Brain renin-angiotensin system and sympathetic hyperactivity in rats after myocardial infarction.

Blockade of brain "ouabain" prevents the sympathetic hyperactivity and impairment of baroreflex function in rats with congestive heart failure (CHF). Because brain "ouabain" may act by activating the brain renin-angiotensin system (RAS), the aim of the present study was to assess whether chronic treatment with the AT1-receptor blocker losartan given centrally normalizes the sympathetic hyperactivity and impairment of baroreflex function in Wistar rats with CHF postmyocardial infarction (MI). After left coronary artery ligation (2 or 6 wk), rats received either intracerebroventricular losartan (1 mg. kg-1. day-1, CHF-Los) or vehicle (CHF-Veh) by osmotic minipumps. To assess possible peripheral effects of intracerebroventricular losartan, one set of CHF rats received the same rate of losartan subcutaneously. Sham-operated rats served as control. After 2 wk of treatment, mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), and renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) at rest and in response to air-jet stress and intracerebroventricular injection of the alpha2-adrenoceptor-agonist guanabenz were measured in conscious animals. Arterial baroreflex function was evaluated by ramp changes in MAP. Compared with sham groups, CHF-Veh groups showed impaired arterial baroreflex control of HR and RSNA, increased sympathoexcitatory and pressor responses to air-jet stress, and increased sympathoinhibitory and hypotensive responses to guanabenz. The latter is consistent with decreased activity in sympathoinhibitory pathways. Chronic intracerebroventricular infusion of losartan largely normalized these abnormalities. In CHF rats, the same rate of infusion of losartan subcutaneously was ineffective. In sham-operated rats, losartan intracerebroventricularly or subcutaneously did not affect sympathetic activity. We conclude that the chronic increase in sympathoexcitation, decrease in sympathoinhibition, and desensitized baroreflex function in CHF all appear to depend on the brain RAS, since this whole pattern of changes can be normalized by chronic central AT1-receptor blockade with losartan.

ERK pathway mediates the activation of Cdk2 in IGF-1-induced proliferation of human osteosarcoma MG-63 cells.

Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) is a potent mitogen for osteoblasts. The primary signaling mechanism involved in mediating this proliferative effect of IGF-1 is not well defined. The roles of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1 (ERK1) and cyclin-dependent kinase 2 (Cdk2) kinases in the IGF-1-induced proliferative signaling pathway of human osteosarcoma MG63 cells were investigated using a selective inhibitor of MEK, PD98059, and a Cdk inhibitor, olomoucine. Treatment of MG63 cells with PD98059 and olomoucine inhibited IGF-1-stimulated proliferation of these cells and induced cell cycle arrest at G0/G1. PD98059 significantly abolished IGF-1-stimulated kinase activity of ERK1 in a dose-dependent manner. PD98059 also inhibited the kinase activity of Cdk2 in IGF-1 stimulated cells, although the inhibition by olomoucine was much greater. The extent of inhibition of Cdk2 activity by PD98059 and olomoucine was consistent with their effects on cell proliferation and cell cycle. Cyclin A was complexed with Cdk2 in unstimulated MG63 cells, but Cdk2 kinase activity in the complex was up-regulated only in IGF-1-treated cells. This was consistent with an observed IGF-1-stimulated hyperphosphorylation of retinoblastoma protein (pRb) with the possibility that the activated Cdk2 kinase is involved in phosphorylation of pRb in IGF-1-induced cell proliferation. Taken together, these results suggest that the MEK/ERK pathway act in a positive regulatory fashion to activate Cdk2 in IGF-1-induced mitogenesis in osteoblasts.

Molecular analysis and heterologous expression of the gene encoding methylmalonyl-coenzyme A mutase from rifamycin SV-producing strain Amycolatopsis mediterranei U32.

The conversion of succinyl-coenzyme A (CoA) into methylmalonyl-CoA, catalyzed by adenosylcobalamin-dependent methylmalonyl-CoA mutase (MCM), represents an important source of building blocks for rifamycin SV biosynthesis. The structural gene for MCM from rifamycin SV-producing strain Amycolatopsis mediterranei U32 was isolated by using a heterologous gene probe encoding the MCM of Streptomyces cinnamonesis. A 7.8-kbp fragment was sequenced and four complete open reading frames (ORFs) and two incomplete ORFs were found. Two central ORFs, ORF3 and ORF4, overlap by four nucleotides and were found to encode MCM small (602 residues) and large (721 residues) subunits, respectively. Comparison showed that the MCM gene of A. mediterranei U32 was quite similar to those from other sources. The functionally unknown ORF5, immediately downstream of the mutAB gene, was quite similar to the ORFs downstream of mutAB from S. cinnamonensis and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Such a striking cross-species conservation of gene order suggested that ORF5 could also be involved in the metabolism of methylmalonyl-CoA. MCM gene was overexpressed in Escherichia coli under T7 promoter, and MCM activity could be detected in the recombinant E. coli clone harboring MCM gene after the addition of coenzyme B12. A purification procedure based on the B12 affinity column was established to purify the MCM from E. coli. The molecular weight of purified MCM from E. coli was determined by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, which corresponds to that calculated from the MCM protein sequence and is also the same size as that of the enzyme purified directly from A. mediterranei U32. MCM gene was overexpressed in polyketide monensin producing S. cinnamonensis, and the total monensin production was increased by 32%.

The study of maternal and fetal plasma catecholamines levels during pregnancy and delivery.

BACKGROUND: To study maternal and fetal plasma levels of catecholamines (CA) during pregnancy and delivery, especially changes in CA levels during fetal distress and conditions of different modes of delivery. METHODS: Maternal and fetal plasma NE, E and DA levels were determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for 16 non-pregnant women, 19 cases of early pregnancy, 17 cases of mid pregnancy, late pregnancy, spontaneous vaginal delivery and 53 cases of cesarean section. RESULTS: Plasma NE and DA levels decreased gradually with the advance of gestational weeks, and levels of plasma NE were significantly lower than those of non-pregnant women (P < 0.05). The levels of plasma CA in patients who had elective cesarean section were significantly lower than those who had vaginal delivery and emergency cesarean section (P < 0.01). However, CA levels of the cord artery in the vaginal delivery group were significantly higher than those in the cesarean section group (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Vaginal delivery is better than cesarean section for the newborn. If cesarean section is necessary, it is best for the newborn after onset of labor.

Alteration of IGF system gene expression during the postnatal development of pcd mice.

IGF-I promotes growth during postnatal development via both endocrine and autocrine actions. In pcd mice (pcd/pcd), we previously found that IGF-I mRNA expression was decreased in cerebellar Purkinje cells as they underwent apoptosis. To investigate the endocrine function of IGF-I, we examined hepatic IGF-I mRNA by Northern hybridization, circulating IGF-I peptide by radioimmunoassay, and circulating IGFBP by Western ligand blot in pcd mice. At postnatal days (D) 17 and 24, hepatic IGF-I mRNA and circulating IGF-I and IGF-II concentrations were normal in pcd mice. From D45, both hepatic IGF-I mRNA and circulating IGF-I concentrations decreased. The decrease in circulating IGF-I concentrations was accompanied by a simultaneous increase in circulating IGF-II concentrations in both the D45 and adult pcd mice. An early decrease in the circulating IGFBP-3 levels and an increase in the IGFBP-2 levels were observed at D17 and were followed by decreases in both IGFBPs at D45 and in the adult. Therefore, after the cerebellar neurodegeneration, there was an overall decrease in IGF-I gene expression in pcd mice. Our results suggest that the decrease in IGF-I gene expression may contribute to growth deficiency and multiple system degeneration in pcd mice.

Evidence that microdeletions in the alpha globin gene protect against the development of sickle cell glomerulopathy in humans.

There is a large variability in the severity of the clinical manifestations of sickle cell anemia (SSA), including renal involvement. Haplotypes in the beta-globin gene cluster associated with the geographical origin of the sickle mutation, as well as microdeletions in the alpha-globin genes, could provide an epigenetic influence on the heterogeneous outcome in SSA. It has been determined that the cause of progressive renal insufficiency in SSA is a glomerulopathy, clinically detected by the presence of macroalbuminuria (albumin excretion rate >300 mg/g creatinine). To investigate the role of the alpha-globin gene microdeletion and beta-globin gene cluster haplotypes on the degree of glomerular involvement, 76 adult SSA patients (hemoglobin SS) were studied to determine the relationship between these genetic markers and the development of sickle cell glomerulopathy. Macroalbuminuria was present in 22 (29%) of 76 adult SSA patients. The coinheritance of microdeletions in one or two of the four alpha-globin genes (alpha-thalassemia) was associated with a lower prevalence of macroalbuminuria (13%) versus patients with intact alpha-globin genes (40%, P = 0.01). By contrast, there was no association between albuminuria and beta-globin gene haplotypes (Central African Republic [CAR] versus non-CAR haplotypes). Patients with alpha-globin gene microdeletions had lower mean corpuscular volumes and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration than patients with all four alpha genes (86+/-2 versus 99+/-3 fl, and 33.9+/-0.2 versus 34.9+/-0.2%, respectively, P<0.05). There were no such hematologic differences between CAR and non-CAR beta-globin haplotypes. There were no differences in duration of disease (age), hemoglobin levels, reticulocyte index, and lactate dehydrogenase levels between those with and without glomerulopathy, but the mean arterial pressure was higher (87+/-1 mm Hg) in patients with intact alpha gene locus versus those with microdeletions (80+/-2 mm Hg, P<0.05). It is concluded that the coinheritance of microdeletions in the alpha-globin gene locus in SSA patients confers "renoprotection" by mechanisms not related to the degree of anemia or the severity of hemolysis, but could be related to a reduced mean corpuscular volume or to a lower erythrocyte hemoglobin concentration.

The influence of acupuncture on the impedance measured by four electrodes on meridians.

The impedance on the pericardium merdian near Quze (P3) and control points in 12 cases was measured by a four electrodes impedance instrument. The amplitude of impedance was recorded before, during and after needling the Neiguan. The result showed that the mean impedance on the meridian and control points before the needling were 52.8 +/- 11.0 (omega) and 61.7 +/- 10.3 (omega) respectively which had significant difference (P<0.05). During the needling, impedance decreased significantly on the meridian by 9.2 +/- 5.6 (omega) (P<0.001) while impedance decreased by only 0.12 +/- 2.4 (omega) on control points without significance (P>0.05). The impedance changed back to 51.1 +/- 11.3 (omega) and 59.9 +/- 11.0 (omega) on the meridian and control points respectively during the 5-10 minutes after withdrawing the needling. In some cases, impedance changed intermittently during the needling. The experiment implies that interstitial fluid increases during the needling by axon reflection and blood capillary expanding which may be one of the mechanisms of acupuncture regulation.

Alpha-Gal oligosaccharides: chemistry and potential biomedical application.

This article focuses on the most recent research efforts by the Wang group in the field of alpha-Gal oligosaccharides. alpha-Gal oligosaccharides are carbohydrate structures bearing a Gal( alpha)1-3Gal(beta) terminus. This class of compounds are believed to act as xenoactive antigens that instigate the hyperacute rejection in xenotransplantation. Enzymatic methods using recombinant (alpha)1-3 galactosyltransferase were employed to synthesize several alpha-Gal oligosaccharides. In addition, a chemical synthetic scheme was devised in order to produce readily accessible amounts of alpha-Gal. Conformational analysis was done using both NMR techniques and molecular modeling protocols. These studies provide important information in the structure-function relationship of alpha-Gal and anti- alpha-Gal antibodies.

alpha2C adrenoceptors inhibit adenylyl cyclase in mouse striatum: potential activation by dopamine.

alpha2C adrenoceptors occur in high density in the striatum, but the functional role of these receptors is uncertain. Mice with targeted inactivation of the alpha2C adrenoceptor gene (Adra2c-/-) and genetically related control mice expressing the wild-type alpha2C adrenoceptor (Adra2c+/+) were used to determine whether striatal alpha2C adrenoceptors modulate adenylyl cyclase activation. In striatal slices from Adra2c+/+ mice, the alpha2 adrenoceptor antagonist RX821002 facilitated forskolin-stimulated cyclic AMP accumulation in a concentration-dependent manner. In contrast, RX821002 had no effect on forskolin-stimulated cAMP accumulation in striatal slices from Adra2c-/- mice or in striatal slices from Adra2c+/+ mice treated with reserpine and alpha-methyl-rho-tyrosine to deplete monoamine neurotransmitters. Given the sparse innervation of the striatum by noradrenergic neurons, the possibility that dopamine can activate the mouse alpha2C adrenoceptor at physiologically relevant concentrations was investigated using normal rat kidney (NRK) cells transfected with the mouse alpha2A or alpha2C adrenoceptor cDNA (NRK-alpha2A or NRK-alpha2C cells). Inhibition of [3H]RX821002 binding by agonists in homogenates of transfected cells revealed an affinity of dopamine for alpha2C adrenoceptors that was higher than the affinity of norepinephrine for its cognate receptor, the alpha2A adrenoceptor. Both norepinephrine and dopamine inhibited forskolin-stimulated cAMP accumulation in intact NRK-alpha2C cells. In NRK-alpha2A cells, norepinephrine facilitated forskolin-stimulated cAMP accumulation, an effect not observed for dopamine. Together, these data demonstrate that the alpha2C adrenoceptor is negatively coupled to adenylyl cyclase and is tonically activated in mouse striatal slices. The endogenous activator of the striatal alpha2C adrenoceptor may be dopamine, as well as norepinephrine.

Racial differences in tumor volume and prostate specific antigen among radical prostatectomy patients.

PURPOSE: Black men with and without prostate cancer in general have higher prostate specific antigen (PSA) before screening and treatment than other racial groups. A preliminary study suggested that higher PSA levels may be primarily due to greater tumor burden. We compared PSA and 3-dimensional (D) tumor volume in a consecutive cohort of black and white radical prostatectomy patients in an equal access military health care setting to determine racial differences in these parameters. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Prospective data collection, 2.25 mm. step section whole mount specimen processing and 3-D tumor volume assessment were performed in 226 patients with clinical stage T1-T3 prostate cancer undergoing radical prostatectomy at our center between April 1993 and March 1997. Of the patients 25 were excluded from further analysis because of neoadjuvant hormone treatment, T3 disease or Asian race. A total of 155 white and 46 black patients were compared. RESULTS: There was no significant racial difference in the distribution of patients by age, clinical stage, pathological stage, Gleason sum or benign prostate gland volume. A significant racial difference was noted for pretreatment PSA and 3-D tumor volume. PSA values were higher in black men than in white men, and the racial difference remained statistically significant in multivariate analysis adjusting for 3-D tumor volume, benign gland volume, age, stage and Gleason sum. CONCLUSIONS: Racial difference in PSA persists, despite rigorous covariate adjustment, and further study is needed to explain this PSA difference.

Effects of acupuncture on the levels of endothelin, TXB2, and 6-keto-PGF1 alpha in apoplexy patients.

In order to delve into the mechanism governing the treatment of apoplexy by acupuncture at yangming channel points as main points, we observed the changes in the endothelin (ET) level in plasma, TXB2 and 6-Keto-PGF1 alpha levels in urine in convalescent apoplexy patients during acupuncture treatment. The results showed that the ET level in plasma in convalescent apoplexy patients was significantly higher than that in healthy subjects (P < 0.05), and the ET level in plasma in patients was decreased after one course of acupuncture treatment. It was found that before treatment the TXB2 level in urine in apoplexy patients was significantly higher than in healthy subjects, and the 6-Keto-PGF1 alpha level in urine in the patients was significantly lower than that in healthy subjects, with an increased ratio of TXB2 to 6-Keto-PGF1 alpha. After acupuncture treatment, the TXB2 level in urine was lowered with a decrease in the ratio of TXB2 to 6-Keto-PGF1 alpha. All this indicated that one of the mechanisms governing acupuncture treatment of apoplexy acupuncture at yangming channel points as main points was that acupuncture could produce therapeutic effects by adjusting the imbalance of important vaso-active substances, ET, TXA2, and PGI2.

Enhanced antitumor immune responses of IL-2 gene-modified tumor vaccine by combination with IL-1 and low dose cyclophosphamide.

To enhance the antitumor immunity induced by IL-2 gene-modified tumor vaccine, we proposed a combined protocol to treat tumor-bearing mice using IL-2 gene-modified tumor vaccine in combination with IL-1 and low-dose Cyclophosphamide(Cy). After treatment with IL-2 gene-modified B16 melanoma cell vaccine alone, the pulmonary metastases of tumor-bearing mice were reduced and their survival time was prolonged. The anti-metastases effect was improved when the vaccine was used in combination with IL-1 or low-dose Cy. The best therapeutic effect was achieved when the IL-2 gene-modified vaccine was combined with IL-1 and low-dose Cy. The cytotoxicity of the splenic CTL, NK, and the levels of IL-2, TNF secreted by splenocytes increased after tumor-bearing mice were treated with the IL-2 gene-modified tumor vaccine. The above antitumor immune functions were augmented more significantly when IL-1, low-dose Cy were used in combination with IL-2 genemodified tumor vaccine. These results demonstrated that the IL-2 gene modified vaccine could exert more potent anti-metastases effects when it is combined with IL-1 or/and low-dose Cy by activating the specific and non-specific antitumor immune responses more effectively.

Prostate biopsy schemes: 3-D visualization-based evaluation.

We have developed a prostate needle biopsy visualization system for the evaluation and optimization of biopsy schemes. Three-dimensional (3-D) prostate surface models have been reconstructed from the digitized whole-mount radical prostetactomy specimens with localized cancers. We have conducted evaluation of five major biopsy schemes with a total of 201 3-D prostate models. These are sextant, 10-pattern, 12-pattern, 14-pattern, and the 5-region schemes. The 10- and 12-pattern biopsy schemes had a 99.0% detection rate, while the rate of traditional sextant biopsy scheme was only 72.6%. The 5-region biopsy scheme had a 90.5% detection rate and the 14-pattern, which includes all the biopsies used in the above schemes, added only one additional positive case (99.5%). Our results suggest that biopsy schemes that use laterally placed biopsies based on the five region anatomical model are superior to the routinely used sextant biopsy scheme. Significant correlation is found between the tumor volume and the positive needle core volume for each of these five schemes. The 10-pattern scheme is the best in cancer detection among these five biopsy schemes.

A comparison of the preventive effects of lanthanides and fluoride on human experimental root surface carious-like lesions.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mechanisms of lanthanides prevention of human root surface carious-like lesions and to compare the effectiveness of lanthanum (La) with that of cerium (Ce) and fluoride (F). Various treatment procedures were also compared. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Acetic buffers containing lanthanum, cerium, and fluoride (500 ppm) were used individually or in combination to treat 48 cementum-dentin samples. The acid-resistant capacity of various treatment procedures was evaluated by means of scanning electron microscope, electron microprobe, and polarizing light microscope analyses. RESULTS: The acid-resistant effects of lanthanide element were comparable to those of fluoride, and their acid-resistant effects were even stronger when combined with fluoride and cerium. These effects are likely due to the formation of La(Ce)HAP, FLa(Ce)HAP, and lanthanum/cerium phosphate compounds. CONCLUSION: Combined F/La(Ce) was more effective in the prevention of root surface caries than were lanthanides alone.

[Study on double antigens sandwich enzyme immunoassay for detection of Brucella specific antibodies in human and animals].

OBJECTIVE: In order to develop practicable methods for serodiagnosis, surveillance and epidemiological surveys in human and animals Brucellosis. METHODS: A double antigens sandwich Enzyme Immunoassay (DAgS-EIA include DAgS-ELISA and DAgS-DIEA) have been developed under the basis of first production conjugate of Brucella antigen with horseradish peroxidase. Serum samples from diagnosed patients, suspected patients of Brucellosis and sheep infected with Brucella in Henan and Hebei provinces as well as from experimental animals of infected with Brucella in laboratory detected through DAgS-EIA, I-ELISA, RBPT and SAT tests. RESULTS: Of the diagnosed and suspected Brucellosis patients, positive rates of DAgS-ELISA, RBPT, I-ELISA, DAgS-DIEA and SAT were 60.0%-62.9%, 48.6%-58.1%, 55.6%, 53.7% and 44.2% respectively; as for sheep with Brucella-infection, positive rate of the above mentioned 5 tests were 81.8%. CONCLUSION: Results showed that DAgS-EIA were not only specific and practicable but may use for Brucella specific antibodies detection in humans and various animals with only one conjugate of Brucella antigen with horseradish peroxidase.

Telomerase hTR and hTRT gene expression in oral precancerous lesions and squamous cell carcinomas.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the expression of telomerase genes in oral precancerous lesions and squamous cell carcinomas and to research the relationship between telomerase gene expression and carcinogenesis of oral mucosa epithelium. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty two cases were detected for hTR and hTRT gene by in situ hybridization techniques--7 cases of normal oral mucosa, 7 cases of hyperplasia lesions, 30 cases of oral precancerous lesions (dysplasia lesions), 8 cases of oral mucosa carcinomas in situ, and 30 cases of oral squamous cell carcinomas. RESULTS: Weaker signals of hTR and hTRT gene expression were observed in normal oral epithelia and hyperplasia lesions; hTR and hTRT were positive 28.6% (4 of 14) and 21.4% (3 of 14), respectively. The expression of telomerase genes in the precancerous lesions became stronger due to phenotypic progression and the increasing degree of dysplasia; hTR and hTRT were positive 60.0% (18 of 30) and 46.7% (14 of 30), respectively. Stronger hTR and hTRT expressions were observed in squamous cell carcinoma, with an equal positivity of 81.6% (31 of 38). CONCLUSION: Telomerase gene expression is closely related to the malignant degree of oral mucosa. Telomerase is reactivated frequently during late stages of oral precancerous lesions and may play a crucial role in progression of oral cancer.

[The permeability of the cell membrane in the human uterine smooth muscle at term pregnancy].

OBJECTIVE: To study the changes of the permeability of the uterine smooth muscle cell membrane at the various stages of labor, and comparing with the onset of labor. METHODS: 18 women (38 to 41 gestational weeks) were divided into three groups: late pregnancy not in labor, prelabor, active labor, and six cases in each group. The myometrium tissues in the corpus and lower segment of the uterus were studied by the Lanthanum tracing method under transmission electron microscopy (TEM). RESULTS: Lanthanum entered into the smooth muscle cells, deposited in the mitochondria. The positive rates of the smooth muscle cells of lower segment by lanthanum tracing were markedly higher than that of corpus in late pregnancy group (P < 0.05), the difference were not found between lower segment and corpus in prelabor group (P > 0.05). The positive rates in corpus were significant higher than that of lower site in the active labor group (P < 0.05); Comparing corpus to corpus, the positive rates were not significantly different between late pregnancy and prelabor group (P > 0.05), then in active labor group it were markedly higher than those in the other two groups (P < 0.05, respectively); but in lower segment, the positive rates in late pregnancy group were significant higher than that in prelabor and active labor group (P < 0.05 respectively), no difference was found between prelabor and active labor (P > 0.05). The lanthanum deposition in the late pregnancy and prelabor groups was mainly showed in larger mitochondria within the smooth muscle cell while in active labor group, it laid on the outer and inner membrane and cristae of all the mitochondria. CONCLUSION: The permeability of uterine smooth muscle cell membrane at term, pregnancy increases, especiany in uterine corpus, which showed a close correlation with the onset of labor.

[Female malignant tumors of genital organs with pericardial effusion: report of 9 cases and review of literatures].

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical characteristics and the management of malignant tumors of genital organs with pericardial effusion. METHODS: Nine cases of gynecologic malignant tumors with pericardial effusion were analyzed retrospectively. RESULTS: Nine cases of gynecologic malignant tumors were separated into 4 cases of epithelial ovarian carcinoma, 2 cases of diffuse ovarian granulosa cell tumor, 2 cases of cervix carcinoma and 1 case of endometrial carcinoma. The mean age was 41.6 years, the intervals from primary tumors to pericardial effusions were 2-49 months. The clinical symptoms were mainly severe shortness of breath. Nine cases were diagnosed by chest X-rays, 6 of them were confirmed by B ultrasonography simultaneously. Three cases were given pericardiocentesis and their cytologic examinations were positive. Two cases of ovarian malignant tumors have been surviving for 49 and 12 months respectively after pericardiocentesis with local chemotherapy and effective systemic chemotherapy, 1 case was survived for 5 months by hormone therapy, but 6 untreated cases were died of cardiac tamponade within one month. CONCLUSIONS: Malignant tumors of genital organs with pericardial effusion could be definitely diagnosed by X-ray, B ultrasonography and cytology. The surviving period may be prolonged by pericardio centesis combined with systemic effective chemotherapy.
