Enhanced detection of asymptomatic renal masses with routine tomography during excretory urography.

In a prospective study of a diagnositc scheme for evaluating renal masses, it was observed that a significant number of masses (29 per cent) would have been undetected without the aid of routine tomography. The renal masses detected with the aid of tomography are either small or peripheral lesions which cause no impingement upon the renal collecting system. Without specific symptoms referable to a renal mass and without hematuria, many renal masses will be overlooked on standard excretory urography. The general improvement in diagnostic quality, the ease with which this procedure may be added to excretory urography, and the minimal expense involved would be additional factors which should justify the use of routine tomography with excretory urography in any radiology department.

Nonsurgical pneumoperitoneum.

Free intraperitoneal air is not necessarily caused by a perforated viscus. The present study reviews the causes of pneumoperitoneum that do not necessitate laparotomy, and emphasizes the importance of obtaining a complete clinical history.

Medial displacement osteotomy for unstable intertrochanteric femoral fractures.

The charts and roentgenograms of 86 consecutive patients treated by medial displacement osteotomy between 1970 and 1974 were reviewed. All patients had unstable four-fragment intertrochanteric fractures and were treated by the residents and attending staff of the hospitals served by the University of Alabama Medical Center. Thirty patients had sufficient follow-up to be included in the preliminary retrospective study. There were complications of fixation in 11 patients (37%) and one superficial wound infection (3%). The most significant factors associated with complications of fixation were (1) placement of the nail in a superior and anterior position in the femoral neck and head, and (2) advanced osteoporosis. No correlation was noted with the distance of the tip of the nail from the femoral articular cartilage.

Sampling in physical therapy research.

Although the importance of appropriate statistical analyses of the results of physical therapy research is well documented, the theory and methodology of sampling, the procedure by which the data of research are usually obtained, has received much less attention in the physical therapy literature. To help fill this gap, some of the basic concepts and techniques of sampling are discussed.

Beyond analysis of variance. A comparison of some multiple comparison procedures.

In analysis of variance, when the null hypothesis of no difference among several treatment means is rejected, the investigator concludes that not all treatment means are equal. The logical question that arises at this point concerns which means, then, are different from which others. In many research reports, this question is never answered. In those instances where an attempt is made to pinpoint just where the differences among means occur, the procedure employed is frequently inappropriate. This article describes the most frequently used of the theoretically sound procedures that are available for making all possible comparisons among means. Four procedures are illustrated with the same experimental example.
