Twelve cases of listeriosis are described. Nine patients had meningitis, two primary listerial bacteraemia and one had bacteraemia from a focus of infection in the genito-urinary tract. Clinical presentation and treatment are described.

The rationale for treating all fields every day with photons was reviewed. Since the effects of neutron radiation are much less dependent on alterations of fractionation schedules, and since preferential sparing for late effects is not obtained by fractionation of neutron dose, less convincing reasons exist for treating all fields every day with neutrons. Treating one field/day would not alter the physical dose distribution or overall treatment time, yet still maintain biological homogeneity. Preliminary in vitro experiments support this conclusion.

Of 83 patients with tubo-ovarian abscess studied retrospectively, 18 were treated within 24 hours of admission with total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingoo-ophorectomy. The other 65 patients were treated conservatively. In six patients, conservative therapy proved an immediate failure, and 14 patients had delayed failure. Thirty-nine patients were successfully treated conservatively, and six were lost to follow-up. We examined the length of hospital stay in the surgically treated group and the conservatively treated group. Immediate operation and delayed operation were examined in terms of mortality, morbidity, and hospital stay. Conservative therapy consisting of broad spectrum antibiotics combined with conservative operation when applicable is an effective method of treating unruptured tubo-ovarian abscess.

Mammalian cells cultured in vitro were used to study the radiobiological characteristics of neutron beams generated by 43 MeV protons on beryllium or 25 MeV deutrons on beryllium. For an unfiltered beam of neutrons generated by 43 MeV p+ leads to Be the relative biological effectiveness was found to be 8-12% higher at a depth of 2 cm than at a depth of 12 cm due to the presence of a large component of low-energy neutrons. The addition of a hydrogenous filter 4 cm thick preferentially removed the low-energy neutrons from the beam and, as a result, the neutron RBE was independent of depth. There was no significant difference in the oxygen enhancement ratio between the filtered neutrons produced by 43 Mev p+ leads to Be and neutrons produced by 25 MeV d+ leads to Be; for both beams the OER value was about 1.6.

Three young raccoons (Procyon lotor), two from Michigan and one from Arizona, died suddenly from acute infections. Intranuclear inclusion bodies and viral particles typical of herpesvirus were seen in liver cells from all three. Inclusions also were seen in the nuclei of endothelial cells in the lung, liver, glomeruli and reticuloendothelial cells of the spleen. The source of the infection was not determined, but possible transmission from other species could not be ruled out.
This report introduces a method for obtaining behavioral time-response information for a short-acting psychotropic drug (methylphenidate [Ritalin]) that is widely used to treat behaviorally hyperactive children. We used a laboratory learning task to document that between one and two hours after the administration of a single dose of methylphenidate, the drug exerts its maximum effect on performance in a learning task in the laboratory. This effect on cognitive performance dissipates within the same day. This rapid and transient effect of methylphenidate makes it possible to classify patients in a single day into those who respond favorably and those who respond adversely to the drug in terms of its effect on cognitive behavior.

Data from 132 primary open-angle glaucoma cases and from 6 combined open and closed-angle cases, taken from a group of 254 cases with extensively documented material from 10 year or longer follow-up, are used to show that tonographic data are more helpful than other criteria in predicting which cases can be expected to show deterioration, although careful visual field testing and optic disc evaluation remain the ultimate guides.
