Density matrix renormalization group approach for many-body open quantum systems.

The density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) approach is extended to complex-symmetric density matrices characteristic of many-body open quantum systems. Within the continuum shell model, we investigate the interplay between many-body configuration interaction and coupling to open channels in case of the unbound nucleus (7)He. It is shown that the extended DMRG procedure provides a highly accurate treatment of the coupling to the nonresonant scattering continuum.

Shape coexistence and triaxiality in the superheavy nuclei.

Superheavy nuclei represent the limit of nuclear mass and charge; they inhabit the remote corner of the nuclear landscape, whose extent is unknown. The discovery of new elements with atomic numbers Z > or = 110 has brought much excitement to the atomic and nuclear physics communities. The existence of such heavy nuclei hangs on a subtle balance between the attractive nuclear force and the disruptive Coulomb repulsion between protons that favours fission. Here we model the interplay between these forces using self-consistent energy density functional theory; our approach accounts for spontaneous breaking of spherical symmetry through the nuclear Jahn-Teller effect. We predict that the long-lived superheavy elements can exist in a variety of shapes, including spherical, axial and triaxial configurations. In some cases, we anticipate the existence of metastable states and shape isomers that can affect decay properties and hence nuclear half-lives.

Gamow shell model description of neutron-rich nuclei.

This work presents the first continuum shell-model study of weakly bound neutron-rich nuclei involving multiconfiguration mixing. For the single-particle basis, the complex-energy Berggren ensemble representing the bound single-particle states, narrow resonances, and the nonresonant continuum background is taken. Our shell-model Hamiltonian consists of a one-body finite potential and a zero-range residual two-body interaction. It is demonstrated that the residual interaction coupling to the particle continuum is important; in some cases, it can give rise to the binding of a nucleus.

Quadrupole moments of highly deformed structures in the A approximately 135 region: probing the single-particle motion in a rotating potential.

The latest generation gamma-ray detection system, GAMMASPHERE, coupled with the Microball charged-particle detector, has made possible a new class of nuclear lifetime measurement. For the first time differential lifetime measurements free from common systematic errors for over 15 different nuclei ( >30 rotational bands in various isotopes of Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, and Sm) have been extracted at high spin within a single experiment. This comprehensive study establishes the effective single-particle transition quadrupole moments in the A approximately 135 light rare-earth region. Detailed comparisons are made with theoretical calculations using the self-consistent cranked mean-field theory which convincingly demonstrates the validity of the additivity of single-particle quadrupole moments in this mass region.

Nuclear quadrupole moment of 57Fe from microscopic nuclear and atomic calculations.

The nuclear quadrupole moment (NQM) of the Ipi = 3/2(-) excited nuclear state of 57Fe at 14.41 keV, important in Mössbauer spectroscopy, is determined from the large-scale nuclear shell-model calculations for 54Fe, 57Fe, and also from the electronic ab initio and density functional theory calculations including solid state and electron correlation effects for the molecules Fe(CO)(5) and Fe(C5H5)(2). Both independent methods yield very similar results. The recommended value is 0.15(2) e b. The NQM of the isomeric 10+ in 54Fe has also been calculated. The new NQM values for 54Fe and 57Fe are consistent with the perturbed angular distribution data.

Fine structure in the decay of deformed proton emitters: nonadiabatic approach

The coupled-channel Schrodinger equation with outgoing wave boundary conditions is employed to study the fine structure seen in the proton decay of deformed even- N, odd- Z rare earth nuclei 131Eu and 141Ho. Experimental lifetimes and proton-decay branching ratios are reproduced. Variations with the standard adiabatic theory are discussed.
