Epidemiology of migraine among students from randomly selected secondary schools in Lodz.

The purpose of the present study was to determine the prevalence of migraine among 2351 secondary school students aged 15 to 19 years. Six hundred fifty-nine students (120 males and 539 females) complained of migraine, including 148 with additional tension-type headache (mixed headache). Migraine with aura was diagnosed in 213 students (49 with mixed headache). The remaining 446 students (99 with mixed headache) had migraine without aura. In 83 students (16 with mixed headache), headaches were developing into migrainous states. In 237 students (56 with mixed headache), headaches were accompanied by dizziness. In 128 females (25 with mixed headache), interrelation between migraine and menstruation was found. Familial factors affecting the occurrence of migraine were noted in 536 students (127 with mixed headache). It was found that 28% of secondary school students aged 15 to 19 years suffer from migraine. Nine percent of them have migraine with aura and 19%, migraine without aura. The prevalence of migraine among secondary school students is about three times higher in females than in males. Migraine with tension-type headache differs from pure migraine in respect of more numerous attacks within 1 year among females, and of more frequent occurrence of migraine with sensory aura among males.

[Hemoglobin A1c level of erythrocytes in patients with lumbosciatic pain syndrome. Preliminary report].

The reported study was carried out in 26 patients hospitalized for protracted acute lumbosciatic pain syndrome lasting from 3 weeks to 3 months. In all patients the concentration of haemoglobin A1c was assessed in the erythrocytes by the colorimetric method of Thoma and Kutter. The control group comprised 14 healthy subjects in the same age group. The obtained results were subjected to statistical analysis which demonstrated an evident increase in the mean concentration of haemoglobin A1c in the erythrocytes in cases of lumbosciatic pain syndrome of protracted course.

[Evaluation of the vestibular system in patients with migraine].

Fifty women with migrainous headaches were studied. The state of the vestibular system was assessed by ENG, including recording of spontaneous nystagmus, positional, thermal and kinetic nystagmus, recording of following of pendulum movements with eyes, and optokinetic nystagmus. ENG investigations were done in all cases between migrainous attacks, and in 20 cases also during migraine attack. During the attack in 18 women changes in the time of visual stimuli predominated, between the attacks ENG changes were observed in 24 cases.

[Rapid intermittent eye movements in selected diseases of the nervous system].

The authors report the results of electronystagmographic investigations of the eyes in patients with damage to the motor nerves of the eyes, their neuromuscular junctions in cases of internuclear ophthalmoplegia, and lesions of the cerebellar and extrapyramidal systems. In all these cases pathological records of these movements were found which were fairly characteristic of a given type of damage.

[Effectiveness of ketotifen--a drug stabilizing mast cell membranes--in the treatment of chronic forms of Horton's headache].

The authors made an attempt at treating chronic cluster headache with ketotifen (Zaditen, Sandoz). The drug is the first known agent stabilizing the cell membrane of mast cells which may be taken orally. The treatment was administered to 15 patients giving the drug in doses of 1 mg thrice daily for 8 weeks. A very good therapeutic effect was achieved in 8 cases. Good effect was noticed in 5 cases. In 2 cases only slight improvement was obtained. Reduction in the number of headache attacks occured already in the first week of treatment and progressed gradually during 8 weeks of this treatment.

[Diagnostic possibilities of electronystagmography in motor nerve palsies of the eyeball].

The authors used a modification of ENG investigation which makes possible recording of the movements of each eyeball separately in two planes: horizontal and vertical. The authors used this method for analysis of cases with lesions of the motor nerves of to the eyeballs. The group included 20 patients with lesions of the motor nerves of the eyeballs of various origin. The control group included 20 healthy subjects. In nerve lesions a decrease of intensity of ENG tracings was observed when the rapid phase of nystagmus agreed with the direction of action of the eliminated motor nerves. Provocation of eyeballs to movements of lower amplitude but greater angular velocity (the test of induced nystagmus) increased changes. The change of deviation angle during investigation had also an effect on the appearance of pathological changes in the record. Changes were observed also in the motor activity of the unaffected eyeball.

[The picture of visual evoked potentials in Kimmerle anomaly].

Visual evoked potentials (VEP) were studied in 16 persons with radiological confirmed Kimmerle anomaly. Each eye was stimulated by the reversible checker-board pattern using the reversal and flash stimulation methods. Abnormal responses were noted in about 75% of the studied patients. Latency disturbances prevailed during reversal stimulation and abnormal configuration of responses predominated during flash stimulation.

Headaches in non insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.

The aim of the study was to assess the frequency and nature of headaches in patients with non-insulin dependent diabetes (NIDDM). The investigations included 154 patients with NIDDM, 90 females and 64 males aged between 30 to 65 years. Duration of diabetes varied from 6 months to 37 years. The control group comprised 106 persons. Of the 127 NIDDM patients complaining of headaches, 95 had migraine headaches and 32 tension-type headaches. In 50 patients the onset of migraine headaches occurred when the patients were afflicted with diabetes. In 45 patients migraine was diagnosed before they began to suffer from diabetes. In these patients the onset of diabetes significantly increased the average yearly number of headache days. In 21 patients tension-type headaches occurred in the course of diabetes. 11 patients had tension-type headaches before the onset of the disease. In these cases the onset of diabetes increased significantly the average yearly number of headache days. In the control group, migraine was diagnosed in 17 subjects and tension-type headaches in 28 subjects.
