The design of design teams in high-technology industries.

Every design enterprise in high-technology involves a large multi-disciplinary team. In the context of man-machine interaction there are two related issues concerning the design system. Firstly, the team must be divided into sub-teams which can complete separate tasks within the context of the total system concept. Secondly, there are human factors design issues which often run across the work of the sub-teams. The division of a design effort into separate tasks is a considerable art but there are some general principles such as the minimisation of communication across interfaces and the standardisation of procedures for consolidating, communicating and recording design decisions. A human factors service must be available on a wide range of issues, including coding and storage of information concerning progress to date, the man-machine interfaces, work space and working environment design, and the design of instruction manuals. The ergonomist cannot confine his solutions within design. There are complementary issues of training which are usually organisationally separated. The ergonomist must cooperate with personnel specialists responsible for staffing levels and training. In recent years useful bridges have developed in the form of common interests in task analysis and simulation.

Age, skill, and management.

Although laboratory-based studies would suggest that most human attributes decay with age, almost all organizations and communities appoint individuals aged about fifty-five years as their policy-makers and leaders. Some human attributes which may improve with age are described from a series of skills analyses of managers. The older manager is more acceptable because he or she is less personally competitive, more capable of taking a global view concentrating on essentials, more veridical, more tolerant, more directional, and more aware of his or her own assets, limitations, and biases.

Ergonomics and community needs.

In this article the Chairman of The Ergonomics Research Society considers, from the background of a recent study conference, some of the current changes in technology and the community, some resultant ergonomics problems, and how ergonomics resources should be better applied to serve community needs.

The ergonomics of information presentation.

This article is restricted to the human aspects of information presentation. Clearly any practical problem of display design must be solved in the context of current instrumentation and the final choice may well be dominated by relative availability and cost. It could be argued that ergonomics as a technology distinct from the human sciences must incorporate these wider factors but it seems justifiable, for the present purpose, to use the term ergonomics to signify an approach to information presentation based entirely on the limitations and advantages of the human operator. This article is based on a keynote address to the IEE Conference on 'Display' at Loughborough University, 7-10 September 1971.
