[Paget-von Schroetter syndrome: case description in the light of the literature].
A 27 year old patient with a thrombosis of the subclavian vein (Paget- von Schroetter's-syndrome) was treated successfully with a systemic streptokinase thrombolysis. Indications and success of the different therapeutic ways in current literature (conventional management, systemic and local thrombolysis) are compared to each other. The authors prefer treatment with systemic thrombolysis, patients with contraindications should be treated with conservative management. Nevertheless no final conclusions can be drawn, as there are no controlled studies comparing the different concepts in treatment.
[Sonography of the retrobulbar space in autoimmune hyperthyroidism of the Basedow type].
B-scan was performed to examine the orbits of 54 patients with Graves' disease. The thickness of the medial and lateral rectus muscle was measured and the results were compared to a control of 24 persons. 21 of the 54 patients with Graves' disease showed different degrees of eye changes in Graves' disease (Class I to IV). In comparison to the control 31 of the 33 patients without clinical signs or symptoms of Graves' orbitopathy have enlarged extraocular muscles. This guides to the presumption of an obligatory orbital involvement in Graves' disease.

[Endocrine orbitopathy. Results of therapy in patients with reference to new pathogenetic aspects].
Present available conservative methods of treatment were evaluated in 148 patients with euthyroid endocrine ophthalmopathy. Levothyroxine was used as the basic drug in confirming normal thyroid function after goitre operation or radio-iodine therapy. In addition, prednisone was used, at first in a massive single dose and then alternating daily. Retrobulbar X-radiation was additionally given to 21 patients. Besides, 47 patients also received a lymphokinetic drug (Venalot-Depot) assuming the endocrine eye symptoms are manifestations of "local myxoedema". No single drug was found to be superior to any of the others but a combination can be successful as long as the period between manifestation of the eye symptoms and onset of treatment has not been more than two years.

[Autoradiographic studies on protein metabolism and histochemical demonstration of the brain zinc content in diabetes mellitus. 1. Comparison in experimental streptozotocin-induced diabetes].
By application of streptozotocin diabetes mellitus is induced in rats: 40 mg/kg body weight streptozotocin produce a fairly serious diabetes with minimal ketosis, 125 mg/kg body weight streptozotocin cause a severe diabetic keto-acidosis. After 72 hours these animals and also a group of control animals receive 8.33 mCi/animal 3H-leucine intraperitoneally. By means of stripping film autoradiograms the rates of uptake of 3H-leucine in different areas of the rat brain are measured. The values of the control animals are compared with those of a fairly serious diabetes and those of a severe diabetic keto-acidosis. In the regions of the neocortex parietalis and of the thalamus the 3H-leucine values of the diabetic animals are considerably lower in comparison with the controls, and that irrespective of the degree of severity of the diabetic disease. Compared with the control animals the 3H-leucine values of diabetic animals decrease according to the degree of severity of the disease within the Ammon's horn and the dentate fascia. Within the Ammon's horn and dentate fascia also the zinc contents change very specifically in different areas with the degree of severity of diabetes mellitus. The zinc is identified on H2S-alcohol fixed brains by means of a photographic development. The particular significance of the Ammon's horn and the dentate fascia concerning diabetic metabolic conditions is discussed.

[Early diagnosis of malignant thyroid neoplasms].
Description of the value of cytology in the ambulant diagnosis of the thyroid gland bases on more than 4000 aspiration-punctions of thyroid gland (Wohlenberg and Pfannenstiel 1974). The indications and contraindications of the aspiration-punction are specified; the scintigraphic cold area is elaborated as a domin of the aspiration-punction. The applied technique and classification of the cytological diagnoses are 99 per cent identical with the histological diagnoses. Because of the large number of pathological modifications of the thyroid gland that have been identified as definitely benign a great many operations can be avoided. The knowledge of the history and the clinical results resp. of the course of the disease prevents delay of urgently indicated operations in cases of uncertain cytological diagnoses.
[Retrobulbular tissue changes following TSH administration and influence of various drugs in rats].
Our results demonstrate that the thyreotropin induced exophthalmus is a useful model for testing the efficacy of drugs in animal experiments. Concerning the exophthalmus producing tissue factors till now only qualitative results could be offered. Measuring the incorporation of 3H methionine the statements could be improved quantitatively. Hyaloronidase markedly reduced the thyreotropin induced exophthalmus. L-triiodothyronine, D-triiodothyronine. L-thyroxine, D-thyroxine and hydrocortisone had no certain influence on the TSH induced alterations.
[Is goiter an endemic disease in the German Federal Republic? (AUTHOR'S TRANSL)].
Statistical analysis of indexed information on 5,4 million men, subject to military conscription, gave a goitre incidence of 15.29 per cent. This corresponds to an endemic state and would suggest that goitre prevention programme is needed.
