EEG and slow brain potentials during anticipation and control of painful stimulation.

Cerebral responses in anticipation of painful stimulation and while coping with it were investigated in a "fakir" and 12 male volunteers. Experiment 1 consisted of 3 periods of 40 trials each. During period 1, subjects heart one of two acoustic warning stimuli of 6 sec duration signalling that either an aversive noise or a neutral tone would be presented at S1 offset. During period 2, subjects were asked to use any technique for coping with pain that they had ever found to be successful. During period 3, the neutral S2 was presented simultaneously with a weak electric shock and the aversive noise was presented simultaneously with a strong, painful shock, again under pain copying instructions. EEG activity within the theta band increased in anticipation of aversive events. Theta peak was most prominent in the fakir's EEG. A negative slow potential shift during the S1-82 interval was generally more pronounced in anticipation of the aversive events that the neutral ones, even though no overt motor response was required. Negativity tended to increase across the three periods, opposite to the usually observed diminution. In Experiment 2, all subjects self-administered 21 strong shock-noise presentations. The fakir again showed more theta power and more pronounced EEG negativity after stimulus delivery compared with control subjects. Contrary to the controls, self-administration of shocks evoked a larger skin conductance response in the fakir than warned external application.

[Psychosomatic symptoms and functional disorders in migrant workers--Japanese and Greeks in Germany and Germans abroad].

An epidemiologic pilot-study of Greek, Japanese and German workers in foreign countries investigates genesis, frequency and characteristic symptomatology of psychosomatic and functional disorders. Social change as pathogenic stressor as well as psychopathologic consequences on behavior were demonstrated in the context of the life-change-unit research. The increase of psychosomatic disorders corresponds with intense homesickness reactions which can change in hypochondriacal depression. Psychopathology of intense homesickness, prejudices and other factors which prevent from adequate integration in a new environmental setting were delineated as well as prophylactic-psychosocial and therapeutic procedures.

[Psychophysiologic processes in pyrovasy (fire walking) (author's transl)].

1. Using the model of pyrovasy (fire walking) we investigated human psychophysiologic processes, possible 'paranormal' human efficiency, and the scientific principles connected with the latter. The introduction is a field study description of the historical background and the cultic character of pyrovasy as a religious rite of invulnerability. 2. The psychophysical process during the ceremony of fire walking was investigated neurologically and psychiatrically with polygraphic recordings from four Greek fire walkers in a Greek village. 3. We did not find any pathognostically relevant results. The conditions of pyrovasy were also simulated in a thermophysical laboratory experiment. All results of the investigation support the hypothesis that fire walking lies within the scope of human efficiency. 4. The hypalgesia experienced during pyrovasy has, among other things, a psychologic component with specific effects on the physical regulation of temperature, and is also partly due to a special technique of walking.

[Psychophysiologic approaches in the etiology and therapy of psychosomatic disorders].

Psychosomatic phenomena were considered within the framework of psychophysiology and general stress research. Startingpoint for an adequate understanding and interpretation of etiology and symptom-specifity of psychosomatic diseases are neurophysiologic-endocrinologic and psychodynamic findings. The familiarity with the concept of the specifity-of-attitude-hypotheses is important, too. Concerning the described etiologic hypotheses three psychotherapeutic procedures are demonstrated: 1) Relaxation trainings combined with biofeedback techniques, 2) rational-emotive therapy, 3) social-skill training. Furthermore it is referred to the clinical importance of slow cortical potentials (contingent negative variation--CNV) as central nervous correlates of information processes in the treatment of anxiety and hyperactivation of the autonomous system in stress situations. Prognostic criteria and indication for different treatment procedures of psychosomatic disorders were discussed.

[Psycho-oncologic interventions--critical review].

Following information on diagnosis, therapy and prognosis, supportive psycho-oncological interventions may be performed. General targets of psychological intervention are to help coping with disease problems and family-related problems and to reduce symptoms related to disease and therapy such as pain, anticipatory nausea and vomiting, stress, anxiety, depression and feeling of helplessness. A number of different kinds of controlled interventions may contribute significantly to both psychological and physical health outcomes in cancer patients. This review confirms the efficacy of education, individual psychotherapy, group interventions and behavioural training in reducing disease- related and therapy-related symptoms, depression and anxiety, thus improving psychological functioning and the quality of life. The multidimensional evaluation of psychooncological interventions including immunological parameters, the question of differential indication of psychological interventions in cancer patients' and the influence of psychological predictors on the course of different cancer diseases and survival rates are significant aspects that merit further research.
