surgery. RESULTS: In group 1 consisting of 25 cases, the zero disparity stereo-acuity of normal persons was 48%, the values of crossed disparity and uncrossed disparity stereoacuity were not in the normal range, and the crossed disparity was larger than the uncrossed disparity stereo-acuity (t = 843.5, P < 0.000 1). In group 2 including 26 cases, the zero disparity stereo-acuity of normal person was 30.8%, the value of crossed disparity was abnormal, and the uncrossed disparity was not found. In group 3 consisting of 4 cases, only the abnormal zero disparity stereo-acuity was found. In the 55 cases, there was no coexistence of zero disparity and uncrossed disparity, no existence of only crossed disparity or only uncrossed disparity, and no coexistence of crossed and uncrossed disparity. CONCLUSIONS: (1) In the cases with intermittent exotropia, the zero disparity stereoacuity, the crossed disparity and uncrossed disparity stereoacuities are abnormal. (2) The sequential damage of stereopsis in intermittent exotropia is uncrossed disparity, crossed disparity and zero disparity. (3) It is proved in the clinic that the binocular temporal retinae correspond to the crossed disparity and the binocular nasal retinae correspond to the uncrossed disparity.

[Study on the intra- and extra-hepatocyte distribution of sodium ions in scalded rats during early postburn stage].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the characteristics of the intra- and extra-hepatocyte sodium ions distribution in scalded rats during early postburn stage, with the aim of improving burn shock resuscitation regime and the resuscitation effects. METHODS: Adult Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into sham scalding (C, n = 12) and scalding (S, n = 7) groups. The rats in S group were subjected to 40% TBSA III degree scalding on the back and were catheterized via jugular vein for fluid resuscitation. The rats in C group were catheterized via jugular vein without fluid infusion and were sham scalded by warm water in temperature of 37 degrees. The changes in the intra- and extra-hepatocyte sodium ion contents were determined in vivo by (23)Na-magnetic resonance spectrum technology, while the existing state of the intra- and extra-hepatocyte sodium ion was determined by detecting (23)Na-magnetic resonance horizontal delaying time (T(2)). RESULTS: The extra-hepatocyte sodium content in S group at 24 postburn hours (PBHs) was 17% less than that in C group. In addition, the T(2f) (fast T(2)) in S group remained stable but maintained a higher ratio during the observation time. This suggested that the sodium binding sites in extra-hepatocyte matrix increased relatively and that intra-hepatocyte sodium content increased by 57%. But the T(2) and the fast and slow parts of the T(2) kept stable, which implied that intra-hepatocyte catabolizing products were increased. This led to an increase in the sodium ion binding sites within intra-hepatocyte matrix in proportion to the sodium ion content. CONCLUSION: During early postburn stage, the extra-hepatocyte sodium in a remote organ such as the liver exhibited relative deficiency due to its ingress into hepatocyte cytoplasm and to the increase of sodium combining sites.

[Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy study on the protein secondary structure of photosystem II reaction center].

A successful study on the secondary structure of the isolated photosystem II (PSII) particles with the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy is reported in this paper. The beta condensation effect is obviously characterized by infrared absorption spectra. The infrared spectra of both living protein and beta condensed protein samples are measured at room temperature. The amide I band in infrared spectrum is used to perform the quantitative analysis of the sample properties. The recorded spectra show the irreversible effect for the PSII particles after the 400 K heating. A rather strong change of the infrared spectra is observed due to the beta condensation of PSII protein. All the spectra are well fitted by 3-Lorentz-peak. The FTIR spectroscopy shows its effectiveness in studying the heating effect on the PSII particles.

Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization for hepatocellular carcinoma in patients with cirrhosis: evaluation of two kinds of dosages of anticancer drugs and analysis of prognostic factors.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To evaluate the efficacy of TACE (transcatheter arterial chemoembolization) with use of low-dose versus conventional-dose anticancer drugs in hepatocellular carcinoma patients with cirrhosis and to analyze their prognostic factors. METHODOLOGY: Eight-two patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma underwent super-selective TACE. Patients in group A (n = 40) received low-dose anticancer drugs. Patients in group B (n = 42) were given conventional-dose of anticancer drugs. Tumor response and survival time in the two groups were compared. Cox proportion-hazards modeling was used to evaluate the relative importance of prognostic variables. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between the two groups in initial tumor response (P < 0.05). The median survival in all patients was 18 months (mo). The median survival in groups A and B were 20 mo and 16 mo respectively. The cumulative survival rates at 6, 12, 18, 24, 30 mo were 68.4%, 57.6%, 38.4%, 26.6%, 19.9% in group A, and 62.6%, 43.8%, 31.9%, 26.5%, 26.5% in group B. There was no significant difference in survival between the two groups (P > 0.05). The factors influencing prognosis were Child-Pugh scores (P < 0.0001), tumor thrombus in the portal vein (P < 0.0001), tumor size (P < 0.0001), method of embolization (P < 0.0001), TACE times (P < 0.001). The dosage of anticancer drugs employed in TACE was not relevant to the survival rates (P = 0.883). CONCLUSIONS: TACE with use of large-dose anticancer drugs does not significantly enhance the anticancer effects and survival compared that with lowdose anticancer drugs. The therapeutic effect of TACE was mainly attributed to embolization of the artery rather than to anticancer drugs.
