Milk protein concentrations were determined either by double antibody radioimmunoassay (IgA and IgG) or single radial immunodiffusion (lactoferrin) in the mammary secretions of seven healthy non-lactating subjects and eight patients with breast disease. IgA and IgG were detected in all samples of breast secretion (whether from normal or diseased breasts) and the concentrations observed were very similar to those in post-partum colostrum and milk. However, because the volume of secretion obtained was very small compared with colostrum and milk, total IgA synthesis by the non-lactating breast is very much less than in the lactating breast. The IgA detected in the mammary secretions was demonstrated to be secretory IgA by gel filtration and it is therefore suggested that the secretory immune system is functional in the non-lactating breast.

Twenty-eight problem drinkers participated in behavioral training groups designed to teach moderate drinking. Both at termination and at follow-up, 70% were considered successful, showing significant reduction in alcohol consumption and in weekly peak blood alcohol concentration. Indices of severity of problem drinking were found to best predict outcome. Results are consistent with previous data regarding behavioral self-control training as a therapeutic intervention for early stage problem drinkers.
Thirty-one self-referred problem drinkers were randomly assigned to one of two modalities for behavioral self-control training with a goal of moderation: (1) minimal therapist contact, in which clients worked only with a self-help manual; and (2) therapist directed training, in which clients received self-help materials plus 10 individual treatment sessions. Both groups showed significant reductions in alcohol consumption and peak blood alcohol concentration. Contrary to expectations, there were no significant differences on outcome measures between groups. Results are interpreted within a self-control framework.

A rat mammary carcinoma induced by 7-12 dimethylbenzanthracene was serially transplanted into successive generations of thymectomized host animals. After its 2nd passage, the growth of the tumour appeared hormone-dependent, regressing after oophorectomy and regrowing with administration of oestradiol 17 beta to the host. Third-generation transplanted tumours, however, showed only a transient regression after oophorectomy, and the growth of tumours after further passages appeared ovary-independent. Loss in hormone dependency was not accompanied by histological changes. There was however a progressive increase with successive transplantation in the ability of tumours to metabolize 7 alpha [3H] testosterone in vitro. This was accounted for by raised conversion to 5 alpha androstanediol.

On the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale and the Halstead--Reitan neuropsychological test battery, alcoholics were more impaired than patients with functional diagnoses and resembled patients with organic brain damage.

The Sex Knowledge and Attitude Test (SKAT) was designed to measure knowledge, attitudes and degree of experience in a variety of sexual behaviors, and to be used as a teaching and research instrument. The SKAT has been administered to over 35,000 students, approximately two-thirds of whom have been medical students. SKAT has served two major objectives: to measure changes in knowledge and attitudes after a course or program in human sexuality and to demonstrate the deficiencies of medical and nursing education in preparing health professionals to aid patients with sexual problems. Additional types of research using the SKAT are suggested.
