Interviewing adolescents by telephone: is it a useful methodological strategy?

Using a structured psychiatric interview, we interviewed 25 youths by telephone and compared information obtained from that group with information from a similar group of 25 youths who were interviewed in-person. There were no remarkable differences between the two groups. This suggests that in studies in which children are directly interviewed, the use of the telephone interview may prevent valuable information from being lost.

The effects of psychiatric and psychosocial interviews on children.

To test child and parent reactions to direct interviewing, a survey was administered to parents and children who had been directly interviewed as part of two family alcoholism studies. Subjects had been asked about possible psychopathology in the children and about psychosocial stressors that the children may have experienced. For this study, parents and children were asked if the children had been upset by the experience or affected in any negative way. The results show a positive response from both parents and children to all aspects of the interview. There were no serious negative effects. Many parents and children enjoyed the interview, and none of the families indicated that they would not continue to participate in the study because of the questions asked of the children.

Computerized interviews as a method of assessing psychopathology in children.

A computerized version of the Diagnostic Interview for Children and Adolescents-Revised (DICA-R) has been developed. There are three versions of the interview, one for children aged 6 to 12, one for adolescents aged 13 to 18, and one for parents of children aged 6 to 18. Acceptability and reliability studies of the child and adolescent versions were performed on 93 subjects. The results show that children of all ages enjoyed the computer, and most were able to complete the interview with very little help. Reasonable reliability was found for both age groups despite difficulty with certain diagnostic criteria.
