Abortifacient activity in leaves, roots and seeds of Phytolacca acinosa.

Fresh leaves, roots and seeds of Phytolacca acinosa were individually extracted with 0.9% saline and cold acetone was added to the supernatants. The resultant precipitates were dialyzed against distilled water and lyophilized to form acetone powders (AP). The relative potencies of abortifacient activity of the APs were: seed greater than root greater than leaf. The abortifacient activity in these APs was susceptible to destruction by heat and pepsin.

Automatic detection of asymmetry in skin tumors.

Asymmetry, a critical feature in the diagnosis of malignant melanoma, is analyzed using a new algorithm to find a major axis of asymmetry and calculate the degree of asymmetry of the tumor outline. The algorithm provides a new objective definition of asymmetry. A dermatologist classified 86 tumors as symmetric or asymmetric. Borders of tumors were found either manually or automatically using a radial search method. With either method, asymmetry determination by the asymmetry algorithm agreed with the dermatologist's determination of asymmetry in about 93% of cases.

Changes in leucine uptake in the retina of the hamster after traumatic detachment.

Protein metabolism was investigated in detached hamster retinas. By sucking off 0.2 ml of aqueous humor from the anterior chamber through limbic insertion of a 27-gauge needle, a tractional force pulled off the neural retina from the retinal pigment epithelium and created a simple detachment without retinal breaks in the right eyes of the hamsters. The left eyes were left untouched as normal controls and sham controls were induced by simple limbic insertion without suction. The animals were sacrificed at selected intervals of 1, 3, 6, 9, 16, 24, 32 days after the operation. Subsequently, scintillation counting and autoradiography were employed to study retinal protein metabolism using leucine uptake as an index. After tritiated leucine uptake, scintillation counting of radioactive substance indicated that detached retinas had taken in less tritiated leucine than normal controls from day 1 to 6 after the operation, but this change had normalized by day 9. For autoradiography, the change in leucine uptake rate was shown to be different in different layers. All the retinal cells seemed to show a decreased leucine uptake with the exception of the outer nuclear layer, in which leucine appeared to be significantly upregulated. This paper illustrates the patterns of protein metabolism and their change after traumatic detachment as well as their possible recovery.

Effects of ginsenosides, lectins and Momordica charantia insulin-like peptide on corticosterone production by isolated rat adrenal cells.

Ginsenosides Rb1, Rb2, Rc and Rg1 inhibited steroidogenesis induced by a maximally active dose of corticotropin in isolated rat adrenal cells. The galactose-binding lectins from Momordica charantia seeds and Trichosanthes kirilowii tubers and mannose-binding concanavalin A did not affect basal corticosterone production. The lectins potentiated steroidogenesis induced by a submaximal dose of corticotropin but were without effect on steroidogenesis induced by a maximally active dose of corticotropin. Momordica charantia insulin-like peptide did not affect steroidogenesis.
