Dissection of signaling pathways in fourteen breast cancer cell lines using reverse-phase protein lysate microarray.

Signal transduction pathways play a crucial role in breast cancer development, progression, and response to different therapies. A major problem in breast cancer therapy is the heterogeneity among different tumor types and cell lines commonly used in preclinical studies. To characterize the signaling pathways of some of the commonly used breast cancer cell lines and dissect the relationship among a number of pathways and some key genetic and molecular events in breast cancer development, such as p53 mutation, ErbB2 expression, and estrogen receptor (ER)/progesterone receptor (PR) status, we performed pathway profiling of 14 breast cancer cell lines by measuring the expression and phosphorylation status of 40 different cell signaling proteins with 53 specific antibodies using a protein lysate array. Cluster analysis of the expression data showed that there was close clustering of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase, Akt, mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), Src, and platelet-derived growth factor receptor beta (PDGFRbeta) in all of the cell lines. The most differentially expressed proteins between ER- and PR-positive and ER- and PR-negative breast cells were mTOR, Akt (pThr308), PDGFRbeta, PDGFRbeta (pTyr751), panSrc, Akt (pSer473), insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 5 (IGFBP5), Src (pTyr418), mTOR (pSer2448), and IGFBP2. Many apoptotic proteins, such as apoptosis-inducing factor, IGFBP3, bad, bax, and cleaved caspase 9, were overexpressed in mutant p53-carrying breast cancer cells. Hexokinase isoenzyme 1, ND2, and c-kit were the most differentially expressed proteins in high and low ErbB2-expressing breast cancer cells. This study demonstrated that ER/PR status, ErbB2 expression, and p53 status are major molecules that impact downstream signaling pathways.

[Comparative study on clinical features of 215 patients with acute and subacute severe hepatitis.].

BACKGROUND: To analyze the clinical features of acute severe hepatitis (ASH) and subacute severe hepatitis (SSH) by comparison analysis. METHODS: The clinical features of 215 cases with ASH and SSH from 1995 to 2005 were retrospectively analyzed by using chi-test, t-test and regression analysis. RESULTS: The most common cause of ASH or SSH was hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection (>30%). Anti-tuberculosis therapy was the main cause of drug-induced ASH or SSH. The incidences of hepatic encephalopathy were 78.13% and 43.05% respectively (P less than 0.001). Prothrombin activity was less than 20% and less than 30%, respectively in cases with ASH and SSH. The most common complications of ASH were hepatic encephalopathy, imbalance of electrolyte and cerebral edema, and that of SSH were ascites, imbalance of electrolyte and hepatic encephalopathy. Prothrombin time, ratio of WBC and neutrophil count were positively related to case fatality of ASH or SSH. Prothrombin activity and total cholesterol (TC) were negatively correlated with fatality of ASH or SSH. Total bilirubin, blood ammonia and creatinine were also positively correlated with fatality of SSH; chlolinesterase, triglyceride, PLT, albumin were negatively correlated with fatality of SSH. CONCLUSION: ASH and SSH are two different entities because of obvious differences in the ages of suffering, the incidence and occurring time of hepatic encephalopathy, abnormality of function of blood coagulation and the marker for predicting prognosis. Severe abnormality of function of blood coagulation is an important marker with high sensitivity and specificity in ASH or SSH patients without hepatic encephalopathy.

Filling fraction limit for intrinsic voids in crystals: doping in skutterudites.

The doping limit or the filling fraction limit (FFL) of various impurities for the intrinsic voids in the lattice of is studied by the density functional method. The FFL is shown to be determined not only by the interaction between the impurity and host atoms but also by the formation of secondary phases between the impurity atoms and one of the host atoms. The predicted FFLs for Ca, Sr, Ba, La, Ce, and Yb in are in excellent agreement with reported experimental data. A correlation between the FFL of an impurity atom and its valence state and electronegativity is discovered.

Two pathways for the activation of small-conductance potassium channels in neurons of substantia nigra pars reticulata.

Neurons in substantia nigra pars reticulata express the messenger RNA for SK2 but not for SK3 subunits that form small-conductance, Ca2+-dependent K+ channels in dopamine neurons. To determine pathways for the activation of small-conductance, Ca2+-dependent K+ channels in substantia nigra pars reticulata neurons of rats and mice, we studied effects of the selective blocker of small-conductance, Ca2+-dependent K+ channels, apamin (0.01 or 0.3 microM). Apamin diminished the afterhyperpolarization following each action potential and induced burst discharges in substantia nigra pars reticulata neurons. Apamin had a robust effect already at a low (10 nM) concentration consistent with the expression of the SK2 subunit. Afterhyperpolarizations were also reduced by the Ca2+ channel blockers Ni2+ (100 microM) and omega-conotoxin GVIA (1 microM). Depletion of intracellular Ca2+ stores did not change the afterhyperpolarization. However, we observed outward current pulses that occurred independently from action potentials and were abrogated by apamin. Apart from a faster time course, they shared all properties with spontaneous hyperpolarizations or outward currents that ryanodine receptor-mediated Ca2+ release from intracellular stores induces in juvenile dopamine neurons. Sensitization of ryanodine receptors by caffeine silenced substantia nigra pars reticulata neurons. This effect was abolished by the depletion of intracellular Ca2+ stores. We conclude that SK2 channels in substantia nigra pars reticulata neurons are activated by Ca2+ influx through at least two types of Ca2+ channels in the membrane and by ryanodine receptor-mediated Ca2+ release from intracellular stores. Ryanodine receptors do not amplify small-conductance, Ca2+-dependent K+ channel activation by the Ca2+ influx during a single spike. Yet, ryanodine receptor-mediated Ca2+ release and, thereby, an activation of small-conductance, Ca2+-dependent K+ channels by intracellular Ca2+ are available for excitability modulation in these output neurons of the basal ganglia system.

The effect of citrate, oxalate, acetate, silicate and phosphate on stability of synthetic arsenic-loaded ferrihydrite and Al-ferrihydrite.

The effect of the organic species oxalate, citrate and acetate and the inorganic species silicate and phosphate on release of As(V) from synthetic arsenic-loaded ferrihydrite and Al-ferrihydrite in the pH range 4-8 was investigated. For ferrihydrite, the organic species increased %As(V) extraction in the order: acetate PO4(3-). Competitive adsorption of the investigated organic and inorganic species on ferrihydrite and Al-ferrihydrite could explain the enhanced release of As(V) into solution. However, disproportionate adsorption of other species relative to amount of As(V) release occurs, suggesting that mechanisms other than competitive adsorption are also operative. The results could best be explained in terms of combination of competitive adsorption and processes involving pH-dependent dissolution of ferrihydrite/Al-ferrihydrite, formation of various complex ionic species involving Al(III), Fe(III), As(V), SiO3(2-), PO4(3-), OH-, H+ and organic species: acetate, oxalate and citrate.

Amyloid beta-peptide(1-42) and hydrogen peroxide-induced toxicity are mediated by TRPM2 in rat primary striatal cultures.

Amyloid beta-peptide (Abeta) is the main component of senile plaques which characterize Alzheimer's disease and may induce neuronal death through mechanisms which include oxidative stress. To date, the signalling pathways linking oxidant stress, a component of several neurodegenerative diseases, to cell death in the CNS are poorly understood. Melastatin-like transient receptor potential 2 (TRPM2) is a Ca(2+)-permeant non-selective cation channel, which responds to increases in oxidative stress levels in the cell and is activated by oxidants such as hydrogen peroxide. We demonstrate here that Abeta and hydrogen peroxide both induce death in cultured rat striatal cells which express TRPM2 endogenously. Transfection with a splice variant that acts as a dominant negative blocker of TRPM2 function (TRPM2-S) inhibited both hydrogen peroxide- and Abeta-induced increases in intracellular-free Ca(2+) and cell death. Functional inhibition of TRPM2 activation by the poly(ADP-ribose)polymerase inhibitor SB-750139, a modulator of intracellular pathways activating TRPM2, attenuated hydrogen peroxide- and Abeta-induced cell death. Furthermore, a small interfering RNA which targets TRPM2, reduced TRPM2 mRNA levels and the toxicity induced by hydrogen peroxide and Abeta. These data demonstrate that activation of TRPM2, functionally expressed in primary cultures of rat striatum, contributes to Abeta- and oxidative stress-induced striatal cell death.

Chinese herbal medicine for atopic eczema.

BACKGROUND: Traditional Chinese herbal mixtures have been used to treat atopic eczema for many years. Their efficacy has attracted public attention and recently some clinical trials have been undertaken. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of Chinese herbal mixtures in the treatment of atopic eczema. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) ( January 2004), the Cochrane Skin Group Specialised Register (January 2004), MEDLINE (1966 to January 2004), EMBASE (1980 to January 2004), CINHL (1980 to January 2004) and a number of complementary medicine databases. In addition, the cited references of all trials identified and key review articles were searched. Pharmaceutical companies involved in oral traditional Chinese herbs and experts in the field were contacted. SELECTION CRITERIA: Randomised controlled trials of Chinese herbal mixtures used in the treatment of atopic eczema. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: Two reviewers independently applied eligibility criteria, assessed the quality of the trials and extracted data. Any discrepancies were discussed to achieve consensus. MAIN RESULTS: Four randomised controlled trials, with eight weeks for each phase, met the inclusion criteria. The trials randomised 159 participants aged from 1 to 60 years. The withdrawal rates ranged from 7.5% to 22.5% and no trial used intention to treat analysis. Three trials were randomised placebo controlled, two-phase cross-over designs assessing the same Chinese herbal mixture, Zemaphyte. In two of these three trials the reduction in erythema and surface damage was greater on Zemaphyte than on placebo, and participants slept better and expressed a preference for Zemaphyte. One trial also reported that participants itched less. The fourth trial was an open-label design comparing Zemaphyte in herbal form with Zemaphyte as a freeze dried preparation. There was a reduction in erythema and surface damage with both formulations, but no comparison between the two formulations was reported. Some adverse effects were reported in all four trials, but none were regarded as serious. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS: Chinese herbal mixtures may be effective in the treatment of atopic eczema. However, only four small poorly reported RCTs of the same product, Zemaphyte, were found and the results were heterogeneous. Further well-designed, larger scale trials are required, but Zemaphyte is no longer being manufactured.

Toxicity and detoxification of lipid-derived aldehydes in cultured retinal pigmented epithelial cells.

Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) is the leading cause of blindness in the developed world and yet its pathogenesis remains poorly understood. Retina has high levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and functions under conditions of oxidative stress. To investigate whether peroxidative products of PUFAs induce apoptosis in retinal pigmented epithelial (RPE) cells and possibly contribute to ARMD, human retinal pigmented epithelial cells (ARPE-19) were exposed to micromolar concentrations of H2O2, 4-hydroxynonenal (HNE) and 4-hydroxyhexenal (HHE). A concentration- and time-dependent increase in H2O2-, HNE-, and HHE-induced apoptosis was observed when monitored by quantifying DNA fragmentation as determined by ELISA, flow cytometry, and Hoechst staining. The broad-spectrum inhibitor of apoptosis Z-VAD inhibited apoptosis. Treatment of RPE cells with a thionein peptide prior to exposure to H2O2 or HNE reduced the formation of protein-HNE adducts as well as alteration in mitochondrial membrane potential and apoptosis. Using 3H-HNE, various metabolic pathways to detoxify HNE by ARPE-19 cells were studied. The metabolites were separated by HPLC and characterized by ElectroSpray Ionization-Mass Spectrometry (ESI-MS) and gas chromatography-MS. Three main metabolic routes of HNE detoxification were detected: (1) conjugation with glutathione (GSH) to form GS-HNE, catalyzed by glutathione-S-transferase (GST), (2) reduction of GS-HNE catalyzed by aldose reductase, and (3) oxidation of HNE catalyzed by aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH). Preventing HNE formation by a combined strategy of antioxidants, scavenging HNE by thionein peptide, and inhibiting apoptosis by caspase inhibitors may offer a potential therapy to limit retinal degeneration in ARMD.

Predissociation mechanism for the lowest 1 Pi u states of N2.

Separate coupled-channel Schrödinger-equation (CSE) models of the interacting (1)Pi(u) (b,c,o) and (3)Pi(u) (C,C(')) states of N(2) are combined, through the inclusion of spin-orbit interactions, to produce a five-channel CSE model of the N(2) predissociation. Comparison of the model calculations with an experimental database, consisting principally of detailed new measurements of the vibrational and isotopic dependence of the (1)Pi(u) linewidths and lifetimes, provides convincing evidence that the predissociation of the lowest (1)Pi(u) levels in N(2) is primarily an indirect process, involving spin-orbit coupling between the b (1)Pi(u)- and C (3)Pi(u)-state levels, the latter levels themselves heavily predissociated electrostatically by the C(') (3)Pi(u) continuum. The well-known large width of the b(v=3) level in (14)N(2) is caused by an accidental degeneracy with C(v=9). This CSE model provides the first quantitative explanation of the predissociation mechanism for the dipole-accessible (1)Pi(u) states of N(2), and is thus likely to prove useful in the construction of realistic radiative-transfer and photochemical models for nitrogen-rich planetary atmospheres.

Comparison of modulation of sheep, mouse and buffalo lymphocyte responses by Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica excretory-secretory products.

In order to explain the difference in susceptibility to Fasciola hepatica and F. gigantica between animal species, the activity of their excretory-secretory products (FhESP and FgESP, respectively) on concanavalin A (ConA)-induced proliferation of different animal species (sheep, mouse and buffalo) lymphocytes was compared. At high doses, FhESP inhibited proliferation of lymphocytes of all the animal species tested, and at low doses they inhibited the proliferation of sheep lymphocytes and increased the proliferation of buffalo and mouse lymphocytes. The effects of FgESP were similar but the intensity of FgESP inhibition was less than FhESP. The immunomodulatory effects of FhESP or FgESP could not alone explain the susceptibility level of hosts to Fasciola spp. The immunomodulatory molecules of FhESP and FgESP and their role in the course of Fasciola spp. infection should be further investigated.

Relationship between Heberden's nodes and underlying radiographic changes of osteoarthritis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether clinically determined Heberden's nodes (HN) and Bouchard's nodes (BN) are associated with underlying individual radiographic changes of osteoarthritis (OA). METHODS: 232 index patients with symptomatic large joint and/or hand OA, and 257 of their first degree relatives were included. HN were graded 0-2; BN were scored as present/absent. Joint space narrowing (JSN) and osteophyte (OST) were each scored 0-3 using the OARSI atlas. A weighted kappa test was used to examine intraobserver reproducibility. Odds ratio (OR) was estimated for the relationship between nodes and associated JSN and OST. RESULTS: The adjusted OR of HN for underlying JSN in the same digit was 1.72 (95% CI 1.47 to 2.02), whereas for OST it was higher at 5.15 (95% CI 4.37 to 6.08). A similar trend was seen with BN and underlying OA, with OST having a higher OR (OR = 2.98, 95% CI 2.55 to 3.47) than JSN (OR = 1.62, 95% CI 1.37 to 1.91). CONCLUSION: There is a positive relationship between HN/BN and underlying radiographic changes of OA, especially OST. Nodes do appear to link pathologically to OA in interphalangeal joints.

The prevalence of overweight adults living in a rural and remote community. The Bella Coola Valley.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of overweight adults living in the Bella Coola Valley. DESIGN: A retrospective chart review of all people attending the Bella Coola Medical Clinic, and residing in the Bella Coola Valley. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Weight (killograms) and body mass index (BMI). RESULTS: More than 92% of clinic charts had a recent measurement of weight and 65% of clinic charts had height measured; accordingly, we were able to calculate the BMI on 65% of the clinic population. Over 50% of the adults residing in the Bella Coola Valley are considered overweight (BMI > 27, the Health Canada definition) and only 25% have a BMI within an acceptable range (20.0 to 24.9). Proportionately more Aboriginal people are overweight (65%) than non-Aboriginal people (47%); men and women were similarly overweight (56% and 53%, respectively); and proportionately more people were overweight with increased age. The prevalence of being overweight in people aged 65 years and older is 66%. As weight increased so did the prevalence of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, diverticular disease, dyspepsia/gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), alcohol issues, asthma, depression, coronary artery disease, and eczematous dermatitis. There was no relationship between increasing weight and atrial fibrillation, cerebrovascular disease, inflammatory arthritis, hypothyroidism, chronic back/neck pain, peripheral vascular disease, chronic obstructive lung disease, congestive heart failure, and cancer. CONCLUSION: Living in a remote community does not protect against obesity and the complications of obesity. Obesity is present in a greater proportion of Aboriginal people. The treatment and prevention of obesity in rural populations of differing ethnicity may need to be individualized.

The relationship between self-rated health, stress, health care, overall quality of life and weight in a rural population.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if there is a relationship between self-rated health, stress, health care, satisfaction, overall quality of life scores and weight. DESIGN: A mailed survey and retrospective chart review of people living in the Bella Coola Valley who attend the Bella Coola Medical Clinic. STUDY POPULATION: Adults living in the Bella Coola Valley who are registered with the Bella Coola Medical Clinic. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Self-rated health, stress, health care received, satisfaction with health, happiness, overall quality of life scores and weight (body mass index). RESULTS: An estimated 1734 residents live in the Bella Coola and are registered with the clinic. A total of 968 useable surveys were returned for a response rate of 56% (968/1734). Nine hundred and eighteen survey respondents had a recent weight in kilograms documented; 803 survey respondents had a height documented. A higher weight was associated with poorer self-rated health, higher stress levels, and lower satisfaction with health. It was also associated with lower self-esteem and satisfaction scores, particularly in younger obese people. A higher weight was not correlated with spirituality, overall quality of life, health care rating, or happiness scores. CONCLUSION: Increasing weight may contribute to poorer health, higher stress, lower satisfaction with health and poorer self-esteem. However, we found no evidence that increased weight impairs happiness or overall quality of life. This may be one reason for the lack of success of weight loss strategies that focus on happiness and overall quality of life to increase readiness and motivation. Alternatively, focussing on secondary medical benefits and self-esteem may be useful.

Double-antigen sandwich ELISA for detection of antibodies to SARS-associated coronavirus in human serum.

The study presented here was conducted to evaluate the performance of a double-antigen sandwich ELISA to detect antibodies in human serum against the coronavirus associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). A recombinant partial nucleocapsid protein of SARS-associated coronavirus was used as a serodiagnostic antigen in the ELISA. A total of 2892 clinical serum samples were tested with the ELISA kit, which positively identified 25 of 35 (71.4%) samples of patients with confirmed SARS infection, 286 of 407 (70%) samples of patients suspected of having SARS, 229 of 302 (75.8%) samples of convalescent SARS patients, and 0 of 544 samples obtained from healthcare workers; only 1 of 1604 clinical samples obtained from patients with other diseases demonstrated a weakly positive result. These results indicate that the double-antigen sandwich ELISA is an effective screening method for the serodiagnosis of SARS-associated coronavirus.

Human cystic echinococcosis in two Mongolian communities in Hobukesar (China) and Bulgan (Mongolia).

In order to investigate the prevalence of human cystic echinococcosis (CE) in traditional Mongolian communities in western Mongolia and Xinjiang (northwest China), studies were carried out between 1995 and 2000, on two ethnically identical populations in Hobukesar (China) and Bulgan (Mongolia). The prevalence of human hepatic CE in the two communities was significantly different. In Hobukesar, human CE prevalence by ultrasound was 2.7% (49/1844), while in Bulgan it was 0.2% (4/1609) (P<0.001). Dog surveys showed that coproantigen-positive rates or dog necropsy positives were similar in both communities (35.0% in Hobukesar and 35.7% in Bulgan). Comparing possible risk factors, there appeared to be some significant differences between the two communities, which might contribute to the observed difference in CE prevalence. These included: the proportion of herdsman or farmers recorded; the proportions of dog ownership and livestock ownership; and the proportion of families practising home slaughter. The presence of a Russian dog-dosing programme up to the mid-1980s may explain the lower prevalence of human CE in the Bulgan population; no similar programme operated in the China-administered Hobukesar community.

Leukotriene B4 receptor inhibitor LY293111 induces cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in human anaplastic large-cell lymphoma cells via JNK phosphorylation.

Anaplastic large-cell lymphoma (ALCL) is a heterogeneous lymphoma category in which a subset of cases carry the t(2;5)(p23;q35) or variant translocations resulting in overexpression of anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK). LY293111 (2-[2-propyl-3-[3-[2-ethyl-4-(4-fluorophenyl)-5-hydroxyphenoxy]-propoxy]-phenoxy] benzoic acid sodium salt) is a leukotriene B4 receptor antagonist, which was found to be safe and tolerable in Phase I clinical trials. In this study, we investigated the potential therapeutic effects and mechanisms of action of LY293111 in ALCL cell lines. LY293111 inhibited proliferation of both ALK(+) and ALK(-) ALCL cell in a dose-dependent fashion and induced complete G(1)-S cell cycle arrest, which was accompanied by upregulation of p27 and downregulation of cyclin E. Pretreatment with LY293111 for 4 h resulted in profound inhibition of serum-induced phosphorylation of extracellular-regulated kinases-1 and 2 and Akt and a concomitant increase in the phosphorylation of the stress-activated kinase c-jun N-terminal kinases (JNK). Simultaneously, LY293111 induced caspase-dependent apoptosis via activation of the intrinsic pathway, including early loss of mitochondrial inner transmembrane potential and the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), cleavage of caspases-9, -3, poly ADP-ribose polymerase (PARP) and X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis. The phospho-JNK inhibitor SP600125 partially protected Sup-M2 cells from LY293111-induced apoptosis, PARP cleavage and ROS generation, suggesting a role for JNK in LY293111-induced cell death. These results warrant further studies of LY293111 in ALCL.

The relationship between the androgen receptor CAG repeat polymorphism length and the response to intermittent androgen suppression therapy for advanced prostate cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the duration of the off-treatment interval in patients being treated with intermittent androgen deprivation therapy can be predicted by the length of the CAG trinucleotide repeat polymorphism in the androgen receptor. METHODS: This is a companion study to a prospective randomized trial, NCIC CTG PR-7, comparing intermittent to continuous androgen deprivation therapy in men with PSA progression after radiation therapy. The duration of the first off-treatment interval was established for 76 participants randomized to the intermittent therapy arm of the trial. Androgen receptor CAG repeat polymorphism lengths were determined for these 76 participants. Statistical analysis was completed to determine a relationship between CAG repeat length and the duration of the off-treatment interval. RESULTS: A significant correlation was not established (P = 0.424) between androgen receptor CAG repeat length and the duration of the first off-treatment interval. Categorical analysis of CAG repeat lengths using 18 and 22 as cutoff points did not find any significant difference in the mean duration of the off-treatment interval between categories (P = 0.672 and 0.774, respectively). CONCLUSION: No relationship was established between the duration of the first off-treatment interval and the CAG repeat length.

A study of neonatal swimming (water therapy) applied in clinical obstetrics.

OBJECTIVE: To study the significance of some clinical parameters related to neonatal 'swimming' (water therapy) during hospitalization. METHODS: Normal newborns were randomly divided into two groups to observe their birth weight, weight before discharge, time of first defecation and meconium turning yellow. Group one was the swimming (study) group, comprising a total of 223 newborns including 127 babies delivered after spontaneous vaginal delivery and 96 babies after Cesarean section. Group two was the bathing (control) group, comprising 154 newborns including 109 babies delivered after spontaneous vaginal delivery and 45 babies after Cesarean section. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in birth weight between the two groups (p > 0.05). However, the mean weight before discharge of the babies in the study group was 3.29 + 0.35 and 3.51 + 0.40 kg, spontaneous vaginal delivery vs. Cesarean section, compared with 3.09 + 0.38 and 3.17 + 0.48 kg, respectively, in the control group (p < 0.01). The corresponding mean times of meconium turning yellow were 39.15 + 15.88 and 39.02 + 13.60 h in the study group compared with 48.01 + 19.42 and 55.67 + 25.05 h in the control group. This difference was significant (p < 0.01), as was the difference between the time of first defecation (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Neonatal swimming can accelerate babies' growth in the early stage.
