The inhibitory role of nitric oxide (NO) in the somatocardiac sympathetic C-reflex in anesthetized rats.

The role of nitric oxide (NO) in the two somatosympathetic reflex arcs, i.e. A- and C-reflexes, was examined using NO synthase (NOS) inhibitor in anesthetized rats. The A- and C-reflex components were recorded from a cardiac sympathetic efferent nerve and elicited by stimulation of myelinated A and unmyelinated C afferent fibers in the left tibial nerve. NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME), a NOS inhibitor, when administered by either intrathecal (i.t.) or into the cisterna magna (i.c.m.) routes, augmented only the C-reflex in a dose-dependent manner. The effective i.t. dose of L-NAME to augment the C-reflex was approximately 1000 times the i.c.m. dose. NG-nitro-D-arginine methyl ester (D-NAME), an isomer of L-NAME, had no effect on either A- or C-reflexes, when administered i.c.m. Neither i.c.m. pre-treatment nor post-treatment with L-arginine, a NOS substrate, influenced either A- or C-reflexes, but i.c.m. pre-treatment with L-arginine abolished the facilitatory effect of L-NAME on the C-reflex. These results suggest that NO, synthesized in the brain stem, plays an inhibitory role in the central modulation of the somatocardiac sympathetic C-reflex. The possibility of movement of L-NAME to the brain stem from the spinal cord is discussed.

[Effects of composite xueliting on four gastric ulcer models in rats and mice].

Composite Xueliting (CXLT) was found to be an effective anti-ulcer agent in four experimental models in rats and mice, namely, the stress restraint-induced, histamin-induced, salicylic acid-induced and reserpine-induced ulcers. In above-mentioned models, CXLT (0.214-0.856 g/kg, 1/d x 5, per os) could inhibit gastric ulcer by 40%-63%, 48%-85%, 68%-87% and 27%-65% respectively. Among these, the salicylic acid-induced ulcer was more markedly inhibited. The result suggested that CXLT had the protective function against the gastric ulcer.

[Fetal umbilical artery velocity waveforms to predict the outcome in high risk pregnancy and its correlation with placental pathology].

Pulsed-wave Doppler ultrasound was used to measure the umbilical artery flow velocity S/D ratio in 101 high risk pregnancies. S/D ratio represented the ratio of maximum systolic velocity (S) to minimum diastolic velocity (D), The result of performing the receiver operating curve demonstrated that the cut off point of 2.8 had the best predictive value with sensitivity 0.706, specificity 0.976, accuracy 0.92 and false positive value 0.024. The abnormal pregnancy outcomes of S/D > 2.8 were obviously higher than of S/D < 2.8 (P < 0.01). In order to investigate the correlation of S/D ratio and placental pathology, 29 pregnant women were divided into 3 groups: (1) 10 normal pregnancies with S/D < 2.8; (2) 9 high risk pregnancies with S/D < 2.8; (3) 10 high risk pregnancies with S/D > 2.8. The result of placental pathological examination showed that the mean number of small muscular arteries of the tertiary stem villi per 100 microscope low power field (LPF) was less in the high risk pregnancy with S/D > 2.8 group (2.15 +/- 0.16 than in the other two groups (4.84 +/- 1.6, 4.17 +/- 1.4, respectively) (P < 0.01). Our study suggested that the umbilical artery Doppler was a useful screening tool for identifying the abnormal outcomes in high risk pregnancies and its main placental pathological finding was the obliteration of small muscular arteries in the tertiary stem villi.

[The role of substance P and somatostatin in acupuncture and moxibustion-induced postsynaptic inhibition].

AIM OF INVESTIGATION: Our previous work indicated that acupuncture and moxibustion (heating acupoints with a special lamp) could produce inhibitory effects on the tail flick reflex and the nociceptive response of dorsal horn neurons. In the present study the role of somatostatin (SS) and substance P (SP) in acupuncture and moxibustion-induced postsynaptic inhibition was further investigated. METHODS: The experiments were performed on male adult Wistar rats. The antidromic action potential (AAP) induced by cervical cord stimulation was extracellulary recorded at lumbar cord (L3-4). The latency of AAP was used to represent the excitability of postsynaptic projecting neurons. The effects of acupuncture (0.5 ms, 3.3 Hz, 2 mA) for five minutes or moxibustion (the temperature up to 45-46 degrees C) for six minutes at Huantiao points on the latency of AAP were observed. And then the effects of topical administration of SS or SP antiserum on either acupuncture or moxibustion-induced postsynaptic inhibition were observed. RESULTS: The latency of AAP was markedly prolonged by acupuncture and moxibustion. The maximal prolongation was 0.196 +/- 0.071 ms (n = 12, P < 0.02) and 0.176 +/- 0.062 ms (n = 11, P < 0.02) respectively. After topical administration of SS antiserum (1:40, 10 microliters), the latency of AAP was slightly prolonged by either acupuncture or moxibustion. The maximal prolongation (0.041 +/- 0.029 ms and 0.016 +/- 0.020 ms) was significantly reduced by SS antiserum (P < 0.05). While pretreated with SP antiserum, the latency was still prolonged by moxibustion (0.142 +/- 0.067 ms), but not by acupuncture (-0.003 +/- 0.046 ms). CONCLUSION: It is referred that postsynaptic inhibition may be involved in both acupuncture analgesia and moxibustion analgesia. The former is predominately mediated by SP and partially by SS, while the latter mainly by SS but not by SP.

A new strategy of iontophoresis for hyperhidrosis.

We used a modified iontophoretic method with an anticholinergic agent and aluminum chloride to treat hyperhidrosis. The strategy behind this combination was to shift gradually from inhibition of sweat gland secretion to blockage of the sweat duct. In a double-blind study in which we compared our method with tap water iontophoresis, the results were comparable. A second study revealed an 87% response rate, with an average remission period of 32 days. Our data indicate that patients who were older at onset, had a family history negative for the disorder, had an early response, or underwent treatment in cool weather had the most favorable results.

Keratitis, ichthyosis, and deafness (KID) syndrome with cerebellar hypoplasia.

A 6-year-old boy with features of the keratitis-ichthyosis-deafness (KID) syndrome and cerebellar hypoplasia is the second case in which abnormality of cerebellum was detected by computed tomography, but is the first report of KID syndrome with cerebellar hypoplasia. This finding, together with neurosensory deafness and other neuromuscular defects, may suggest that there is an underlying inborn error of nervous system in the KID syndrome. In vitro immunologic studies in this patient also showed a possible deficit in cellular immunity.

Clinical and electrophysiological studies in a patient with keratitis, ichthyosis and deafness (KID) syndrome.

Neurological studies were performed in a young boy with keratitis, ichthyosis and deafness syndrome. Skin biopsy showed features of ichthyosis. Clinically and electrophysiologically, he had normal motor and sensory systems, but there was an acoustic nerve lesion and absence of tendon reflexes. Audiometry and brainstem auditory evoked potentials showed bilateral neurosensory deafness. Poor vision may not be due to an optic nerve lesion as evidenced on visual evoked potential findings, but is probably due to pronounced vascularizing keratitis of the cornea. Computer tomography scan showed mild hypoplasia of the inferior vermis and left side of the cerebellum.

[Epidemiologic investigation of carcinoma of the esophagus and gastric cardia carcinoma in Nanao County, Guangdong province].

Nanao county, Guangdong province is a high incidence area of carcinoma of esophagus and gastric cardia carcinoma. By retrospective investigation of data in the past 14 years (1970 to 1983), the annual average crude mortality of carcinoma of esophagus and gastric cardia carcinoma was found to be 88.65/100,000, the age adjusted mortality of Chinese population was 82.91/100,000 and that of the world population was 113.09/100,000. The mortality of the male was 100.65/100,000 and of the female was 67.24/100,000 with the ratio of 1.38:1. As regards the relationship between the age and mortality, the highest rate occurs from 50 to 74. A higher mortality was also observed in the population engaged in salt production and fishing. The mortality was higher in the lower elevation areas than in the elevated regions.
