Intraocular lens power check.
We have developed a simple procedure that uses a standard keratometer to determine the power of an intraocular lens that is still in its sterile package. The procedure is accurate to within +/-0.5 diopter and may be used in conjunction with any intraocular lens packaging system in which the convex side of a plano-convex intraocular lens is clearly visible through a clear, flat surface.

Increase in rabbit corneal curvature by heated ring application.
This study demonstrated that increases of corneal curvature in living rabbits could be induced through the application of heated brass rings. The peak increase averaged 10.5 D in a series of 19 eyes, as compared to the nontreated fellow eyes. This change tended to be transient, was not prolonged with the use of steroids locally, and tended to return to normal within two to three weeks. The mechanism of this change involved the creation of a rigid desiccated pseudo-limbus holding the cornea in the configuration of increased curvature. With the rehydration of the desiccated area, the cornea then reassumes its pretreated curvature and configuration. The application of the rings heated to about 98C produced a very low incidence of corneal ulceration. Further experiments showed that burn ulceration is a temperature-dependent phenomenon rarely found with application of heat less than 110C.

Ophthalmometry without patient fixation.
Because of the asphericity of the cornea, proper ophthalmometry requires the visual axis of the eye, the optical axis of the ophthalmometer, and the corneal apex to be coincident. The animal subject and the human patient cannot always direct their visual axis to the axis of the instrument. This paper describes the attachment of a photographer's tripod pan arm to the Haag Streit ophthalmometer and the method devised, which allows accurate corneal curvature measurement in cases of nonfixating subjects.

Increasing the range of the keratometer.
How can the ophthalmologist perform keratometry on a patient whose corneal curvature exceeds the limits of the keratometer? A technique for extending the range of the keratometer to test such patients, e.g., those suffering from keratoconus or corneal plana, is presented.

Married mothers' perceptions of their premature or term infants and the quality of their relationships with their husbands.
Twenty-eight mothers of premature infants and 37 mothers of term infants were examined for their perceptions of their infants and of their relationships with their husbands at two to four postpartum days and at six to eight postpartum weeks. The mothers tended to perceive their infants positively, whether or not the infants were born prematurely. Preterm mothers who compared their infants to an average premature infant were more positive than term mothers who compared their infants to an average term infant. An association was not found in either group between mothers' perceptions of their infants and of the quality of their relationships with their husbands. However, mothers with negative perceptions of their infants also tended to have difficult marriages.
