The studies were carried out on thirty-one sportsmen, cyclists aged 21-28 years, after the termination of a training course just before the start of their season. They exercised on a bicycle ergometer according to the following schedule: 30 N at 60 rev/min for 6 min, 40 N at 70 rev/min for 5 min, 50 N at 80 rev/min for 5 min and 50 N at 90 rev/min until exhaustion. According to the level of training the subjects were divided into three groups. In the three groups of cyclists were determined the concentrations of total plasma peptides and their individual fractions obtained by gel-filtration on Sephadex G-10. It was found that the total plasma peptide concentration varied with the level of fitness. The lowest plasma peptide concentration was observed in cyclists with the lowest level of fitness and it differed from those observed in cyclists with intermediary and high levels of fitness. After exercise the biggest increase in plasma peptide concentration was found in the cyclists with the low level of fitness, and the lowest one in those with the high level of fitness. Individual plasma peptide fractions also revealed differences before and after exercise depending on the level of fitness.

Concentrations of peptidic compounds in blood plasma of uremics are increased. Evidence for participation of intestinal bacteria in the production of such peptides (presumably toxic) was obtained by isolation of a strongly basic peptide containing covalently bound spermidine from peritoneal dialysate of patients with chronic uremia. The same peptide was found in blood plasma of patients with end-stage chronic renal failure. The absence of glutamic acid in the spermidinepeptide molecule suggests that an enzyme different from the transglutaminase of mammalian cells must take part in the synthesis of spermidinepeptide. This conjugate forms a relatively stable complex with insulin, thus altering the action of the hormone on adipose cell metabolism. Also, interaction of spermidinepeptide with insulin and lipoproteins may contribute to hypertriglyceridemia and accelerated atherosclerosis in patients with chronic uremia.

In a 55 years old male patient bronchoscopy was carried out because of suspected bronchial carcinoma. Chest X-ray showed a lesion in the periphery of left lung, an episode of hemoptysis was reported 4 weeks prior to the examination. During bronchoscopy we found numerous small tumours on the mucosa of distal trachea and left main bronchus. The findings suggested a widespread malignant process, whereas histological examination of biopsies showed tracheobronchopathia osteochondroplastica. In the case described we could not find amyloidosis of tracheal wall or disorders in somatotropine secretion. Pathogenesis and clinical features of the disease, which is in a high percentage detected by chance or post mortem, are discussed.
