[HELLP syndrome in postpartum].

A case is presented of HELLP syndrome which developed several hours after normal labour. The increasing disorders in the blood clotting system (DIC) were the cause of a massive intracerebral haemorrhage and death of the patient.

[Diagnostic and therapeutic difficulties in staphylococcal sepsis].

A case is described of a 38-year-old man treated for three years for diabetes mellitus admitted to an internal department for elucidation of the cause of protracted fever. Staphylococcal sepsis was diagnosed with pneumonia and retroperitoneal abscess. Surgical treatment was given and targeted antibiotic-therapy was administered. The patient was discharged from the hospital after 38 days as cured. An observation of 18 months failed to show the recurrence of the infection.

[Chronic twin to twin transfusion syndrome with non-immunologic hydrops fetalis "donor"].

We describe a case of twin to twin transfusion syndrome, with few distinct features that are not commonly reported. Not immunological hydrops fetalis (NIHF) was met in donor and there was no hydramnion around the recipient. In prenatal diagnosis we additionally used the ultrasound testing of the dividing membranes and the Doppler velocimetry in umbilical arteries.

The effect of short term feeding of the antioxidant triethyleneglycol-bis-3(3-tert-butyl-4-hydroxy-5-methyl)propionate on serum thyrotropin and thyroid hormones in the male rat.

Male rats were fed triethyleneglycol-bis-3(3-tert-butyl-4-hydroxy-5-methyl)propionate (TK 12627) admixed with the food at a concentration of 1000 ppm for 3, 6, 13, and 20 days. Treatment resulted in time-dependent and marked increases in serum levels of thyrotropin (TSH) and reverse triiodothyronine (rT3). Serum levels of thyroxine (T4) were slightly and transiently decreased, whereas triiodothyronine (T3) levels decreased by 35-50% at all time periods. Treatment with 50, 150, 500, and 1000 ppm for 2 weeks resulted in dose-related increases in thyroid and liver weights, follicular hypertrophy of the thyroid, morphological changes of the pituitaries, liver hypertrophy, and similar changes in the serum parameters described above. At 50 ppm, no alterations in the weights and morphology of the liver, thyroid, or pituitary nor in the serum levels of TSH or T4 were observed. The effects of TK 12627 observed at a dose of 1000 ppm for 2 weeks were reversible after cessation of treatment. Decreases in T3, increases in rT3, and no change in T4 serum levels were also obtained when thyroidectomized T4-substituted rats were treated with 1000 ppm TK 12627 for 28 days, indicating that the effects of TK 12627 are probably due to inhibition of the 5' monodeiodination of T4 to T3 and rT3 to diiodothyronine with compensatory increases in thyroid hormone conjugation at extrathyroidal sites.

[Effect of work performed by pregnant women on birth weight and fetal hypotrophy].

The studies have been aimed at evaluation of the effects of occupational and non-occupational work on foetal maturity and foetal intrauterine hypotrophy. The studies involved 17,134 women who gave birth to 17,324 newborns. The parturients have been divided into 5 groups: I--mental workers, II--physical workers, III--housewives, IV--farmers, V--peasant working also as labourers. The highest percentage of low birth weight newborns was found in peasant-labourers--16.96, housewives--12.42, and physical workers--11.77.

Chemotactic activity of polymorphonuclear leukocytes to Streptococcus pyogenes.

Influence of two different streptococcal group A type 12 strains on chemotactic activity of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) was investigated in vitro and in vivo. The strains differed only in presence of M protein. In both conditions, the inhibition of the chemotaxis of the PMN after their treatment with M positive strains was observed. These results suggest that M protein of streptococci inhibits chemotaxis of PMN and therefore they can weaken defensive mechanisms of infected organism.
